I wasn't really sure what I was getting into when I first purchased this book. I was really scouring the internet to find a good poetry book for a class and I -- either being obnoxious or trying to be quirky -- found this book and bought it almost solely because I adored the title. Now I do not recommend impulse buys, but if you're going to buy it, here's a little information about the novel. (Note I am not a professional this is just my opinion)THIS BOOK IS NOT ABOUT POLE DANCING TO GOSPEL HYMNS: IT'S ABOUT IRONY AND PAINFUL TRUTHS LIKE THE TITLE REPRESENTS.So if you're mind is set on a pretty girl strutting her stuff, stop right there buddy.This book offers insight into a lot of different problems that currently face and plague humanity and then offer solutions in graceful and peaceful ways but being strong all at the same time. It's about standing up for what you as the reader believe in to help crush injustices the world faces, a specific quote from El Mozote provides this vision perfectly"We who walk among the land of the relatively freehave an obligation to hunt down truthhave an obligation to lift our voices against any more paininflicted on anyone in our names."Gibson's messages are easily accessible to the reader who is willing to see the injustice of a system. The book touches on every aspect of inequality, from race to sexuality to rape, but also touches on the subject of love. Personally I hate reading multiple poems about love because they get gross and cliche and boring. (We get it, you dig this person) But she breaks up the love poems with the other messages in the book (Which might be her way of describing life ((It's not all about love))) Some of the poems are long and kind of long, and sometimes get a bit ranty, but the conflicts of the poem are reinforced by these repetitious techniques used. Also some of these poems are incredibly hard to read because of how graphic they get in content, but now a days the only way to get a person's attention is by a slap in the face and I think it drives the message further than any bulls*** garbage censored content would ever provide. It's very enlightening.If you're looking for something as a fun read, I wouldn't recommend.but if you're looking for raw emotions, to feel things in a way that can't exactly be explained, a new outlook,buy this. You will not be disappointed.

These gut-wrenching poems are so freaking beautiful. I had to remind myself to breathe while holding back tears in awe of what I was reading. I love the descriptiveness, the rhythms and cadences... the statements! It felt empowering and cathartic, even in the toughest moments, because they GET it. I'll be reading more (as in, everything) by Gibson now.

This was an unexpected surprise. My aunt had come across the title when she made me a quilt with a book theme. I ordered it out of curiously and immediately fell in love. It's a collection of poems that really hit hard, especially given the current state of our country. Beautifully written, thought provoking, and truly deep, it is a book that I hope to share with others.

I first heard of Ms. Gibson via Patti Digh's blog, 37 days. She had a video posted of Andrea performing her poem, "Say Yes". After hearing her, I trashed all of my ink pens and quit writing my pathetic little poems because she is that good.I bought this book and two of her CD's (from [...]---the sweetest Internet company I've ever dealt with!) and picked my pens out of the trash can and wrote a poem for the first time in a long time. To say she's inspiring is like saying blood is red or the sky is blue or there's only one you. She's a force. She's a poem. She makes me happy to just be. Her poems are like the sun. Buy this book and be illuminated.

Wow~ outrageously beautiful poems~ completely unique voice~ memorable images. I love this book and will be tracking downas much of Gibson's writing as I can find. My daughter also shared with me one of Gibson's youtube videos as she is performingher poems. She is intense and fascinating. So happy to have discovered this brilliant poet!

Dr. Thiederman cuts to the heart of the "real" diversity issues and gives both intellectual and real world help and resources. The book covers all the essential information and provides resources for group and individual learning - both personal and in the workplace.

This book is a required reading for the diversity course I am taking. It is exactly what I was looking for and I received it quickly.

It's a sad commentary on our society that we move from one fad idea to another while clinging to age old problems.I purchase this book because it describes real issues I face in my organization. There was so much goodness in this book that I think I have something highlighted on every page. I loved the idea of a set of clearing tools to help put aside our false identities and empowerment tools to live within our true identity.I also loved the connection between many personal growth ideas and the truths of the gospel woven together. Sometimes I struggle to find that so I loved hearing the scriptures that back up ideas I’ve read about in the personal growth world. I often think we’re all talking about the same principles, just in different ways. I think Brooke has a gift for finding those connections.

When I read the title of this book, my initial thought was, "I don't really think I have a problem with identity". After all, I'm gratefully a work from home mother, and feel sure in my decisions in life and feel very blessed. It only took the first 2 pages for me to realize there was far more to understanding my identity than I had perceived, and I had lessons to learn from Brooke that would no doubt improve my life. I was afraid of feeling overwhelmed at the prospect of changing so many life long thoughts and actions, but Brooke has such a way of putting things into words and action steps without an ounce of overwhelm. In fact, she makes me feel like I can be 100% successful at achieving the eternal perspective and assurances of who I am and my true potential. One of my favorite phrases from this book is, "when you truly understand who you are, you also understand who your neighbor is." That's the power of the book, really. To help us understand our identity and in return do so much good in the world as neighbors, parents, friends and family. I'm most motivated to apply the principles she teaches so that I can raise my kids to better understand their identity, as I am much more aware now for how important that really is. Brooke is one of the most insightful and inspirational women I have ever known. You will ADORE and TREASURE her wisdom!

I have LOVED reading Brooke's book! She includes many tools to help empower and create the life you want. There are also many tools we can use to clear negative feelings and thoughts. I love how she uses stories to illustrate many of her points. Stories are powerful and help me remember ideas. I have been so inspired by this book and the Brooke Snow Podcast! So many tidbits of wisdom. Thank you for having the courage to write this book, find your own true identity, and help me along my journey to live in my true identity!

This book is very well written, easy to understand and full of wisdom and inspiration. Brooke Snow provides tools that can easily be implemented in everyday busy schedules to aid in self awareness and progression. I especially loved the journal prompts and workbook layout that encourages action, I have found that these have made me act more promptly and frequently. This is such a wonderful thought provoking book!
