About the Author

J. H. Shapiro discovered Tyree Guyton's art while a docent at Michigan State University's art museum. She has been a social worker for the Department of Medicine at MI State. During a year in Hawaii, she volunteered at the Waikiki Aquarium and wrote about marine animals. She now lives and writes in Portland, Oregon, and leads school tours through the Portland Art Museum.

After visiting "The Heidelberg Project" in Detroit, my sister was inspired to educate her classroom on this ongoing and phenomenal expression of art and community activism. This book, along with many other "DOT" items were purchased. "Magic Trash" is a great tool for first graders to understand and embrace. Thank you, Mr. Shapiro, for translating this into a children's book. But mostly, thank you, Mr. Guyton, for sharing your talents, love and MAGIC!

I read Magic Trash to students in grades K - 2. They commented that they liked the pictures and they liked how Tyree's grandfather helped him. There is a lot to relate to in the story, that follows Tyree from elementary school through his success as an artist. The book led to discussions about dreams, mentoring, perseverance and reality (Tyree works a few jobs to pay the bills before he returns to his art). Students were fascinated by the illustrations showing the things Tyree made from found 'trash'. They also enjoyed reciting the poetic refrains. In addition, the book captures some of the turmoil that Detroit experienced in the late 1960's and how it changed the city. Secondary lessons were about cooperation and teamwork and how the neighborhood worked together to bring about change. The book was meaningful and inspirational and sparked the children's imaginations.

I am reading this to students and it is such a great book to go along with teaching students about the Heidelberg Project!

A Little wordy for a young group

I used this book for a toddler class at the museum where I work, and the children loved the illustrations and beautiful story. I would highly recommend it to anyone, especially art teachers.

I love cooking with Instant Pot, and a big reason is because of this book. The introduction includes a Tips and Tricks, which are life-saving when a beginner! I had no idea the Instant Pot makes yogurt, and the saute function is fantastic! I hardly use any other cooking utensils (pots/pans). The basic functions section is useful as well! Beef, pork, chicken, desserts, snacks. Everything! Love it!

I’m going on faith here that the recipes printed in this book might actually warrant a two star rating. Frankly, the arrangement of this book is just plain idiotic and makes simply locating a recipe a challenge. Don’t get me wrong, I love puzzles, but not when I’m trying to use a new piece of cookware. For starters, the book lacks an index. The table of contents is arranged by type of food: for example a section on meat, or a section on poultry. The recipes are then listed in page number order (WHY would you do this?) rather than alphabetically within the sections. And the table of contents stops the listings at page 138 so it’s anyone’s guess what recipes appear on pages 139 through 205. Those pages include sections on rice and pasta recipes, soups and stews, fish and seafood, snacks and appetizers, breakfast and brunch, and deserts.How do I know about the sections missing from the table of contents? I leafed through every single page. Is this something you want to do while planning your dinner? Probably not - if spending an hour trying to find a recipe fits within your schedule you are likely not the type of person who would purchase an Instant Pot to begin with. Basically, if you want to find specific recipes you are going to need hands full of page flags or post-it notes in order to locate them again - if you were lucky enough to find them in the first place. This book appears to be self published. Truly unfortunate as an editor or someone with any experience in the book publishing field would have been able to give the author at least a bit of advice on helping her readers use her book. I am positive a lot of thought went into this cookbook, and I am certainly hopeful that it will be of some use to me. But it’s going to require a whole a lot of work just to locate the tiny little recipe (most are only about a paragraph long) for whatever food type I would like to cook.I am more than a little afraid that there may be major typos or mistakes within the recipes themselves, given the fact that the author seems to have completely walked away from the project before finishing the table of contents or creating an index. Fingers crossed that something yummy will still come from these pages!UPDATE: Along with the problems already covered in this review, the book is full of typos. Decided to return it. What a waste of paper!

There wasn't much of anything I like about this cookbook. My very first disappointment was that there is no index. Second disappointment was that there is a LARGE section of vegetarian.vegan recipes - wasn't warned in the description and I am far from a vegetarian - would not have wasted my money.It did not take long to find a major error - a recipe titles Lamb something did not have Lamb it was a beef stew recipe. Yowser.The book did not have a Split Peas recipe - or maybe I couldn't find it the way the book was NOT organized.Going to send it back.

I wanted an Instant Pot to be able to cook real food during busy times rather than being tempted by pre-packaged or take out food. A majority of the recipes that I have seen from other source have ingredients like cans of soup or dry mixes that I would never use. Other books also have so many exotic ingredients that most home cooks don't have on hand. This book has so many recipes that use real food and ingredients that I either already have on hand or would also use for multiple recipes. There is nothing more frustrating than buying a bunch of spices that will only be used for one recipe that you may never make again. The book is organized in a way to easily find what you are interested in cooking.

Lousy recipes, wouldn't recommend to anyone I know, it has recipes that I got & tried from another cookbook & my family hated everyone of them, I had to throw out the food.

We purchased the book to get rid of cold sores. I don't know how the protocol works for genital herpes. We purchased supplements from a health food store instead of making the shakes. It cost $125, but it was worth it for the convenience. There are enough supplements for more than one round of treatment if you wanted to split the cost with someone. The treatment began in mid June, and lasted for 4 weeks. We went through the entire summer (with may very hot days) without seeing a cold sore. Maybe it worked!

I purchased this for a friend. She used the information and says it works. Hmmm interesting Tumeric, red onions, apples and grapes to name a few help heal herpes.

The book dont explain well if you should take the supplements and the shakes or one or the other,,i did take the supplements and the shakes and after 2 months i now have and outbrake.

best 20$ ive ever spent.
