NOSTALGIA! This is a great book with both Warren Miller and Ray Atkeson at their best. It was especially interesting for me as the era of the book was just prior to my adventure into the wonderful sport of skiing. When I started gas had increased to .33 per gallon, and lift tickets were $4.00 at Timberline where I learned to ski with my good friend Don Beck..on the rope tow. Ironically in those early years I too worked at Montgomery Ward(Portland) and than became an ardent Sun Valley skier, and eventually migrating to Deer Valley(Park City) Utah. So you can see why this book is so dear to my heart it brings back a lot of memories when the sport was slower, when it still was an adventure, and friendships were deeper and yet due to the ski technology of today(skis, boots, grooming etc.) it still has me on the hill at 81! GLL.

Great, old-school photos and text. When men were men, women were women, and hills needed to be climbed before being skied. A great book

Ray Atkeson was the premier skiing photographer in the 30's - 50's. Through his beautiful photographs you'll enjoy seeing the early days of skiing in the Pacific Northwest, Utah, Colorado and California. It's remarkable not only for the photographs, but for the camera equipment Ray had to use to capture these scenes. See the ski areas, equipment and clothing from this early area. This is a terrific coffee table pictorial of a bygone skiing days.

First saw this book in the Denver, CO airport. What a great book. If you like skiing you will enjoy the photos in this book - particularly if you frequent any of the resorts featured in the photos (most of which are in the western US - WA, CO, UT, CA). Like most any ski related item associated with Warren Miller - awesome!

This is a super book with loads of great stories and wonderful photographs! A must own for any skiier.

Henry Watson Fowler initially aimed his Dictionary of Modern English Usage, as he wrote to his publishers in 1911, at "the half-educated Englishman of literary proclivities who wants to know Can I say so-&-so?" He was of course obsessed with, in Swift's phrase, "proper words in their proper places." But having been a schoolmaster, Fowler knew that liberal doses of style, wit, and caprice would keep his manual off the shelf and in writers' hands. He also felt that description must accompany prescription, and that advocating pedantic "superstitions" and "fetishes" would be to no one's advantage. Adepts will have their favorite inconsequential entries--from burgle to brood, truffle to turgid. Would that we could quote them all, but we can't resist a couple. Here Fowler lays into dedicated: He is that rara avis a dedicated boxer. The sporting correspondent who wrote this evidently does not see why the literary critics should have a monopoly of this favourite word of theirs, though he does not seem to think that it will be greatly needed in his branch of the business. Needless to say, later on rara avis is also smacked upside the head! And practically fares no better: "It is unfortunate that practically should have escaped from its true meaning into something like its opposite," Fowler begins. But our linguistic hero also knew full well when to put a crimp on comedy. Some phrases and proper uses, it's clear, would always be worth fighting for, and the guide thus ranges from brief definitions to involved articles. Archaisms, for instance, he considered safe only in the hands of the experienced, and meaningless words, especially those used by the young, "are perhaps more suitable for the psychologist than for the philologist." Well, youth might respond, "Whatever!"--though only after examining the keen differences between that phrase and what ever. (One can only imagine what Fowler would have made of our late-20th-century abuses of like.) This is where Robert Burchfield's 1996 third edition comes in. Yes, Fowler lost the fight for one r in guerrilla and didn't fare too well when it came to quashing such vogue words as smear and seminal. But he knew--and makes us ever aware--that language is a living, breathing (and occasionally suffocating) thing, and we hope that he would have welcomed any and all revisions. Fowlerphiles will want to keep their first (if they're very lucky) or second editions at hand, but should look to Burchfield for new entries on such phrases as gay, iron curtain, and inchoate--not to mention girl. --Kerry Fried

This book is very resourceful for both writers and students or anyone who would like to know more about proper usage of English Language. The paperback edition is published on 2009 by Oxford University Press’s Oxford World Classics Series. The main part of this book is the original edition of A Dictionary of Modern English Usage by Fowlers. I have read from a previous comment stating that the last page of the dictionary is missing, however, when I opened my book delivered to me just now, I found that the last page is completely printed in the book(on page 742).There are just some very tiny printing errors of head letters in the last part of List of Articles and List of Abbreviations, starting from -ved to Wh- and from a.(adjective) to ind.obj.(indirect object), for example, the hyphen - in -ved is missing and a in a.(adjective) is missing, but these tiny missed letters will not affect your usage of the dictionary, because these missing head letters could be very easily guessed and there are just a few of these missing head letters. I have not yet read the whole book, as far as I could see, the rest of the book, except a few missing head letters in front of the main part of the Dictionary, is perfectly printed.If you are curious about English Usage in the contemporary period of Henry Watson Fowler’s and how the English Usage has changed over time, you should buy this book.

The second edition is the best edition of this must have reference books on English Usage. Later and earlier editions are either anachronistic or fraught with problems. The second edition is perfect.

Here's the deal with Fowler's.1926: First irascible version of Fowler's "Dictionary of Modern English Usage" published. Owing to the author's idiosyncrasies and clear-headed prescriptions, it earns a place on every writer's shelf.1965: An new edition comes out, edited by Sir Ernest Gowers. Most people believe Gowers only brought the language up-to-date where absolutely necessary, keeping the spirit of the original intact. In other words, this revision was hailed as welcome and necessary.1996: Massive overhaul of the text published, edited by the famous Robert W. Burchfield. Burchfield thoroughly changes the language and even the spirit of Fowler's original, resulting in a book that is much more observational than prescriptional. Much of what made the original beloved was excised.2009: David Crystal digs up the 1926 edition, reprints it, and writes a big honkin' essay at the end, (almost needlessly) justifying the resuscitation of the original.Thus what we have is generally thought to be superior to the 1996 edition, but I think most writers and editors would have been happy to do without Crystal's contributions and simply had Oxford University Press flood the world with a bunch of reprints of the 1965 edition, which, since that's the one everybody seems to want, is becoming danged hard to find.

An absolutely unreadable kindle edition. Format (spacing between lines, font size, width of column, italics, text appearing as an exponent would (moved halfway up, or sometimes down, the horizontal line), strange characters such as british pound sign, etc.) varies maybe 20 times on a given screen. Also, the word "aetat" appears repeatedly in front of numbers. Here's Example 1.verb-construe A!N$nene 14 ALBINO tion (at with the gerund not being the-way word is dear for its own even mentioned) after aim. sake, or rather is welcome as giving aine.Sorry, in the Amazon comment box I couldn't reproduce the two words, at and aim, that are in italics, or the word aine that was half a line under the rest and in smaller font. Also, the $ was a British pound sign but I can't reproduce that either, so I picked the $ sign. Here's example 2:The normal use, & sense,.ALMIGHTY 16 ALONEhowever, are same as those of tion. Allude to has the same admit of. limitationsExamples of the legitialmighty.So spelt; see -u>, -L,4.mate use are:--We looked at each all right.The words should always other wondering which of MS he was be written separate ; there are no alluding to ;Sorry, I couldn't reproduce the italics in 17 of these words or the 12 words in smaller fonts and below the line of the other words. Maybe some italics are good, such as for Allude to and admit of, but there is so much inconsistency you go crazy trying to figure out what is going on. And here's another example: Jvortin is tvillingNot convinced yet? Then how about another example: procity Bill was passed; but by perfectly & then written them with pressing it through Congress Presithe FORMAL WORD anticipate ; ANA dent Taft antagonized both the StandLOGY has duped them into supposing pattersAgain, I couldn't replicate the italics and 5 words below the line or 6 words above the line.I double checked my typing. So sorry whoever put Fowler's into Kindle didn't check out what they thought they had done.

Not the book, but, as usual, a corrupt Kindle facsimile. How can we make Amazon accountable for this garbage?

I was delighted to find a reprint of the first edition of this book published with interesting commentary by David Crystal. My chief complaint about the book is the production value of the e-copy. I've only looked at a few pages and I'm already noticing OCR errors, e.g., "denning" instead of "defining," and words that are stuck together with no space between them, e.g., "to shrink with horror from endingwith a prepositionis no more than foolish superstition." These errors not only make the book harder to read, they impair the "find" function, which is one of the chief advantages of this format for a reference book.At this price, from this publisher, I expected better.

There is literally an OCR error in the first sentence of the Kindle version of this book. That's a serious error for any title, but for this book in particular it's egregious.

I bought this based on the positive reviews and I don’t understand what people are talking about. This coloring book is sub par and looks bootleg to me. It looks like the pages were printed on someone’s home printer and the images are inconsistent in line thickness and ink saturation. Would feel bad to give this as a Christmas gift so I’m returning. Do yourself a favor and just go to Michaels to pick up an authentic quality version that won’t make you look like a cheap ass.

This is a horrible book and 85% of pics are on pint rest.I swear out of the close to 20 something coloring books I've purchased from Amazon, this is the worst one. Looks like it was made in this person's basement and you would think they would atleast get pics that are not on pintrest. Or better yet STOP SCAMMING PEOPLE

Husband loved it as a Christmas gift! Some of the pictures are harder to color because you are not sure of what exactly is in the background. Overall would buy again!

“Batman: Haunted Knight” collects Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale’s Halloween Specials from “Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight”. DC launched “Legends of the Dark Knight” as an anthology series with stories set earlier in Batman’s career and in the style of Frank Miller’s “Batman: Year One”. These three stories each fit that pattern, with “Fears” focusing on a battle between Batman and the Scarecrow, “Madness” focusing on Batman’s fight with the Mad Hatter who has kidnapped Captain Jim Gordon’s adopted daughter Barbara, and “Ghosts” retelling Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol”. Of the three, “Fear” is the longest and Sale uses a crowd scene of Bruce Wayne’s Halloween party to include several other well-known characters, like Hobbes (of “Calvin and Hobbes” fame), Mike Allred’s Madman, Jeff Smith’s Bone, Dave Sim’s Cerebus, some Disney and “Wizard of Oz” characters, and Waldo. When Batman catches Scarecrow, he begins muttering, “Professor Crane isssn’t here right now. But if you’d like to make an appointment…?” (pg. 52). Christopher Nolan later worked this line into “Batman Begins”. “Madness” helps to reconcile how “Year One” Gordon has a daughter old enough to some day become Batgirl while including Leslie Thompkins. “Ghosts” is the shortest, though it tells a compelling story of Batman realizing that he needs to be a part of the world as Bruce Wayne and helps build the friendship between Wayne and Lucius Fox. The success of these stories later enabled Loeb and Sale to write “The Long Halloween” as a direct sequel to “Year One” as well as its follow-up, “Dark Victory”, and the interquel, “Catwoman: When in Rome”. Based on clues such as Gordon’s rank, references to Two-Face, and the absence of Catwoman and Robin, these stories likely take place sometime after “The Long Halloween”. Continuity aside, Loeb and Sale demonstrate their mastery of Batman stories while simultaneously crafting suitably atmospheric tales for Halloween. A must-read for fans of the Batman.

This is the first time I was exposed to Jeph Loeb's and Tim Sales' vision of Batman and was totally blown away. The first story, Fear, featured the Scarecrow as the main antagonist while the second, Madness, featured the Mad Hatter, were my two favorites. Both of these stories had the perfect combination of suspenseful story telling and incredible art work. The third story, Ghost, is a re-imagining of Charles Dicken's A Christmas Story which didn't do much for me. I don't recommend buying this print because of the recent announcement of the Jeph Loeb/Tim Sales Batman Omnibus (which includes Haunted Knight, Long Halloween, Dark Vitory, and Catwoman: When in Rome) to be release later in 2018.

This is a collection of three separate and unconnected short stories. There is an art to short stories. The story must feel complete and provide a climatic conclusion much quicker than a full-length graphic novel. The first two stories do this masterfully. The first one is a must for Scarecrow fans, while also managing to develop Batman's character. It has great action and a very satisfying ending. The second story is a kidnapping tale with the Mad Hatter as the villain. The story is gripping and dedicates some time to developing the character of James Gordon. It's worth mentioning that this is a fairly creepy story at times, but I never found it to go too far. Overall I thought it was as great as the first story. The third story left me feeling mixed. It is a retelling of a Christmas Carol with Batman characters. I'm a big fan of that story, so I definitely enjoyed reading it. It just felt very rushed. I would have liked for it to have been much longer and for it have more deeply explored the awesome concept. It doesn't help that that there is a full length graphic novel with this same premise. That being said, Tim Sale's artwork and design of the characters make it worth reading alone. Overall, if you are a fan of Jeph Loeb's and Tim Sale's take on Batman, as I am, I highly recommend this book.

Projects include “Alcatraz: Life on the Rock,” a traveling exhibition that opened on Ellis Island in October 2011 and the Trans Studio Science Center opened summer 2012 in Bandung, Indonesia. Prior to starting his company, Walhimer held positions at Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana, California; the Children's Museum ofIndianapolis; and Liberty Science Center. After over 30 years in museums and often teaching on museums we finally have a readable yet complete text for students. Mark Walhimer covers all the essential themes for beginners in museum studies within a series of short and very readable chapters. Added materials and handouts are included for student use which helps students get connected to the profession. I appreciated the emphasis on mission and ethics expected from practitioners. I will use it for my next museum class. The content is very current yet the mission of our profession is clearly defended to a new practitioners.

Museums 101 is a great place to start for anyone interested in learning how museums operate. The book is well organized and methodical in its approach. It is easy to read, offering many examples that cover different types of museums, ranging from large to small, historical, visual, scientific and live. The book seems especially geared toward readers who intend to start new museums, and includes a reference section, Museum Toolbox. There is also a useful website associated with the book that allows the reader to explore chapter topics in greater depth.

I really love this book, and appreciate the depth of knowledge that the author Mark Walhimer put into it. Mr. Walhimer clearly is a devotee of the world of museums, putting in lots of website addresses and names of institutions with locations. The book is laid out very well by chapter and subject headings. It carefully covers important details. As I read the book, I felt as though the author was sitting nearby speaking to me because it's written in layman's easy-going terminology. For me, this book is one that needs to be read straight through, then gone over once or twice to allow for follow-up to all the suggestions and advice. Museums 101 is a textbook suitable for educating oneself and it's an upbeat manual, not boring at all. I actually couldn't put it down until I went through it cover to cover, and I'm now on the 3rd reading so as to utilize the links and look up websites listed inside.

I don't write reviews typically, but I purchased this book in Kindle form to use as a resource in setting up a nonprofit museum. I had an issue with accessing the accompanying online resources, and sent a email not expecting a response for at least a day or two. I was not impressed. This book is full of fluff and short on specifics. It’s an infomercial for buying more of his training and courses. Waste of reading time.

This is a good book written for the new investor and experienced as well. The author is clark an concise and matter of fact with his observations and fact finding process. I am investing in multifamilyrealestate.com and gave started a syndication for my network to team up with me in buying apartment buildings with our multifamilysyndications.com and this is just one of the 100 books in my multifamily library!

I decided to rate this book a five star because it actually gets into the weeds of apartment investing. It doesn't promise no money down millions are going to fall in your lap. It just explains what is needed and why. Read it and learn something.

Commercial real estate is a 400 pound gorilla. It is very eye opening to find out that you probably already had enough money to get a multi-family unit at some point in your life. Chances are you will have the money again. This book is a great starting point but not the final destination.Essentially what you are dealing with are $10-$20 introduction books (by various gurus) which steer you to $500 courses. In the courses you get redirected to $6000-$10,000 mentorships.I definitely got value out of the book and I plan on getting emerging real estate markets but the level of specificity some of us are looking for would only be in the courses.

I kind of expected this book to just tell me things I already knew. Instead it breaks into detail different things such as dealing with contractors and agreements, insurance claims, negotiating, etc. I will turn to this book in the future when I have problems with my own properties.

This is one of very few books I actually read start to finish. I have been around real estate for most of my adult life and made plenty of mistakes myself. From my experience and acquired knowledge, David’s system is what you need to go to the next level.

This is my favorite book on multi family. David gives you the blueprint he used to build his 140 million real estate empire. He covers everything from how he finds and funds deals to how to find the best property managment companies to take care of your investments. I enjoyed this book and so will you to learn everything david has to teach pick up this book and also read his other book emerging real estate markets.

Read the book in a couple nights. Good information and lessons learned for folks just getting started. It was in-depth but basis at the same time. Highly recommended.

This book is so beautiful. I've been a lifelong fan of the Queen of Soul - Aretha Franklin so I bought the book for the photos more than for the story. This book over-delivers. The photographs are intimate, candid, revealing and insightful. The quality of the book is very well done. Easily one of the best purchases that I've made in some time.

I loved the variety of pictures

Beautifully photographed of Aretha from the very start of her career to the end. If you are a fan of The Queen Of Soul this is the book for you.

Excellent - would have loved to see more of her family but overall - a very good job

Library book. No purchase. Very enjoyable book. Lots of good information and magnificent photos, too. Aretha was a truly remarkable person in so very many ways. The best of Detroit, the best of Michigan and the USA. We saw her very small house in Memphis, before she and her Pop, C.L. became famous. To see where she ended up is truly an American success story. Easy read and very worthwhile. Great book.

A must have for all Aretha fans. Meredith and others did a wonderful job on putting this book together about this wonderful woman Aretha Franklin! From the beginning of her career to the last public performance. This is Aretha at her best in pictures. We L.O.V.E you Aretha and will always miss you. Long live the “Queen of Soul...Aretha Franklin”.
