How can a book go from great to terrible so quickly? Rita's story starts out inspirationally, a divorced housewife starting life anew in a small Zapotec village. Rita continues to visit Honduras, Guetemala, and Nicaragua, all during a time of political strife and US interventions. It continues, the reader fascinated, as Rita manages to get a place to stay in Borneo with a famous anthropologist. Then she arrives in Bali, where she stays for many years. The soliloquies are weaker here, the story less detailed, and certainly less interesting. Suddenly, Rita, an exciting journeyer, starts to lose her charm. The story in Bali isn't fleshed out enough to make it come alive. It is difficult to read as Rita goes from intrepid traveller to an overweight senior. As a lifelong exerciser, it was hard for me to sympathise with Rita's admitted difficulties in training for the trek. She writes that she simply couldn't motivate herself.I found myself skipping pages and speed-reading, vainly hoping that the book was going to get good again. It didn't.
Right after my divorce was final, I read "Tales of a Female Nomad". I had been married for 38 years and was looking for a way to reinvent my life.Rita's book helped me to get the courage to do new things that I ordinarily wouldn't do. Although I did travel to some new places, my risk taking was not just limited to travel. I had a new attitude. I thought to myself, "If Rita can do this, so can Iâ€.Rita's book helped me change my perception of being a lonely divorced woman, to embracing exciting new things. The things I liked the most about Rita's book were her sincerity, her ability and her goal of connecting to people. I also loved her courage and trust of people.Thank you Rita!
This book inspired me to set off on my own journey and like Rita, my adventure lasted years. Over those years I loaned this book out many, many times and eventually it never came back to me. I was glad to purchase a new copy now that I'm settled down in the States again. The store gets a little slow in the last chapter about the author's time southeast Asia (in Bali if I remember right), but in a way that makes sense since that's where her own adventure settled down for some time. Enjoy that section for the gorgeous descriptions of the food. Enjoy the rest of the book for the sense of adventure and an openness to new experience that might set you off on your own travels.
Rita is my idol. I know I am not brave enough (and now physically unable) to travel and experience the world in Rita's manner. She writes that at parties it is women who are most interested in her adventures. I enjoyed the well-written descriptions of the places, ceremonies, and foods in the book. More revealing about the author and the world were the descriptions of human nature, trust, and relationships. Brava Rita!
I really enjoyed this woman's courage in living her own life by traveling to faraway places and authentically engaging with people. She felt the fear and did it anyway. She experienced anxiety, loneliness, discomfort, judgement and doubt, but she did it anyway. She opened herself up and dove right in, experiencing joy, serenity, affection, communion, deep engagement and laughter with others in a non-traditional way. She questioned her beliefs, reinvented her way of living and thrived. So many of us live somewhat pedestrian lives, preoccupied with security and stability; she did not and I was moved and inspired by her traveling tales, purposeful, deliberate connections with " others", and frequent keen insights. It was refreshing.
This author was DELIGHTFUL in how she relayed her tales of travel. She has a mastery of language without sounding the least bit dry or academic. Her travels were immensely interesting and entertaining. She frankly described her difficulties and challenges without denigrating the locals, which was heart-warming without being saccharin. I've given this book as gifts and have always received the sincerest thanks for it.
Not Pulitzer material but I liked how she evolved and the challenges she embraced as she matured in her new role as a nomad. There are a lot of people that don't understand the call to wander and Rita describes it well.
One of my favorite books on earth. Told in first person, present tense, Gelman reveals her international explorations, from her first awkward foray into Mexico to the years she spent living in faraway locales, from New Zealand to Papua New Guinea to Asia. Her insight, curiosity, kindness, and honesty come through in spades. A keeper.
Very enjoyable read; the author clearly loves her nomadic lifestyle, and is a very talented writer. I find most nonfiction books lose steam toward the end, and this is no exception (though, honestly, that could easily be more of a flaw in me than with any of the authors). This book follows the author as she travels the world and immerses herself in a number of different cultures, and learns how to relax, trust herself and others, and shed some of her western modesty. It is well written and I can relate to the desire to go everywhere and do everything. There is nothing at all wrong with the book, but it is not entirely perfect either. It doesn't have to be; it was an enjoyable read, and sparked (even more of) my wanderlust.
