I often read Cliffs Notes as a companion to the novel. I have found that Cliffs Notes has the most thoughtful and comprehensive commentary of any other literature guide out there. However, the notes on Shelley's Frankenstein was a major disappointment. The commentary does not provide any major insight into the themes, characters, or style of the novel. In most cases, the commentary for each chapter is just a more detailed summary of the plot. The guide does provide some useful information on the Romantic and Gothic elements of the novel, but there is so much more to Frankenstein than just the conventions of the literary time period. If you are only looking for something to help you understand the plot, than this book will serve that purpose. But if you need help understanding the deeper implications of Shelley's work, don't waste your time or money on this poorly written summary.

Seeing as how I didn't like Frakenstein very much at all, this book kept me at least fairly interested in the novel. The novel is very long, repetitive, and extremely slow at times, and the book helps make it a lot faster, and reviews the main plot so the complicated sentence structure of the book is easier to decode. Also, Cliffs notes tells about the literary messages of the novel, hard to figure out unless you know about romanticism, and explains most of the olden-style vocabulary. Finally, there is an excellent character web that explains all the relationships. All in all, helped me a lot with the novel.

Not what I expected, very good

Good read

It arrived quickly in a good condition. My daughter needed this book to understand Frankenstein since it was not an easy one.

Most interpretations of this novel are flawed because they are based Victor Frankenstein's own opinions, which are not confirmed by any other character or by the outcome of the narrative. Victor's grim view of his own career and particularly his creature commences at the moment when the creature comes to life and fails, like any artist's work, to meet the creator's high hopes. By his own admission, Victor has deprived himself of sleep and nourishment, not to mention even the slightest social intercourse such as letters to his family might have provided. He is on the verge of a physical and nervous breakdown which overtakes him on the very next day and from which he does not recover for many months. In this condition, when he sees the creature suddenly open its eye and move, and somewhat later smile upon its creator and reach out towards him, its ugliness appalls him, for the labor is now complete and all imperfections are irremediable. Mere ugliness is the sole flaw which Victor notices in his work, but that is sufficient to drive him from it and thus to allow it to escape. This mistake is ultimately to blame for the creature's learning to hate mankind. Since Victor has been so obsessively preoccupied with the task of conferring life upon dead matter, he has made no provision for the next step, and the creature is allowed to wander abroad without supervision or care. Victor is totally unaware of its innocence until after its goodness has been crushed by yet more human prejudice against physical ugliness. Indeed, Victor does not hear his creature's side of the story until after the innocent William has died, and it would be surprising indeed if the brother's grief and self-reproach left him capable of recognizing the creature's innocence of evil intent in the death of William. We know, however, that he did not intend to kill the child in spite of the world's having thoroughly educated him in brutality and hatred. On the contrary, even at that late date he intended to make William his friend. Yet Victor cannot accept his true responsibility for having failed to provide for his creature as his own parents had provided for him. Rather, his heavy sense of guilt induces him to shift the blame to the science which led him to create the being in the first place. Just as he calls science ``unlawful'' for taking him away from the calm and serene enjoyment of his family even though it is clear that his own obsessive-compulsive nature is at fault, so he also blames science for bringing the creature into the world whereas its evil was not innate but learned. Parental irresponsibility is simply too heavy a burden for Victor to carry. Critics, however, accept his assessment of the situation, especially that aspect of his interpretation which arises when, by a flash of lightning, he catches sight of the creature in the storm and supposes it to be the murderer of William. The fact that this guess is in fact correct is probably why its rashness is not more generally recognized, and once we accept this piece of the speech, the rest of it follows although it is nothing but the most violent hysteria. Beginning with the naive assumption that ``nothing in human shape'' could have committed so heinous a crime (for Victor hasn't had the benefit of the twentieth-century press), he says that the creature had to be guilty, declaring in defiance of all his scientific training that ``the very existence of the thought was an inescapable proof of the fact.'' And from this reckless reasoning he moves on to the fanciful view of the creature as ``my own spirit let loose from the grave and forced to kill all that I held dear,'' as if the creature were a kind of doppleganger sent to punish its creator for the crime of having defied the laws of nature by calling it into existence. The fact that by understanding those laws Victor has created a being not only more agile and enduring than mankind but also full of goodness is somehow lost sight of, and Victor's own self-loathing is allowed to drive the critics' supernatural interpretation of the events. It is even rare to find any admission that the creature is guilty of only two deliberate crimes: framing Justine and murdering Elizabeth. The creature's narrative is sufficient to account for every single detail of its behavior, and yet the idea that it is some sort of preternatural vampire stubbornly refuses to be displaced. It is time to accept the idea that Victor Frankenstein is deranged and that his life has not been ruined by science but rather by his own frenzy, obsessions, and impracticality.

Victor Frankenstein's creation had murdered members of his family and strangled to death his fiance on their wedding night fulfilling his threat to "be with you on your wedding night" and warned Victor, "You are my creator but I am your master." As Victor centered his life around creating the monster, he would later center it around hunting down and killing his creation. This manhunt would expend Victor's life and prove his efforts futile to catch an untouchable and nameless monster. This novel is full of enduring themes of ambition, friendship, and the conflict between the two, psychology, oppression and rebellion, the dangers of scientific and intellectual advancement, and societal injustice. The writing itself isn't great but it's the story and the themes that make this a great classic.Shelley wrote this book influenced by the period of time in which she lived, the Romantic Period. This was the response to the previous time, the Age of Enlightenment. In the Age of Enlightenment, reasoning was deemed of utmost importance and people thought that there were natural laws and that reason plus these natural laws would equal progress. By progress, they meant not only advancement, but unlimited advancement, that society would continue to move closer and closer to perfection. In Frankenstein, we see the result of so much logic and reason- the creation of a monster. In the story there seems to be no natural laws governing the world. When I think of what natural laws would govern the world, Justice comes to mind as the most important. Throughout this whole story, justice is so dearly lacking. Injustice leads to more injustice. The monster is born into unforgiving circumstances that were not his fault. His creator rejects him immediately. Throughout his life, the monster found himself rejected by everyone for the repulsive looks his creator gave him. The monster even suffered rejection of the impoverished family he ardently and sacrificially helped. When he saved a girl from drowning, her father shot him. The monster yearned desperately for a mate of his kind, which Victor denied him for fear the two would breed an entire race of fiends or that she, too would reject him and there would be two fiends. Decide this debate between the monster and Victor for yourself. Even if Victor was right to deny him a mate, it was still an injustice for the monster. After all, the monster could not help the disadvantages he was born into and he strove mightily to be virtuous. He exercised his will and responsibility strongly, but to no avail. The poor thing begs for just one friend and he is denied this. The innocent Justine (a play on the word "Justice") is executed for the monster's crime; the monster eventually slays several innocent people he doesn't even know. Injustice is what moves the plot of this book.Shelley's novel disputes the importance and promise of natural laws, reasoning, and the idea of progress. It introduces emotion and intuition. Frankenstein studied laboriously but failed because he left the monster emotionally neglected and rejected. When Victor first learns of the murder of an innocent member of his family, he intuitively knows it was the doing of the monster- he offers no reasoning or deduction as to how he knows. The monster hounds Victor and seems to supernatually know where he is at all times. One of the many interpretations of Frankenstein is that it was a product of the Romantic Period, which was a response to the Age of Enlightenment.

As always, cliff notes really help a student who needs a little boost. Two thumbs up.

This is for pie makers that want to try new flavors/ingredients/ideas in pie makingUnfortunately, I am an old dog pie maker that is uncomfortable with air brushing, weird new flavors, etc.

i love the flavor combinations and fresh ideas in "the new pie" - thumbing through always gets me ready to create something delicious. their pie crust really will change your life! (but i suggest starting with the fizzy root beer "float".)also, the thought down to every detail of the book design are inspired... recipes w both weight and volume measurements! a fully sourced equipment list with everything but a bar code! but i must say, having difficulty levels on the recipes is the best part bc i know what i'm getting myself into before i start lol.

I pre-ordered this book to give to my BIL for his birthday, thinking that he would enjoy some of the very cool pie projects presented in this book. Lots of the pie recipes are right up his alley as he loves so many of the flavor elements in these pies-- maple syrup, peanut butter, chocolate, cocktails. For sure you could go crazy and recreate some of these masterpiece pies, but there are also some simpler creations, and SO many practical tips and tricks to give you new ways to up your pie game! The photographs are out of this world, the writing is crisp and clear (and exciting!) Can't wait to see what my BIL does with the book, and might just need another copy for myself!

I have never baked a pie. Never. But this book with it's alluring pies like the "1651 Richmond" (Golden Girls inspired), the "Pittsburgh Proud" (add fries) and so, so many others, has made me determined to bake a pie. The book is complete with ratings for Ingredients (ease of finding), Equipment (Do I have this in my kitchen?), and Construction (ease of assembly). This book truly lives up to its name! I'm in love!

So excited about this book, it is beautiful and so well done, great photography and amazing recipes. Can’t wait to try them all!!

Disappointing....

I’ve only made one pie from this book so far (Caramel Popcorn), but I’ll definitely make more! The only drawback is that several recipes use the sous vide technique, and I don’t have that equipment.

These are easy to follow recipes and written in a way that instills confidence in even the most inexperienced baker. There are substitutions offered for hard to find ingredients, and some local anecdotes to bring the recipes home.

Fibromyalgia hurts. Arthritis hurts. I've been down every road for pain, that the doctors could give me and none of them worked. I am not one of the children of the 60s who took marijuana as a teen. So I curious as to whether cannabis would work for me or the oils. I tried to pick up a lot of books about it and about growing it for myself to see what needs to be done.I found myself between books one evening just before going to sleep and decided to listen to this book. I found it very interesting, very well done. I felt the author explained everything very well. He took you from the time of the seed through the different phases of growth and explained what the plant would need in each. It isn't often that I read a book of instruction using the text-to-speech but I found it worked out quite well for me this time. I'll keep this on hand as I need a reference guide.

Very informative! Much better than the guide from Sam Edward!

works great and does the job well, quick delivery and sevice.

Kids book

NO good

It's probably pretty good!

This is NOT a how to, this is general information summed up at best, if even. Worst book ever written for cannabis. For example humidity section is barely 2 paragraphs long, and it never gives you any info. other than to keep it in check, not too moist or dry, thats it. Maybe for a few bucks to get a general idea of things it would be ok.

From choosing the seeds to harvesting, the author gave some useful tips and step by step. I was hoping to see some pictures as well since this is a guide book. In spite of that, the book is straight to the point. No BS. Just a quick introduction and it went straight ahead to the planning and steps.

This story was written to honour the life of the author's young daughter who suffers from a life-threatening disease. Allende follows the family history through the turbulence of the military coup in Chile to their struggle to adapt to a new life in North America after their escape. The central character is Paula, her daughter, but each member of this eccentric family plays his or her part in this engrossing, emotionally charged story of love, loss, courage and fear. It a pean to the special love between a mother and daughter, and the triumph of the spirit. Compelling reading. Highly recommended.

An emotional, endearing and wonderful read! I enjoyed following Isabel Allende's path through the most painful experience a parent can have: the death of her 27 year old daughter of a terrible, unusual and strange genetic illness: porphyry. Her heartbreaking road takes her to tell the story of her family and her own in a humorous, entertaining and at time painful way. I read the book in Spanish, which is doubly rewarding as the richness of Allende's communications skills in her maternal language become outstanding following colloquial Chilean expressions that can be absolutely untranslatable funny. With "Paula" the reader will enjoy a taste of Chile's tragic history especially during the 60s and 70s, of the country's amazing geographical beauty, customs and the resilience and richness of the people. I loved it!

We read this for a book club. I admit I struggled to get through the first 100 pages. It seemed very scatterbrained and jumped around a lot, probably just like how she was feeling while writing it. But it does redeem itself as you get farther along. Her writing is very good and she starts to focus more on events in more length. I have heard her other books are amazing and this one is just a little different being a memoir.

This book will make you feel you belong in Isabel's own family. You will laugh, cry, feel joy, and never want the book to end. At least all of this happened to me. I have read various Allende books (she is my favorite author btw) and this might be my favorite book of hers. It's a tough statement to make because all of her books are incredible and so rich with detail and always contain strong and interesting characters; but this particular book was very emotional and felt extremely personal and for that it made me love it even more. Once you read this I strongly urge you to read The Sum Of Our Days. I think the two should be read close together to get the full impact of this time in Isabel's life.

A writer who can make you laugh, smile, and cry in the same chapter is indeed a writer to be cherished. Such is the case with Allende's Paula. As a mother, I suffered with Allende's description of her struggle to keep her comatose daughter alive, yet amid the tragedy she could digress and recall earlier periods of laughter and funny irony. Even in the midst of the anguish of trying to find a way to communicate with her inert daughter, she found comic relief in the drama of the lives of other patients in the hospital. The author provides compelling stories of her early childhood, great loves, and introduces a parade of interesting characters. All these are gently interwoven with a description of historical events and political turmoil in Chile creating a provocative glimpse of an era which I suspect most US readers were probably unaware. A tender and sensitive description of loss, tragedy, and of finding peace, Paula is indeed one of my more revered reads for this year.

I loved this novel because of the way Isabel Allende used to communicate with her dying daughter. It made me think in the way mothers try to console their kids when they are sick. Most of the time we try to entertain them to keep them away from their pains. She does something similar telling her all her past. Even though Paula cannot hear, she continues talking and talking about their past. Isabel Allende is a great story teller, she transport you in space and in the journey you cannot avoid laughing or crying. I like her as a writer, she opens her heart and invites you to participate in the story. I also admire her because most of her novels are based on true stories and many of them. are personal stories. She is not afraid to be judged or criticized.

I am a huge fan of Allende’s writing had read several other of books before this one. “Paula” is a powerful, achingly honest account of a mother struggling to deal with her daughter’s living death. As Isabel chronicles her own life to try and hold onto sanity while keeping vigil, she gives her readers great insight into her novels.

A well written book about God's plan of the ages to purge and ultimately save all people. I was disappointed that the author apparently doesn't believe in the Incarnation and the Resurrection or even the divinity of Christ and declares that nobody had to pay the sin debt and God could simply have forgiven all. Christians would strongly disagree since it is Christ who makes it possible for mankind to come to God, and it is the Holy Spirit who brings us to Christ and keeps us in the faith. All of scripture speaks of Christ. He is present in every book of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. He is God in the flesh. Without Him the Bible is just another book. Without Christ there is no gospel.

As nearly all "Christians" who have gone from a strictly Bible based, traditionally moral belief system to the revelation of All Well Be Eventually Well, this author leaves moral, biblical roots to morph his Hope of Universal Redemption into a "God's good with all manner of lifestyles" theology. Not a scholarly look into the idea (Universal Redemption); just a "I no longer believe inconvenient passages of the Bible anymore," statement here and there, as though that somehow ought to satisfy the reader.

If Grace is True is thorough and intimate explanation of Universalism and a God that truly is about grace. For "traditional "Christians, this will challenge many of your long held beliefs, but read it. It is mentally healthy to view other beliefs and examine your own. Gulley is in no way intimidating or dogmatic, rather his writing is filled with the grace he writes about.

This book is having a great impact on my life. I truly believe God loves each of his children and will see them home. I no longer feel burdened to pray and witness to the "unsaved". I read every word Pastor Gulley has written, over and over.

This book makes the most sense if you truly have forgiveness in your heart. I forgive because I am forgiven! These words ring true....God will save everyone. I am a believer. This book can change your life if you'll let it. Read this book prayerfully. The authors use scripture to back up everything. Very eye opening.I give this book of love 5 stars!

I found this book very interesting. I’ve often felt that much of American Christianity limits the grace of God. This is an easy read and I found it well worth the time.

I wasn't going to read this, but a well-meaning friend urged me so strongly that I decided to give it a try. The better parts of the book are in the first 3 chapters. I appreciate the authors' arguments that the idea of Hell as we've been traditionally taught puts considerable limitations on the Love and Grace of God. If our determination as little human beings to resist God is stronger than His divine ability to draw us with his Love and Grace, his love and grace are not all that amazing. If God has picked and chosen who he will share this Love and Grace with and some aren't chosen, then His Love and Grace are not that amazing either. However their logic breaks down seriously in the last 2 chapters of the book. Jesus' divinity is dismissed, along with any serious consideration of Bible passages they find difficult. While I'm open to new takes on old ideas, I can't buy such fruity ideas based solely on the sentiments of the authors, it seems.I think I'll read the Thomas Talbot book others have recommended and see what I think. I'm certainly willing to be convinced that God is bigger and more powerful and more loving than the traditional Church makes him look. I appreciate these authors' hearts to try and relieve people of religious burdens rather than saddle people with them; however I can't take seriously such weak and unsupported arguments even for an idea I hope is true.

This book brought to light things I have been pondering and questioning about for some time. It is more in alignment with my idea of an all loving Father God.
