TED Talks reminds me a little of a book I read decades ago… Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess. As I read that book I kept thinking, yes, interesting idea – and another. When I finished, I thought ok good pointers but will it make any difference? Then I played someone who I had never won against in dozens of opportunities and I beat them.Bobby Fischer’s book was one of the first popular books I read that used programmed learning… stepping the reader through a series of painless exercises. I’ve also seen that technique also used in a book that teaches math by setting up the problems faced by Euclid, etc. and giving readers enough clues so they too can reach their own aha moments. While TED Talks doesn’t use programmed learning, it is very painless reading, packed with lots of good ideas. You may not come away and be able to deliver a TED Talk right away but you will come away with at least several new ideas on how to improve your ability to get your message across in group settings.Anyone who has seen several TED Talks knows there is no one way to deliver the talks but the book has plenty to say about what generally doesn’t work and what does. I’ll just hit on a few that struck me as helpful:• Don’t give a sales pitch. The speaker’s job is to give to the audience, not to take.• Sometimes it takes a little demolition before changing minds. Example: In ancient societies, a third of men died violent deaths. Modern media plays up violence because that’s what sells. We've changed. After crushing their stereotypes, now you can go onto your points.• Take your audience down your own path of discovery. By asking them to join the process, they get more involved.• Make sure your words and images work together.• Don’t leave a slide up once you are finished with it. Better to put up a blank screen to avoid distraction.• Transitions in Keynote should be kept simple. Cut when shifting to a new idea. Dissolve when slides are related. Dazzle distracts.• Most TED speakers memorize and then practice so much it sounds spontaneous.• Wrinkled clothes telegraph you don’t try. If you don't care, why should they?• Breathe deeply, take your power pose. Be sure to hydrate.• Keep your notes by your water. When you grab a drink, you can quickly glance at where you are. Notes can be there if you need them. Hopefully, you won't.I’m sure you’ll come up with your own list of tips from this very helpful book.

A friend told me about this book as I was in the midst of preparing for a TEDx talk. I picked it up with the same enthusiasm a 5th grader has for homework: "Guess we have to do this now, siiiigh." It turned out to be a compelling enough read to have me blaze through it in one sitting, way past my bedtime. As head of TED, not only has Chris Anderson seen a lot of extraordinary speakers, but also a lot of terrible ones. So he knows the ingredients of both great and mediocre speaking, and how to transform the latter into the former. He presents a highly structured framework useful for beginners all the way to seasoned professionals:• Foundation: presentation literacy; idea building; common traps to avoid; and the all-important throughline• Talk Tools: connection; narration; explanation; persuasion; revelation• Preparation: visuals; scripting; run-throughs; the open and the close• On Stage: wardrobe; mental prep; setup; voice and presence.Anderson does a particularly deft job of explaining the throughline concept and emphasizing its importance. So many talks and pitches miss this point, consequently making only a fraction of their potential impact. What holds together the disparate elements of the talk? Without a clear throughline, listeners may never take any of your lovely ideas home with them. The advice in this book ranges from the lofty and overarching -- e.g. a show of vulnerability brings the audience to your side -- to the technical and specific -- e.g. busy patterns on shirts come out looking funny on video. You may want to speak your talk and transcribe *that* instead of writing it out first. As a professional speaker and speaking coach, I really appreciate how Anderson has compiled many trade secrets that are understood unconsciously but haven't necessarily been articulated all in one spot. And the illustrative examples drawn from all-time greatest TED talks -- Sir Ken Robinson, Elizabeth Gilbert, Jill Bolte-Taylor -- are alone worth the price of admission. If you are a professional speaker or an aspiring one, this is a supremely useful reference. I applaud that one of the main themes of the book is to *serve your audience*. If you only do that, all your talks can only improve. And special thanks to Chris, for being kind enough to release this book just in time for my 3rd TEDx talk :)-- Ali Binazir, M.D., M.Phil., Speaking Coach & Pitch Doctor, KNP Communications; author, The Tao of Dating: The Smart Woman's Guide to Being Absolutely Irresistible, the highest-rated dating book on Amazon for 4+ years

Some books are easy to imagine exploding into narrative form from an Author's lifetime of work. Then there are the books that probably took years of cajoling from well intentioned friends before they finally come to fruition. This book seems like the latter. In a quiet signature style, TED founder Chris Anderson takes readers behind the scenes of some of the most well known moments from the iconic TED stage and what it took for those speakers to get there. Before TED Talks, the idea of a 17 minute non-fiction talk going "viral" with millions of views would have been unheard of. The point this book makes over and over again is that this is the real power of a great talk in the right moment. It can turn companies around and inspire people like nothing else. The premise of delivering an actual TED talk may seem like the most intimidating way to try and improve your speaking skills. The vaunted position TED talks take in our consciousness could make it seem like an unapproachable ideal. Yet reading this book, the one belief that comes through loud and clear is that being a powerful speaker is a skill that is within reach for anyone. Rather than sharing a secret formula for an ideal TED talk, Anderson offers tips and techniques that TED speakers use, but which could be applied for anyone. Aside from having delivered 2 TEDx talks myself, I also currently teach storytelling and speaking at Georgetown University. I will be recommending this book to my students - and I highly recommend it to anyone seeking an actionable and entertaining book on becoming a more persuasive speaker as well.

It has been years since Jennie Buchanan walked out of Ethan Justice's life taking his heart with her. Jennie is getting ready to open a showing of her photographs to raise money for her charity Photos of Hope. Someone is determined that she not open her show and has threatened to kill Jennie. Ethan Justice and his siblings have been hired to protect Jennie.Having spent years trying to forget her, Ethan's family is worried that he will once again have his heart ripped out and they are not going to let that happen again. From the beginning Jennie tries to keep the walls up around her heart but is it time to let her guard down and allow people to care for her?As the threats on Jennie's life increase Ethan realizes that he is willing to do whatever it takes to protect her and that his heart never stopped caring for her. Will his love and skill be enough to keep Jennie safe and to show her what Christ's forgiveness is all about? This is the first in the Justice Agency books and as usual it seems for me I have read the series backwards! I read the 3rd one first, then read the 4th book and now have read this one. Thankfully each story can stand alone although having read the last two books I did know who Ethan would end up with. I really liked this story in that it has a lot of suspense, but it also has a great message of God's forgiveness along with our need to also forgive ourselves. The story was well developed and fast-paced and I never found myself ready to put the book up for the night. I read this during vacation so unfortunately I did have to put it up at times but was eager to pick it back up and get immersed in the story once more. In fact my husband had to do without my company for several miles of our drive today so I could finish! I'm looking forward to reading book 2 Dead Wrong soon.

This is the first book of Susan Sleeman's I have read, and am very pleased with it.Reading the description of the Justice Angency series reminded me of Dee Henderson's O'malley's (which I loved.) I am impressed with Ms. Sleeman's writing style and the premise of the book. Double Exposure is a well-written inspired suspense romance. It was a fast read, because the book was hard to put down. The suspense was riveting.Ms. Sleeman weaves God's lessons to be learned by Ethan and Jennie perfectly throughout the book. Some of them are: pride, forgiving ourselves as God as already forgiven us, letting the past go, seeing how God can use bad things in our lives to later help others, trust, and realizing God loves us no matter our pasts. Ethan and Jennie are likable and realistic. I enjoyed the introduction to the other Justice siblings. I am sure they will have interesting stories. Ordering Kat's story now! Happy Reading!

Susan Sleeman is one of my favorite authors'. I have read Double Exposure, Dead Wrong, and now High-Stakes Inheritance. All 3 books were so good! The action heats up quickly in this book, and I couldn't put this book down. Jennie is a photographer, and by mistake took pictures with drug lords in the back ground. The drug Lord and his helpers will do anything to destroy those pictures. Will her ex boyfriend be able to keep her save?I loved this book, and I hope you enjoy it too! I really enjoyed reading a Christian action packed thriller! I will be looking for more books by Susan Sleeman. Here is a sample from chapter 5Sirens wound through the air. A shooting would bring every available officer in the area. Probable an ambulance wail mixed in, too. He ran back to Jenie. Her eyes were glassy with shock. One hand pressed firmly against Ashley's stomach, the other circling her own waist. "You okay?" He dropped down next to her, stowing his gun so he didn't draw fire from arriving officers who could mistake him for the intruder. "no," She answered, her voice not more than a whisper. Her glazed eyes coupled with her own admission weren't good signs. He hoped the medics hurried. She looked as if she might pass out.

I liked the suspense part of the story. It was great and a good ending. I really like romance and suspense stories combined. My favorites are always when the couple in the story has a history of a break up or misunderstanding. This one however had too much back and forth reasoning with the woman going over the same things in her mind over why she broke up with the hero of the story. I thought the reason for her breakup was kind of stupid until I found out a little more what was behind her reasoning. Like I've said in other reviews though, writers can't write about perfect people all the time. There are people like her with low self esteem that think in their minds that no one could ever love them. I really liked Ethan. I did like the method the author used to finally pull Jeannie toward the right direction. She was the type of person that is hard to like though. I don't know how Ethan fell in love with her in the first place but that shows what a great character he was.

I love a good suspense book and this one delivers. This is the first book in "The Justice Agency" series of books which details 5 siblings who run their own private detective agency. There is a good balance of romance and suspense and I thoroughly enjoyed the importance that is placed on relying on God to meet our needs. I didn't end up figuring out "whodunit" until much later in the book, which is always a pleasant surprise while reading suspense novels. The characters are interesting and Ms. Sleeman does a nice job developing them. I did enjoy meeting the rest of the Justice siblings and look forward to reading their stories in the remaining books. The plot keeps moving throughout and is certainly a page-turner. Overall a nice job and great message.

I have an adopted granddaughter and loved the story that our family have lived the same life and now have great grandchildren another generation started. Adoption is such a wonderful time of helping others and protecting children thank you Susan for the story am starting book 2 right now

This Is Not a Valentine, by Carter Higgins

From School Library Journal

Gr 1–3—A little boy in a yellow shirt and glasses likes a girl in his grade school class. He brings her things like gumball machine jewelry that matches her shoelaces and his lucky rock. None of these gestures, among others, are valentines, he insists. After all, he likes this girl not just one day, but all the days. Almost every other page has the text and title of the book, "this is not a valentine," with not underlined. This proclamation is followed by a signal of everyday affection from the boy to the girl. Multimedia illustrations that mimic childlike drawings made with crayons and makers reinforce the grade school setting. As a children's picture book, the tender message of everyday acts of affection, as opposed to grand and less frequent gestures, is quite intellectual. Therefore, this book would make a good book for discussion with older children after it has been shared. VERDICT This enduring message of friendship should give this title a longer and broader shelf life than just another Valentine's Day book.—Mindy Hiatt, Salt Lake County Library Services

I adored this charming picture book by Carter Higgins! I can’t wait to stare this with my students for Valentines Day. From the already blown out wishes to lunch box PB & J students will relate to the ways we show others that we care - but of course they are NOT Valentines. A must own for classroom libraries. I can't wait to share this book with my fifth graders on Valentine's Day.

It's not! Carter Higgins has written a Valentine Day story that offers up the idea to readers that true friendship is unrelated to glitter, hear shaped cards, and sweet treats, but rather the moments shared. Through the constant reiteration that every action and token given is not a Valentine, there is an offering that feels more meaningful: noticing what his friend loves to do and wear, investing time in creating something for her, giving away a cherished possession, and being comfortable enough to be himself, to mention a few.

Adorable book on friendship that expands beyond just one day of the year. For this boy, Valentine's Day is not a day because he likes his friend all the days of the year and can't imagine limiting all those things reserved just for Valentine's Day to one day only. The cutest love letter ever.

This adorable story goes much deeper than glitter in its expression of love. A boy does not give a Valentine to a girl. Instead he shares a lucky rock, a secret hiding spot, and even a frog. The mixed media art is fabulous. Set at a school and rooted in a child’s perspective, This Is Not A Valentine illustrates some of the many little ways we can show someone how much we care.

I bought the book based on the reviews, but I find the book a little hard to follow and therefore disappointing. It is written in a way that is a little confusing and may be a hard reach for younger children in how it is worded. I am reading it to a 3rd grade class today, that will be the true test...

This is definitely a Valentine's Day book, but it's also definitely a book for all 365 days in a year. The charming concept is that a boy doesn't want to gift a valentine to his friend, because his affection for her lasts beyond just one day or one symbol in a gift.

Read this to my 4.5 yr old and 1.5 yr old and they didn’t care for it. It wasn’t a bad book - the illustrations were beautiful. My issue was the length and way it was written. More likely suited for 6+.

An everyday celebration of special friendships that don't need anything mushy or glittery to express how important they are. Love the author's take on things that are more special than valentines (gumball rings, lucky rocks, PB&J sharing) and the illustrator's depiction of the two friends when they are close together and when they're not. A love letter to the sweet ways friends express themselves.
