I just started reading it and it has a lot of wonderful dresses and they recommend certain ones for absolute beginners. It has the patterns included in the book. Great value and lovely dresses.

This book has it all! Patterns with drafting instructions! I didn't know at first if I would like the book, as I'm a lazy seamstress and I hate tracing and drafting, but this book is a great read and offers endless options with thorough instructions. Every bodice has modification ideas . For the skirts, she has included instruction on how to make it as a standalone skirt. There are a myriad of fit adjustments included, along with your average primer on basic sewing.I appreciate that the patterns aren't watered down. Do be warned, if you don't like tracing, you will HATE this book. The patterns are nested Burdastyle type sheets printed front and back. The larger sizes are faded out rather than different line styles. The different pattern pieces do not overlap, so it won't be too much of a pain to deal with.

This book is amazing -- it definitely lives up to its tagline: the ultimate dressmaking guide. This book goes beyond the pattern pieces and how to mix them. With clear line drawings and easy to understand written instructions, the author shows you how to alter pattern pieces to achieve your desired look. The hardest decision was to figure out which dress I'd make first. For my first dress, I made the strapless bodice and paired it with the half-circle skirt. I've never properly fit a strapless before and it fits beautifully!!! Amazing!! I know I'll be creating custom dresses for myself for years to come.

I just received my book, and at first I was dismayed to see the sizes only went up to 12. I am a size 20 (working on getting smaller), but was looking forward to making some cute clothes to wear whatever size I am. I thought the size limitations should have been addressed in the description portion of the Amazon site so it would be clear. I contacted the author and she was quick to respond and explain that her size 12 fits a bust of 50.5 inches, or size 20 (but I think that means in size 20 in ready-to-wear (RTW) store bought clothes, not pattern sizing). This helps, because it is closer to my measurements (52") and easier to make the adjustents to pattern to size up. I wear size 20 in RTW but that corresponds to a size 32 pattern. (For newbie sewers, take note, you need to shop pattern size by your measurements, not by your normal RTW size, and you probably won't like the number you end up with for a pattern! However, this is at least closer to my size and I should be able to alterate the pattern size to my measurements. This was a great relief. I am looking forward to using this book and its patterns to "design" myself some cute apparel.

I had made probably 3 or 4 dresses before getting this book, so I'd put myself at "confident beginner." Now, I wish I had started with this one! I really, REALLY hate tracing, but it really wasn't so bad with this. I just got a roll of tracing paper from the art and craft store and got to work. So far, I've made three dresses with it, all using the princess bodice and circle skirt. It's easy to modify the patterns, too, with the instructions in the book. I feel like a real seamstress with all the modifications I've been able to add! People at work have even started paying me to sew for them!I started sewing because I like full skirts and vintage-esque dresses, but they're getting more and more difficult to come by. I always felt like going through packaged patterns was daunting, and it would take me a week to make a dress. Now, I can finish one in around 6 or 7 hours. Absolutely love this book, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes to sew their own dresses. It's just SO much simpler with her patterns.

I've been trying to teach myself how to sew after taking a single introductory class to sewing that covered the basics of the machine and hemming. So, I bought this book along with several others and found this to be the least beginner friendly -- at least, not for a novice like me. I've made dog coats, neckties and zippered pouches but that's about it. I intend to try the basic bodice and basic skirt out of this book, but have found myself needing to google terminology that the book does not describe. For example, I know what interfacing is (as I've had to use it in ties), but didn't know there was "facing" fabric as well. The book explains how to use facing fabric, lining fabric and interfacing, but does not explain what they are (obviously lining fabric is self-explanatory but this was the first time I ever heard of facing fabric). In any event, the book is still a tiny bit too advanced for me, but I love all the dress options and the fact that they allow for a very wide range of sizes (from 32-24-34 through to 50.5-42.5-52.5), which accommodates my small frame much better than a lot of other modern dressmaking books.

Love this book! I am not very experienced with sewing clothing, I'd say a confident beginner. I learned SO MUCH from this book. My daughter picked out the Mock Wrap dress with the Blue Skies modifications & it turned out great! I was a little worried when I first started as I have never traced my own patterns or modified anything, but by the end I developed an intuition based on Tanya's methods to adjust the pattern. That is huge for me. I feel like after sewing patterns from this book I am better able to understand clothing patterns overall. I love the styles she presents, leaning toward the classic & vintage style, but you can make it all your own with the basic skirts and bodice patterns she gives you. I also love that you get instructions if you want a stand alone skirt or blouse. I highly recommend this book!

Growing up during the Depression in New York, Mary was doted on by her loving parents and was often found playing with her two brothers, Joseph and John. Her father's death at 54 was the first tragedy of young Mary's life. Her mother was forced to take in lodgers to make ends meet, and a variety of eccentrics traipsed through the Higgins household. Mary opted for secretarial school over college, knowing that money was a constant concern for her family. After a few years as a secretary, Mary daringly decided to apply to be a flight attendant, and she spent a year flying around the world. She returned to marry Warren Clark, a dashing family friend who had captured her heart long ago. Together the pair had five children, and while caring for them, Mary diligently worked on her writing. She sent out story after story, facing the rejection that deters so many writers. Mary persevered, eventually getting a story accepted. But Warren's health was failing, and he died of a heart attack in 1964. Following his death, Mary took a job writing for a radio program, and eventually began working on the novels that brought her so much success. I felt like I knew Mary Higgins Clark after reading her memoir, "Kitchen Privileges." Written with great warmth and humor, Mary shares her story, very much an American success story. While I expected to marvel at her phenomenal professional success as a writer, I was equally impressed by her incredible spirit and work ethic. A young widow, Mary returned to work full-time writing radio shows and wrote her fiction for two hours each morning before she woke her five children for school. Inspired by an acrtress friend, Mary even finds the time and energy to attend Fordham University to obtain a degree! Mary's talent for telling good stories brought her worldwide recognition and great success, but it is her spirit and down-to-earth confidence that caused me to admire her even more.

Reading this book was a spiritual experience. I love all of her books and am grateful that she is still writing. This story of her life, how she faced her challenges, and still raised an exceptional family is inspirational. She stayed true to her values which was not always easy but always essential. She is one of my heroes. Thank you!

I must admit that I have never read a Mary Higgins Clark book before. But I purchased this book for a friend who is an avid reader of Mary Higgins Clark. I read the description on Amazon, and I later also purchased it for myself. What a wonderful person Ms. Clark is and an exciting life she has led. She has overcome many obstacles and tragedies in her life and has a positive, can do it attitude! I think you will enjoy her book.

Like everyone who visits bookstores I've seen Mary Higgins Clark's books. I never had the slightest inclination to pick one up until now. As a writer I'm always interested in how successful authors do it and when I saw this autobiography in the store I tried to purchase it. Alas, the store clerk refused to sell it to me. It was being held until November the 19th. This is the first time a bookstore has ever refused to sell me a book and I went home with my curiostiy piqued. When the 19th arrived I headed back and snatched up a copy.As it turns out, Clark is an interesting woman, whose New York childhood and tender first marriage made her the writer she is today. After reading Kitchen Privileges I'm ready to check out her other works, starting with her first book on George & Martha Washington.

I'm just half way through, but this is a wonderful autobiography of MHC. She is such a good writer that the pages (and delicious highlights from her life!) just fly by!

If you like reading Mary Higgins Clark you will Love Kitchen Privileges: A Memoir. It is like you are sitting in her kitchen having a cup of tea and she is just talking directly to you.I am so very glad that she followed her dreams!I love her books!

I have all of Mary Higgins Clark's books. She introduced me to psychological suspense stories and now I work in the psychology field. Reading her book of her life and how she entered the writing world has endeared her even more to me. I hope she writes many more books.

I loved this book about my favorite author. Very well written and interesting.

Sound is almost always around us, anywhere, at any time, reaching our ears and stimulating our brains for better or worse. Sound can be the disturbing noise of a drill, a merry little tune sung by a friend, the song of a bird in the morning or a clap of thunder at night. The science of sound, or acoustics, studies all types of sounds and therefore covers a wide range of scientific disciplines, from pure to applied acoustics. Research dealing with acoustics requires a sound to be recorded, analyzed, manipulated and, possibly, changed. This is particularly, but not exclusively, the case in bioacoustics and ecoacoustics, two life sciences disciplines that attempt to understand and to eavesdrop on the sound produced by animals. Sound analysis and synthesis can be challenging for students, researchers and practitioners who have few skills in mathematics or physics. However, deciphering the structure of a sound can be useful in behavioral and ecological research – and also very amusing.This book is dedicated to anyone who wants to practice acoustics but does not know much about sound.
