This book is recommended as a first-read following a betrayal and as a go-to when feeling stuck in the recovery process. It is organized into three sections. In Part One, the author has a hopeful tone and conveys her understanding of the deep pain of experiencing betrayal, both in how it alters how one views themselves and changes the world in which they live. This section normalizes the feelings that come with betrayals of all sorts, and inserts hope for restoration of trust. She opens up about her own personal experience of recovering from betray with her husband, which can provide a sort of validation about her recommendations that therapists cannot (because we are trained not to self-disclose).One of the most helpful takeaways early on is the concept that once there has been a hope or an expectation of recovery established, many couples may set an unreasonably high expectations for perfect behavior. The author warns appropriately that due to relationships involving two imperfect people, there are going to be setbacks and mistakes from both partners. There is also a good description of the helpless/angry and under-attack/defensive dynamic that prevents couples from healing. Finally, there is a focus on the difference between safety and trust, which may be something many have never considered before. (c5)A key concept is that “you can only regain trust if you let go of some of your need for safety,” meaning there is a need to tolerate vulnerability to built trust. It explains how the more one partner does to feel safe, the more it makes the other partner feel unsafe (as in, withdrawing to feel safe causes your partner to feel insecure about your love for him/her).Part Two is focused on how to restore trust. It starts with a great description of the trust-betrayal-anxiety-unreliable emotional path that keeps many couples stuck (p103). It then covers Six Questions and asserts that knowing the answers to these questions makes all the differences in whether trust can be rebuilt (p105). There is then a chapter to address each of the six questions.A frequent question I receive is how long will/should the anger and healing process last; this is addressed in a helpful section beginning on p.126. The accusation/defense trap (p150) is also a common pattern I witness, and using the described way of expressing/listening is key to recovery.Part Three is about restoring trust in other situations, such as when one partner is unreliable, when there are power imbalances, and when the couple has significant differences in expectations. A chapter is devoted to how to navigate having differences in openness and honesty, which can trap couples in a cycle of suspicion and withdrawal. There is also powerful information about why people who have been hurt or lied to in the past tend to find themselves in dishonest/untrusting relationships.IN SUM: Not only is this a helpful first book to read following betrayal, it would also be helpful later down the road when feeling ‘stuck’ in the recovery process. I think the hurt partner who is in shock and feeling crazy with grief will find the normalizing, casual tone soothing and comforting. The person who has been trying for months to recover from the pain will find it helpful in offering a different way to think about things, and an action plan for the areas of stuck-ness. The partner who feels sincerely regretful about what they did--and who wants desperately to help the one they love--will find it useful to see that there is a path out of the pain, the blame/defend cycle, and the shame/remorse they feel. It is both realistic and hopeful, which is a good balance for a book of this topic.

I am half way through the book, and it has helped me so much during the most difficult time in my life. It has helped me understand what I am feeling and why I am better than my marriage counselor did. (Needless to say I fired him). If you are going through a major betrayal rather it be from getting cheated on, your loved one gambled away everything, or is hiding money. Or anything in between this book will help you. It will even give you the questions you need to ask yourself if the relationship is worth saving, And that was a big one for me, I feel like the more I read this book the easier it has been for me to heal.

Some of this was a little hard to agree with. Seems a little superficial and doesn't hit the root of mistrust.

Read all the single star reviews before purchasing this book!!! If you're dealing with any kind of sexual betrayal, skip this book! There are multiple potentially triggering instances throughout. I agree with the other 1 star reviewers saying the auther is blaming the spouse, excusing bad behavior from the betrayer etc. Those reviewers offer specific examples of some instances in the book that are some of the instances that bothered me as well. I wasn't far in when I was already unhappy that I was reading/ listening to this book. I continued reading upon my husband's request, after he had read it and asked me to. I had to take multiple breaks after being seriously triggered, and was waiting for the real advice and suggestions for helpful steps to rebuild trust, other than to say "don't lie anymore" which she states as if it were a revelation. Then, I came across this example she offers regarding how to respond to your spouse so that they will trust you enough to share..."If this woman wants to have a vibrant, open, and exciting sex life with her husband, then if Bozo says to his wife that he wonders if she’s open to trying a threesome, she’d better not throw the baby out with the bathwater. Otherwise he won’t share any of his adventurous ideas in the future. What she needs to say is something like, “I’m so glad you shared that with me. [Remember: welcoming a suggestion is very different from agreeing to it.] I love it that you feel comfortable enough to take a risk and share some adventurous ideas with me. As for this particular idea, I have to say that it’s just not for me. But I hope you’ll keep bringing fresh ideas to me. The more, the better.”I wish someone had been here to witness my eye roll of a lifetime, and to hear the swearing that came out of my mouth. Both of these things are uncharacteristic for me, but they were my sincere reaction. This is a clear case of the author not knowing, caring about, or grasping what the majority of her audience has experienced and are trying to heal from. She acknowledges multiple times that many spouses have come to this book in the hopes that they can trust again after infidelity. This and other examples she uses were poorly chosen, potentially triggering, and her solutions for dealing with them were excusing of bad... no, terrible behavior! She continually attempts to put ownership on the innocent spouse and minimizes the severity and seriously damaging affects of the betrayals. One last gripe I have-She doesn't really cover dealing with multiple betrayals. I kept expecting her to, but she continued to give example after example of spouse's who make one bad choice and that's it. I think that's often not the case and rebuilding trust becomes more complicated the more it's been broken. Overall, I wish I hadn't bothered with this book. After talking to my husband he admits to skimming it, which is how he reads, as I am much more thorough. There were a few things he took away from it like the "don't lie anymore" concept, and that the betrayed spouse needs to feel understood. I'll be continuing my search for better books on this subject.

I bought this book for both my fiancé and I. We are into self-help books to help our relationship grow strong and heal. This book I thought would help us but instead it gave us a bad vibe once we got into the second chapter. This therapist has some issues. She’s jaded. I won’t allow her “advice” to come in between what me and my fiancé have so far built together. There’s better books out there. We did not like it.

I love this book! She is so informative and helpful. I actually highlighted and re read parts of the book. I wish I could meet her. The book reads like you're taking to the author.

Spot on for where I am and have been for some time, covers many many scenarios and absolutely challenges the reader to step out of their painful position and examine it from all angles, even when you really really REALLY don't want to. I've listened to it via my Kindle several times through and keep revisiting it.

Good book to spur some needed conversations in our marriage. Helpful to understand where we are and where we can do better.

Copyright laws are a very tricky mine field for those who lack the knowledge of how to navigate them. And, worse yet, let's say you create a product and use what you think is something royality free and you don't know the trip wire for the copyright minefield is there waiting for you to step on it. Suddenly, BOOM! you discover you have a serious legal problem on your hands. Jeanne Mayeux has the experience to navigate the copyright minefield; and, has shared a wealth of insight in this book on how to avoid the often tricky area of the copyright world. This book provides current insight into this field; and, if used, will prepare you to successfully navigate the minefield. For anyone involved with product creation, this book is a must read!

There is good information in this book. However, it's in real need of a good copy editor. Sometimes incomplete sentences and typos forced me to reread to figure out what was intended. In the history section, author calls the date 1710 the 16th century. And then as no quotes are used, it's not clear where a cite from the Constitution ends and the author's comments begin. It says Eisenhower signed the 1947 law, but he wasn't President in 1947. Truman was.One hopes other facts are more reliable.

Very helpful for authors, publishers, and content developers.Answers questions you didn't know you had.Jeanne Mayeux is an authority on her topic.

#468,412 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

First book read by this author... It won't be the last. Oh, how I adore a scientific mind eloquently expressed via playful perceptions of interconnectedness. It's obviously not all fiction, and that's what I love most about this. I found myself learning about things I'd never thought about directly whilst enjoying his writing style that partially reads like a diary. Kind of reminds me how I always grew frustrated with my teachers who seemed to teach out of obligation rather than out of passion... This guy, wow. He'd be the most epic professor. You can feel how enthralled he is. And through that loud fascination, I'm now a lot more engrossed in transhumanism not just as a technological advancement, but a collective upgrade of tools as well. Love this. Absolutely love this.

In his book Natural Born Cyborgs, Andy Clark supports a view of human-machine symbiosis that puts our recent integration with computer interfaces on a continuum of human evolutionary development along with "clothes, cooking, bricklaying, and writing." Through his writing the author makes the case to support this view in which he systematically lays out a foundation for readers to see things from his perspective. Overall the book is written very well. I would recommend it to anyone with an open mind, some background in technology/neuroscience and a general interest in thinking about how we, in effect, have developed as human beings throughout the course of history. After first introducing the book by playing off of our fear of the fictional cyborgs we all know from the movies ie Terminator, Eve 8, Cable - the book begins with a brief introduction of the author's background; Andy Clark claims that it was during his time directing a new interdisciplinary program in philosophy, neuroscience, and psychology that he first realized this concept of "cyborg" that he details in this book. From here he introduces the idea of humans being intrinsically technology dependent beings. He states that his goal in writing such a book is "to hijack that image (our preconceived notion of cyborg) and to reshape it, revealing it as a disguised vision of our own biological nature." What really impressed me about his style of argument and writing was his use of examples from research in many different fields to illustrate his point. Where many times we see arguments like his fall into ambiguity and opinion, his use of concrete examples helps paint the picture of the story he tells. The book itself is very short, consisting of only 8 chapters, however every chapter has been thoroughly annotated so readers can dive deeper if they wish. For the sake of my synopsis I've divided the book into two halves.Chapters 1-3The first chapter of the book is spent educating the reader on where the term cyborg originally came from putting it in the context of the first early technologies which "sought to incorporate exogenous components extending the self-regulating control function of the organism in order to adapt it to new environments" Here Clark cites early osmotic pumps, auditory prosthetics, and peripheral nerve interfaces. The focus of this chapter is to draw out what Clark calls "an ancient western prejudice" which creates the illusionary belief that the mind is distinctly different from the rest of natural order. Instead of viewing technology as something distinct from our human nature he argues that technology is integrated and always has been integrated with our nature placing us in our current condition at a transition point between first wave (pen, paper, diagram, and digital media) and second wave (personalized, online, dynamic biotechnological unions) technologies. The cell phone is the technology he uses as an example of this transition.Moving from the concrete into more abstract realms Andy Clark then introduces the idea of transparent and opaque technologies before diving into his categorization of technologies, which he labels "ready-to-hand" and "present-at-hand." In categorizing the way people perceive and interact with technologies Clark attempts to bring some level of awareness to how we as lay people may simply generalize and interact with technologies and our environment taking what we have right in front of us for granted. The importance of understanding concepts such as these are again driven home using experimental example - in this case the ability of chimps who are trained to reason symbolically vs chimps who are not. Andy uses this example to make his point that only the chimps who were trained to reason symbolically were then able to understand higher order relationships - what he calls the relation between relations.Chapters 4-8Once laying out this abstract scaffold for his argument Andy Clark gets into his answers to bigger questions: Where are we? and What are we?. Here he takes the reader through reported experiments and experiences, which alter human perception through illusions and the use of technology based telepresence to play with the idea of embodied consciousness. From here he explores the application and ethics of such technologies for the future of mankind. Andy Clark takes a look at how this knowledge is already currently being used through computational application dipping into the darker areas of misuse of such information/technology. He ends this section making the point that it is not technology itself that is evil; it's how the technology is used. In conclusion Andy Clark argues that it's not the preconceived invasive and material tools themselves that make us cyborgs rather it's the extended thinking systems that are created as a result of these tools that make us who we are.I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I especially liked the importance he gives to interdisciplinary perspectives. Through the experience of working on constructing an interdisciplinary research program at Georgia Tech under Dr. Steve Potter I came to notice and support many of the ideas presented here. What impressed me most about the book was the amazing job the author does in translating ideas to the reader through examples while at the same time demonstrating the concept in the structure of his writing. For example in introducing the idea of the symbolically reasoning chimps he is setting up the scaffold to introduce his concept of scaffolded thinking. The biggest problem I can see readers having with this book is what can appear as Andy Clark's loose use of what he defines as a technology. Because he is speaking of technology in both a physical and metaphysical sense I can see many readers having a hard time accepting the case that he makes if they do not consider what he has to say carefully. If the reader does buy into Clark's definition, this book is an amazing source of perspective on how we as human beings have grown in an interlocked web of biology and technology. In my opinion what Andy Clark talks about in this book has incredible application in models of education and perspective regardless of opinion on the monistic, dualist, or pluralist nature of the world.

Clark presents an argument that we do not need to implant microchips or electronic prostheses in our body to become Cyborgs, - We are already Cyborgs. The argument is based in our natural ability to use tools and technics to enhance our capabilities for movement, cognition and perception. The book is easy to read and draws upon research from the fields of robotics, cognitive science, neuroscience, cybernetics, dynamic systems theory, feminist theory, cognitive anthropology and english litterature studies. The fact that he draws upon such diverse fields of research does not reduce the logic or persuasiveness of his arguments, but rather show the interdisciplinary basis for the book. The breadth of the arguments' basis is a major plus with this book, showing that the interplay between humans and technology are not merely technical but also something which changes who we are and how we understand our selves.

Clark is new and inventive in his theories on the natural born cyborg. Since we all use technology so smoothly and since it is integrated into our lives to such an extent, we are all cyborgs in one fashion or another. This book is excellent and will have you questioning who you really are. Clark provides creative and easy to understand illustrations to help the reader further understand his points.

Errors, Blunders, and Lies: How to Tell the Difference (ASA-CRC Series on Statistical Reasoning in Science and Society)

Review

"…so compelling that I read it in one sitting." –Ann Cannon, Cornell College "Salsburg covers a wide range of subtle issues in statistical modelling, made easily digestible through a delightful collection of historical stories. These show the true power of statistics: from determining the risks of heart attacks for the inhabitants of Framingham, to checking how many books were written by Davy Crockett." –David Spiegelhalter, University of Cambridge  "This is a delightful read that takes us through a gentle tour of statistical concepts in non-technical language. Readers with prior exposure will enjoy the lively historical context that is usually not provided in other introductions. Dr. Salsburg offers a broad audience an accessible way to understand the most important topics in statistics."–Jeff Gill, Washington University "Salsburg's book, Errors, Blunders and Lies: How to Tell the Difference, is a timely examination of how statistics and statistical modeling has assisted humankind in better understanding the world about us, whether the context is in, for example, the physical sciences, medicine and health, politics, or environmental science. The author clearly explains important statistical procedures, but does so while providing an historical overview of the role that statistics has taken in minimizing errors in testing and thinking in general. This book is a pleasure to read, but difficult to put down once started." –Joseph M. Hilbe, President, International Astrostatistics Association "Exceptionally informative, inherently fascinating, thoughtful and thought-provoking, Errors, Blunders, and Lies: How to Tell the Difference is a unique and extraordinary read from beginning to end. Remarkably well written and thoroughly 'reader friendly' in organization and presentation, Errors, Blunders, and Lies is an especially recommended addition to both community and academic library Statistics & Statistical Interpretation collections and supplemental studies reading lists. It should be noted: for students and non-specialist general readers with an interest in the subject, that Errors, Blunders, and Lies is also available in a paperback edition."–Michah Andrew, Michah's Bookshelf "Author Salsburg has written an easily accessible book that both novices and experts will find difficult to put down. Salsburg uses a collection of historical anecdotes to exemplify some of the fundamental ideas of statistical modeling. Throughout the book, Salsburg returns to the basic model that “Observation = Truth + Error.” Each of the 17 short chapters (which average around seven pages) use an authentic episode to elucidate the idea of a measurement error, a procedural blunder, or the falsification of data. The reader will find examinations of the length of kings’ reigns, the number of books written by Davy Crockett, modeling the risk of heart attacks, falsification of data, estimating the number of Rommel’s tanks, and many other scenarios. A very small amount of mathematics is included, which is not necessary for the reader to follow in order to understand the presented ideas. All chapters conclude with a short summary and a list of references. This work is a follow-up to Salsburg’s The Lady Tasting Tea (CH, Oct'01, 39-0991). Interested readers will also appreciate the somewhat similar book by Stephen Stigler, The Seven Pillars of Statistical Wisdom (CH, Sep'16, 54-0237)."~R. L. Pour, CHOICE, Emory and Henry College

About the Author

David Salsburg is the author of The Lady Tasting Tea: How Statistics Revolutionized Science in the Twentieth Century, a popular science book he wrote in retirement. It has appeared in hardcover and paperback, in Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and Portuguese editions. The paperback version is now in its eleventh printing. Since retiring in 1995, Salsburg has also taught at the Harvard School of Public Health and currently teaches one course a year at Yale University. He continues to publish academic articles. Salsburg was the first statistician hired by Pfizer Central Research, Pfizer Inc. in 1968. During his years at Pfizer, he worked on 15 successful products and hundreds of unsuccessful ones, and rose to the top of the company’s scientific ladder. Salsburg occasionally taught courses at the University of Connecticut and at Connecticut College. His publication record includes more than 50 articles in refereed journals and three academic books. He was honored by being named a Fellow of the American Statistical Association, given a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Pharmaceutical Manufacturing and Research Association, and declared an outstanding alumnus from the University of Connecticut. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with honors in 1952, and served as an officer in the U.S. Navy 1952-1955. In the five years after serving in the Navy, he tried his hand at business. Salsburg married his wife, Fran, in 1959 and, with her encouragement, went back to school for graduate studies. He received a Master of Science in mathematics from Trinity College, Hartford, and a PhD in mathematical statistics from the University of Connecticut in 1966. Degree in hand, he accepted a position as an assistant professor in the Statistics and Operations Research Department of the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.

I very-much enjoyed Salsburg's "The Lady Tasting Tea", but found this "sequel" disappointing. "The Lady Tasting Tea" introduced statistical concepts through entertaining stories, but the current effort feels a bit formulaic -- a bit forced. It lacks the charm of its predecessor. This may be a biased perspective -- "The Lady Tasting Tea" was among the motivating factors that led me to go back to school and acquire a graduate degree and career in statistics, so I am viewing this book with a very different -- and perhaps jaded -- set of eyes. Your mileage may vary. I will say that Paul Ross's review is perhaps overly critical -- yes there are areas like principal components analysis and factor analysis (and my favorite, generalized additive modeling) which this book could have delved into, but choices must be made in selection of topics for a general audience, and I'm not going to criticize Salsburg for leaving some things out.

David Spiegelhalter's cover quote says it best, but I will add that David Salsburg employs interesting examples, analogies, and stories to effectively convey statistical concepts. Very enjoyable!

It is an interesting book laying down concepts in a very clear way. But specially after reading "A lady tasting tea", by the same author, one feels it a bit shallow, maybe as an attempt to make the contents more accessible. I would still recommend this book, as a general peek into statistical thinking.

I recommend this book for anyone studying statistical analysis.

Interesting but not as captivating as The lady Tasting Tea

Review of Salsburg's "Errors, blunders, and lies" by Paul F. Ross David Salsburg is a mathematical statistician having worked on real world problems at Pfizer Inc. after earning a PhD in mathematical statistics at the University of Pennsylvania. He retired from Pfizer in 1995. During his pre-retirement and post-retirement careers, he taught at University of Connecticut, Connecticut College, Harvard University, Yale University, University of Pennsylvania, Rhode Island _____________________________________________________________________________________Salsburg, David S. "Errors, blunders, and lies :: How to tell the difference" 2017, CRC Press, Boca Raton FL, xiii + 154 pages_____________________________________________________________________________________College, and Trinity College. He is the author of several books. His Wikipedia entry announces the expected publication in 2017 of the book reviewed here. Born in 1931, Wikipedia does not tell us when he completed his PhD. In Errors, blunders, and lies (2017), Salsburg adopts a statistician's approach to understanding errors. He opens his argument with the statement that every serious student of statistics and measurement accepts ... observation = truth + error... meaning that any observation, no matter how carefully made, is appropriately understood to intend to describe accurately what was observed but also risks, and often contains, some error of observation, some error of measurement. Statistics accepts as its challenge understanding those errors and separating truth from error to the degree that is possible. Many statisticians would say that statistics is the discipline that seeks to improve decision making in the presence of uncertainty. Salsburg introduces the Poison statistical distribution of errors (Chapter 2), the notion (described by multiple regression) that several circumstances may more than occasionally be associated with an outcome of importance (Chapters 3, 4, and 5), the settings in which the statistician seeks to forecast a probability that must fall between 0 and 1 (log-odds, Chapter 6), the idea of causation (Chapter 7), the change in demands upon the statistician when data describe a few characteristics (p = 7) about many people (N = 1,000) to the era of Big Data in which data describe few people (N = 100) and many pieces of information (p = 500,000 genes). Salsburg then turns to "blunders" (Chapters 9 through 12) in which data are missing and must be supplied or data do not conform to one's expectations. If the distribution of errors is not "normal," what does one do? Will the statistical tests assuming normality continue to provide correct conclusions when the assumptions are not met (are the tests robust?)? Salsburg says "no." Finally Salsburg (Chapters 13 – 17) examines circumstances in which reports appear to have been falsified. He chooses instances from Roman history and the Old Testament. He considers censuses in which the census taker, armed with a questionnaire, knocks on door after door and interviews those at home, recording their answers. Toward the end of a long day's work, the census taker may want to sit down in a quiet place and provide false answers for a whole stack of questionnaires, thereby saving much door knocking and interview time. The practice is called "curbstoning" and Salsburg asks how curbstoned data can be detected. Scientists themselves have not been immune to the temptation to falsify data. He also asks whether a book, attributed to Davy Crockett, was written by Davy Crockett. Salsburg makes some huge errors. (1) A major purpose of science is to develop the simplest possible explanation for an observed outcome, an explanation other scientists can reproduce. Multiple regression helps toward that end. However, like other mathematical statisticians, Salsburg entirely overlooks principal component analysis and rotation to simple structure as a means for understanding a correlation matrix. Factor analysis was invented by Charles Spearman, a psychologist, in 1903 and has been extended by the work of others through at least 1970 (Nunnally and Bernstein, 1994). Mathematical statisticians seem unable to see the usefulness of factor analysis, Salsburg and others (e.g., see Neter et al, 1996) providing further examples of the intellectual silos in which too much scientific thought is trapped. (2) Salsburg honors the notion that the number of variables studied must be minimized when this, in fact, is sure to limit the scientist's insight into the many influences affecting an outcome and the respective weight of their affiliation with that outcome. (3) Salsburg borrows five definitions of causation from science and philosophy and decides there is no satisfactory definition of causation. That's utter nonsense. When the light switch on the wall is moved, the light comes on. The movement of the switch is the cause of the initiation of light. Newton studied the correlation of planet orbit parameters, and probably also the rise and fall of tides, and named the "causes" (the forces guiding the observed behavior) of what he was observing "gravity" and "velocity." Correlated events can, in fact, produce descriptions leading to identifying and understanding causation. Yet statisticians spend much time teaching their students that "correlation is not causation" (which is true) to the point where studying multivariate correlations as a method for identifying causation is almost dropped from the scientist's choice of reasonable methods. (4) This work fails to provide the general reader an up-to-date overview of statistical thinking. Salsburg presents what is currently known as a frequentist view of statistical science, omitting the Bayesian and bootstrap perspectives and the challenges in addressing uncertainty that these schools of statistics address (Lin et al, 2014). (5) Salsburg links statistical thought to some of its historical roots (Laplace, Fisher, Tukey) but largely fails to give the reader a sense of the history of statistics and the growth of its thought or a means to explore that history (Stigler, 1986). These errors are so large that this work by Salsburg deserves to disappear into the ash heap of useless cogitations. Salsburg has made an ever-so-right choice in deciding that a book about statistics that introduces the general reader to statistical disciplines and their history and importance is both useful and necessary. But with that vision goes the responsibility for seeing all that is relevant to the discipline and seeing the discipline as an outsider would see it. Salsburg's view is both wrong in important places and very incomplete. Having read Salsburg's book, I must conclude that it does not merit a place on anyone's reading list or library shelf.Bellevue, Washington20 June 2017Copyright © 2017 by Paul F.
