Roland Smith first worked with animals at the Portland Zoo, and he has been involved in animal rescues and conservation work around the world for more than twenty years. He is the author of numerous books for young readers, including JACK'S RUN, ZACH'S LIE, CRYPTID HUNTERS, PEAK, TENTACLES, and the Storm Runners series. I am a teacher and like to read the books that my students are interested in so that I can be knowledgeable enough to discuss the books with them. Storm Runners was not my first Roland Smith book, so I expected the same great writing and suspense that I found in Cryptid Hunters. The suspense and plot were well laid out and kept my full attention, but the abrupt ending of this short novel was a huge disappointment. After reading the sequel, Surge, I felt that the two books could easily have been combined into one book, which would have made more sense and not required me to buy two very small books. If you put the two Storm Runners books together they are still not as thick as the Cryptid Hunters book. So, I spent $11.98 for two books that are smaller than one I spent $6.99 for. Not sure if this was a marketing strategy or the publisher just wanted more money, but in my opinion, this was not the best way to present the story.

While the first book in the series started off a bit slow, I really liked the story quite a bit as a whole, but can't for the life of me justify another $3.99 to read the third "book".These books are way too short. I was shocked when the first book completely ended smack dab in the middle of the story.And...I was ticked.Had all these been combined into one gripping novel, (without the acronym "WPP" showing up everywhere), I would have given this four or five full stars.Readers get really angry and disenchanted with a writer when they pay for a full book that's read in a couple of hours.They're supposed to be novels with at least 75,000-100,000 words.Man. This series would have been perfect as one complete novel. Too bad. I'm going to have to write my own conclusion to the series in my head (It'll be super happy, where all the animals were just fine).I will add that this author is a pretty good writer (he is). I just wish he'd gone about this differently.Note to animal lovers: Many animal deaths & descriptions in this series. I never get warnings myself, but wish for them, so there ya go...

Storm Runners is a great story with awesome action and confusing parts.Chase is the main character in the story. He goes to school with a girl named Nicole. A hurricane named Emily headed to their school. They head back to their home on a school bus, but it flips. They get stuck in the swamp. The confusing parts are when the author introduces characters without explaining who they are in the beginning. This is a warning, but keep reading it because it gets good.I recommend this book to my brother Cole and to other people who like books with action. Even though the beginning is confusing, it has amazing action, and I think people will like it.

THe story was interesting and definitelyk geared to a young (5th grade) audience. The three stars were gived because there was no warning that it would NOT END in any satisfactory way. There were so many things left up in the air. I know it is first of a series of several but I always hated soap operas for the same reason. At least give some semblance of resolution at the end of a book. If you like reading series of books, it would likely be enjoyable tor most.

Like many of Smith's books, this one presents a survival situation where the main character must use his/her wits to survive. The book provides just enough tension to make the reader want to finish the book and find out what happens to Chase and his new found friends. Being the first of a trilogy, however, means that the book ends on a cliffhanger. Chase's situation presents the reader with a glimpse into just how terrifying and dangerous hurricanes really are. Recommended for those who like survival stories.

This series was great. Went to check it out before giving it to my grandson and couldn't put the books down until I finished reading them. Grandson will be starting them soon.

The third book in the Storm Runners trilogy has a new setting, but the man v. nature conflict continues and is as engaging as the battle against the hurricane. Loose circus animals continue to be a problem for our plucky protagonist, and reluctant readers will enjoy this adventure as much as the previous two.

My 7 year old loves for me to read to her and these books have played a big part in getting her interested in reading.

I MUST get started on the next book in this series....NOW!!! This thrilling story about how terrioristrk for years to set up events, corrupt politics, a secret society, covert warriors......you will not be able to put this story down! Last night I even dreamed that I was in the story! The identity of the politician who was a traitor will totally surprise you. So will the ending. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED READING!

I am getting to like this series more and more. I listen to the book off my phone as it helps me to listen to the story and absorb it better. To me it was well worth doing this. To see the characters evolve was really great, and to slowly see and become a part of a complex and twisting plot was just as good. I enjoyed this book, and I have the next in the series to digest in the next few weeks. Thanks again.

What a fantastic read. I started the series out of order not knowing that it was a series and I am not a pursuer of political books ... they usually bore me. But this one was crammed packed with ACTION!!! There was a twist among all that action that made me gasp out loud! Stokes and his men continue to fight the good fight. Out the first 3 entire books of this series .... this one is the best so far! Well done Sir!!!

Mr. Cooper writes a solid action novel. He's a little loose on plot development but the characters are good and getting better in this second novel in the series. I'll be interested how he continues to develop both his characters and stories in later books in the series.

Corps Justice 2nd book is just as riveting as it's predecessor. I have to get up in a mere five hours yet here I am determined to finish reading this adventure. While I realize this is fiction, I'll probably be thinking differently about what could be going on in Washington. If you're disappointed after reading this, contemplate changing genres.

Cal Stokes, technically the owner of SSI, still recovering from wounds he received in the action involved in killing Dante West (West killed his true love) when he's given new tasking by the Council of Patriots. That endeavor reveals a plot by the Japanese and a U.S. Senator to take over the U.S. government. Hang on, this ride is rough, rowdy, and deadly. Cooper's writing skills are going to keep you glued to the pages all the way to the end.

I read and loved the original Millionaire Next Door with its ground breaking (well, at least to me) findings that ordinary Americans can achieve riches using the American way of hard work and a frugal life style (and a bit of luck too!). Finding, for example, that people who drive flashy cars may well be living paycheck to paycheck and from lease payment to lease payment, made me view conspicuous consumption in a new light. It seemed to me that Dr. Stanley was intrigued by his research into wealthy people and by the paradox he found that wealthy people often didn't give the impression that they were wealthy, frequently being particularly frugal, while people who did give the impression of being wealthy (flashy cars etc) often had very little wealth, frequently having negative net worth due to debt.In the original book, a clear path ahead was laid out to becoming wealthy by spending less that you earn and investing savings in appreciating assets. These findings have been echoed by many others since the original book was published. If you haven't read the original Millionaire Next Door, then I would suggest that you do so, even though some of the data are out of date. I did follow the advice in the original book (and advice in other books) and I am now a multi-millionaire so I can vouch for the validity of the ideas in the original Millionaire Next Door.Dr. Stanley was tragically killed in an auto accident and his daughter has now undertaken to carry on her fathers work and has published this book.Sadly this book does little to advance the themes of the original Millionaire Next Door. There have been a number of potentially significant changes since the original book was published including the increasing concentration of wealth into the top few percent, the stagnant or decreasing wages of those without a college degree, and the increasing college debt of younger people. How has all this affected how ordinary working Americans can achieve wealth? Few new ideas are presented. Consequently I am unable to recommend spending the money on it. Perhaps if we follow the advice of the original Millionaire Next Door of being frugal, frugal, frugal then maybe borrow it from you local library and put the money saved in appreciating assets.

If you read the first book (The Millionaire Next Door), this new one provides a valuable update with new research to help understand a few things that have changed over the past 20 years as well as what has stayed the same. This book will “FIRE” you up (pun intended) and will continue to reinforce the LBYM (live below your means) mantra. To that end, you won’t find the Millionaires in this updated sample driving Jaguars, Range Rovers and Porches! However, there were new interesting tidbits as it relates to investing with this Millionaire sample. They are human and make mistakes which makes for interesting discussion points of “how does this set of people have the drive, determination, control…etc. to go against the grain and accumulate a millionaire net worth, yet still fall into some of the traps (market timing for instance) that a lot of other people fall into?”If you’ve never read the first book and are unfamiliar with Dr. Stanley’s work, this book will become one of the more important books you will read. Do you want to become financially secure? Well, who better to learn from than the folks that have actually done it. You will learn that a few small decisions can make a profound impact in wealth building over time and it does take time…building financial independence for those of us that didn’t win the lottery or receive a large inheritance takes discipline and occurs in what feels like slow motion, but it is a proven method that works again and again.

I would consider the original Millionaire Next Door written by the late Dr. Stanely to be one of the few books that has changed my life by influencing my major decisions. Over the years, I have read it again and again. I had high hopes for this brand new updated version but was disappointed.I think the biggest problem with this book that it is too jumbled and written in two voices. On the one hand we have Dr. Stanley's daughter writing large chunks of it, and on the other hand, we have far too many directly taken pieces from the Dr.'s blog. Making things worse, the daughter is always trying to give credit to the father, so throughout she writes in the plural "we did....", "we think...", etc. I wish she had just written the whole book herself in her own voice and omitted all the blog posts. It seemed to me that she had a lot of raw data such as letters from people over the years, and numerous surrveys, but she was not able to put all the information together in a way to glean insights. As a result, I got far less from this book than I could have, it does not have a clear framework or set of takeaways, at least not different or thought-provoking enough compared to the original.

The original Millionaire Next Door is hard to beat - it was a unique source of data that provided insights into the characteristics of millionaires. While the New Millionaire Next Door provided data from a recent survey of ~1,000 respondents, it was buried in a very wordy treatise that struck me as an advertisement for another book in the series.

Weak version of original. I expected updated info, this was a regurgitation of information and felt like I was listening to someone tell me about the last book.

The Next Millionaire Next Door is a nice follow up to the original book. It has the exact same message and conclusion about building wealth, but the data is updated for the year 2015. I'm glad we got the updated data. I'm giving the book a 4 out of 5 stars because it was too long for coming to the same conclusion as the original. A lot of times it felt like the same discussions were repeated over and over unnecessarily. Good follow up book, but not as entertaining as the original.

Such an excellent and timely book. The author does a great jobs of turning the raw undeniable data into easy actionable steps to financial success. It’s everything I expected from The Millionaire Next Door, but set in 2018. I originally purchased as a hardback but I hope to download on Audible soon. As a professional financial advisor, I’m recommending this book to all my clients!

Then he got PBS to air his shows. Now he has about 100.Steves believes that in addition to hotels, restaurants, and tourist sites, his travels provide political insight. By talking to locals, he knows what people really think. Steves recently published the third edition of “Travel as a Political Act,” (TAPA) first published in 2009. While much of the book is unchanged, there is plenty of new material reflecting recent events.In addition to his travels, Steves claims that he benefits from being a history major. Those who don’t travel are “dumbed down.” Let’s test Rick Steves’ own knowledge using the following assertions from TAPA.1. Hitler was elected Chancellor in 1933.2. In 1967 Israel made a surprise attack on the Arabs in order to grab their land.3. Corporations are required by law to maximize their short-term profits.4. Switzerland has a much higher tax burden than the United States.5. American Prohibition produced nothing but grief.6. American college professors are bastions of free thinking.7. A memorial in El Salvador honors loved ones who died fighting the United States.The statements are all false. These are factual errors, not differences of opinion. All are paraphrased from the book, except for number four, which is implied by a conversation reported by Steves. Let’s look at the individual statements.1. Hitler was appointed Chancellor after political maneuvering. He never won a fair election.2. Israel launched a surprise attack in order to survive. Arab government broadcasts called for the destruction of Israel. Arabs blockaded Israeli access to the Straits of Tiran. After the Six Day War ended, Israel offered to return the land.3. This is a common misperception. See Lynn Stout’s article in the April 16, 2017 New York Times. In the Hobby Lobby case the Supreme Court ruled “Modern corporate law does not require for-profit corporations to pursue profit at the expense of everything else, and many do not.”4. In Switzerland the overall tax burden in 2017 was 27.9 percent of domestic income. In the U.S. the number was 26.4 percent. See the Heritage Foundation’s Index of Economic Freedom.5. Cases of cirrhosis declined drastically during Prohibition. See the Wikipedia article on the subject.6. Anyone who has heard of political correctness knows better. In Missouri a professor called for using “muscle” to remove a journalism student recording her actions. A recent Wall Street Journal poll found most students are afraid to express their views in class. They’re subjected to political lectures on subjects that have nothing to do with the course. Even the professors are being harassed. A professor at Yale was forced to resign for saying that students should be able to pick their own Halloween costumes. A professor at Evergreen State College was harassed into resignation for objecting to voluntary racial segregation and wanting to focus on teaching.7. America was never a belligerent in the Salvadoran Civil War. If anyone holds responsibility, it was the Marxist rebels; who didn’t boycott elections because they expected to win. The Marxists even shot at those attempting to vote.All the above are factual errors or omissions of relevant information. Time and space constraints prohibit discussion of all the problems with this book. For example, Steves can’t find a single Iranian who was unhappy with the regime. This was a year before the government had to steal an election and brutally suppress a revolt. Yet he thinks his travels give him special insight into what people really think.The book sometimes disparages those Steves disagrees with. In addition to being dumb they are needlessly fearful. Yet the book contains the usual climate change scare. Steves doesn’t mention that the climate has been changing since the Big Bang. He is unaware of Alex Epstein’s work showing that catastrophic climate deaths have declined by 98 percent over the past 80 years.Parts of this book, such as the chapter on drug policy, are worth reading. Despite the error on Prohibition, he makes a cogent case that drug laws should be relaxed. However, he doesn’t address:• the health risks of decriminalization;• the fact that most inmates confined for possession are sellers who plea-bargained for reduced charges to possession; or• the often-reckless behavior of those under the influence.The book has other merits. The descriptions of the lives of the downtrodden is moving, such as the woman living under a tin roof in El Salvador. The chapter on the former Yugoslavia is informative and sometimes moving. One photo shows a resident of Dubrovnik holding the shell of the mortar that destroyed his house.The book is very readable and entertaining throughout. The content has some merit, like the summary above. For those reasons I do not provide a one-star rating. However, it is too tendentious and factually unreliable to recommend. Two stars is fair.

The chapter on Morocco & Turkey and talks of towns with large populations that follow Secular Islam like Istanbul & Tangier that are welcoming to Christian and other foreign travelers makes me want to visit. And according to Rich Steves, one of the more enjoyable experiences you'll have in Morocco is walking through Tangier's at night, to experience the people and their welcoming attitude to all visitors.Rich covers the political conflicts with Israel and the Palestinians, where you come away understanding the pain the Palestinians must feel having their home land taken away by a league of foreign governments. And that their most likely will not be a good solution to this conflict as long as the two societies stay separated by walls where the populations are not able to meet and find some common ground.The book also delves into systems and governments that work better than are own in some aspects of community life and how we may want to take some of these practices to see if they work well back home in the USA.Mark Twain "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow mindedness".

Rick Steves is one of my favorite travellers. He is fully willing to admit that not everything he does is always the best thing. He recognizes that many people have many different goals when travelling. In this book he explains his growth as a traveller and the adventures he has had throughout Europe. It is a great book that touches on a lot of things that smaller travel writers can't fully grasp.

Rick Steves is a citizen of the world, and his encouragement to the rest of us is well known. The spirit evident in this book will be familiar to his readers. But easygoing can slip into superficial, and Mr. Steves would have been well to stay on firmer ground with his histories and characterizations. One example is Erdogan’s Turkey, which assigns too much importance to an individual autocrat and too little to the previous military leaders, corrupt politicians and warring ethnicities. Politics is not a blank canvas. I like his enjoyment of the individual, too, but sometimes he veers into stereotype there, too. Great photos throughout and a virtuous approach.

A must read book for anyone who travels. It brings new insights into a wide range of countries and open your eyes to learning from the people in the country, rather than a tour consisting of tourists. Tours are great but get out and learn about a country's culture. I may never visit Iran, but this chapter opened my eyes. Rick Steves is an enlightened and useful guide to many countries, this helps your appreciate a country's culture and yearn to learn more. M
