This book seems to be written as a way to convince people to hire Ms. Kittross to run their private foundations. She is very down on running one's foundation on one's own, complaining that laws are so difficult to understand and remember, and how much of a pain it is to have to pay attention to one's foundation. There are better books to read that give you the same and better information. "Creating a Private Foundation" by Roger D. Silk is much better and gives a more complete idea of how to create something like a foundation.

Ms. Kittross has written an excellent primer on a wide array of important considerations for those of us interested in personal philanthropy. She transcends the the problem found within too many general management books - the tendency to rely on platitudes and "keen insights into the obvious." The book is filled with important details and clear instructions. I especially appreciated the attention to some of the psychological aspects of giving, including the need for an honest and reflective process of what I, the possible philanthropist, have as my core motivations and expectations.

This book contains almost nothing regarding how to set up and manage a foundation, despite the title. The book mainly deals with how to give away your assets. Very disappointing. I want my money back.

I'm a financial advisor and I must admit that I didn't know about all the other factors that can enter into being a successful (and happy) philanthropist. I've just finished it--the first time--and am now beginning to read it again. There's a lot of 'meat' in here. Well written.

Great insight.

Small book backed with good information.

I’ve worked in the field for over 40 years, and this is one of the most impressive books on foundation philanthropy I’ve seen. And it is one of the shortest. Julia Kittross has managed to cover a wide array of very pertinent issues in an easily accessible way that will be invaluable to anyone considering the creation of a private foundation. She first presents the alternatives to this approach and urges the reader to think hard before deciding on the foundation route. Then she introduces the extensive set of issues that one will face if this route is chosen. Throughout the book the author raises the questions that need to be answered and provides numerous possible responses that might be considered, but she continually emphasizes that there is no single right way to decide. Instead a central theme of the book is that each philanthropist must examine his or her own values and personality, and this will create the filter for answering the policy and operational issues that will ensue.Despite its brevity and the author’s insistence that at some points professional advice is essential, the book nevertheless provides in its light-handed manner an enormous amount of solid information about legal, policy and administrative issues. And she references a large number of sources that can provide more in-depth information about specific matters. She acknowledges that there is controversy in the field over the answers to some foundation questions, and her broadminded presentation is more useful to a neophyte philanthropist than an attempted indoctrination into a particular viewpoint.Among those who would most benefit from reading this book are: 1) those entertaining the idea of starting some kind of philanthropic practice – they would be much better prepared for consultation with professional advisers and guided in their next steps; 2) Professional advisers – first, it might broaden their knowledge and, secondly, they might be prompted to encourage their clients to read the book; 3) Foundation officers – it would be a good refresher on the general field and a reminder that there are many worthwhile approaches for a foundation.Charles S. RooksExecutive Director, Meyer Memorial Trust, Portland, OR, 1982-2002Vice President, Council on Foundations, Washington, DC, 1989-1982Executive Director, Southeastern Council of Foundations, Atlanta, GA, 1972-1978Board Member, Miller Foundation, Portland, OR - currently

This is an indispensible book for people who have the resources and inclination to give money away. As author Julia Kittross makes clear, it is easy to stumble out of the gate when acting on generous impulses. Kittross, a Seattle-based philanthropy consultant who has worked with all manner of foundations, charities, and grant-makers, knows the forces that can divide and otherwise undermine families and individuals as they try to meet their philanthropic goals. In fact, Kittross explains that that one of the risks of philanthropy is moving ahead without explicitly stated goals and identified outcomes. Among other pitfalls: working with families (don’t expect a family foundation to make your children get along better) and “self-dealing” schemes such as renting out your garage to your family foundation.Kittross is a warm and engaging writer, and her book addresses the basics of legal and tax responsibilities as well as the different types of giving mechanisms available. She reveals the range of important decisions that all philanthropists must make—from the sweeping ones such as whether to give locally or globally to such details as to hire staff and how to keep your organization’s books. And just in case it all seems too daunting, she offers a chapter on “Fun and Easy Giving Strategies.”Philanthropy won’t always be fun and easy. But with this book, you can make it rational, rewarding, and truly meaningful.

“Common sense is not always common, especially when it comes to managing your money. Consider Jill Schlesinger’s book your guide to all the things you should know about money but were never taught. After reading it, you’ll be smarter, wiser, and maybe even wealthier.”—Chris Guillebeau, author of Side Hustle and The $100 Startup “A must-read, whether you’re digging yourself out of a financial hole or stacking up savings for the future, The Dumb Things Smart People Do with Their Money is a personal finance gold mine loaded with smart financial nuggets delivered in Schlesinger’s straight-talking, judgment-free style. I know I did. Drawing on a highly accomplished career—not just as an astute observer of personal finance but also as a planner and options trader—she arms readers with knowledge and tools to help correct existing financial planning mistakes, as well as avoid potentially costly ones in the future.”—Mohamed A. El-Erian, chief economic adviser, Allianz, and author of the New York Times bestsellers When Markets Collide and The Only Game in Town “Jill Schlesinger is one of the smartest voices in personal finance and money management I know. Ignore her words of wisdom at your financial peril.”—Helaine Olen, blogger for The Washington Post and author of Pound Foolish “We don’t talk nearly enough about money, which is odd given its central place in most of our lives. I'm a big fan of Jill's, I listen to her podcast all the time and she was one of my inspirations for changing careers to become a Financial Advisor. So I was really excited to get her book. It was a quick, relatively easy read, that made what can be a pretty dry subject entertaining. Her writing style reminds me of sitting down with that friend who is going to tell you the truth even if it isn't what you want to hear, and isn't going to let you get away with your B.S. We all need a friend like that! Her advice is sound, leaning towards conservative, and she gives lots of great real-world examples on why you should prepare for life's unexpected challenges. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I think it may have helped me embrace portfolio rebalancing.

Everyone has done dumb things with their money, some dumber than others. Here, the author addresses her list of common mistakes and included stories with the financial impact of those mistakes, making what could be a very dry book more interesting. A lot of this is common sense, but as we all know, common sense isn't always so common. This was a fairly quick read with some good reminders.Thank you to Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review.

I always appreciate the no-nonsense, smart advice that Jill brings to personal finance. Almost everyone will find something here that will help them make smarter decisions about money. Especially appreciated is Jill's practical approach to spending on higher education. Plus, a great does of humor and storytelling makes this a useful and delightful read.

That's my plan at least. This book is super easy to read and draws a lot of parallels to Suze Orman's 9 Steps to Financial Freedom in terms of the key lessons. The main difference is that Jill uses more anecdotes to show how it can all go wrong and offers tips for how to make sure you don't make these dumb mistakes.

Initially I didn’t know for whom this book was written. The answer is EVERYONE. From the person who doesn’t have money to “invest” to the high net worth individual who has a sophisticated money manager, Schlesinger’s book is for all. She not only tells you what you’re doing wrong and how to fix it, she tells you WHY. You won’t change your behavior if you don’t change your thinking --Schlesinger guides you through the process of understanding your financial psychology. It’s an incredibly valuable book that has universal application. The best part though is that Schlesinger is hilarious. And oh so honest.

I read The Dumb Things Smart People Do With Their Money: Thirteen Ways to Right Your Financial Wrongs and completely enjoyed the book. For someone like me, nearing retirement it is a valuable resource if only to serve as a check on the decisions my wife and I have made so far. There is a wealth of great advice delivered in an easy and fun to read style. Some of the mistakes we’ve already made can’t be undone but many of our choices can still be modified to greater advantage. I highly recommend this useful financial guide.

Jill delivers great advice in a great read! I am making this a mandatory book to read for my son. It isn't dumb to make financial mistakes but it is dumb not to be aware of what they are. Thanks for clearing up so many areas I've struggled with for years.

This book is an easy read and is filled with excellent advice and real life examples.

Dan Kennedy is probably the greatest marketer period and one of the best copywriters. I’ve listened to many of his courses, but this is the first time I’ve read one of his books cover to cover and he definitely didn’t disappoint. I almost thought that because he has such high priced programs, there’s no way he would give value in a $10-$20 book, but it’s worth a 100x what i paid for it. Anyone that has a business or sells anything needs to read this book.

The book is all about practicality. I believe the strongest advise he has is to make swipe files. I created a sales letter from just the instructions but did not look at what others have done and it flopped. So, copy what works. Do not reinvent the wheel. He says the process is less creative and more formulaic. I would say stick to exactly what he says.

Love this book!! get it and get to work on your business copywriting....learn what realy matters in your business; it is not "being" a good "technician, or getting better at the services that you provide, or the operations that you run...it is bout learning the psychology of the people that you sell to and what attracts them!! THis book has helped my in my learning of sales copy, but more importantly it gets into the core principles of marketing. Great great and very helpful.

I read this book with the hope that Dan could help me improve the message that is driving my “bad plan” onward and upward. The information is really good!

While some information in this book is a bit dated and it was primarily focused on direct marketing, Dan Kennedy also shares timeless principles of writing sales letters that can be applied even today no matter what kind of sales letters you are writing.Getting to know your target audience will never become outdated, and the suggestions he shares from his past experience are quite thorough. He mentions that in order to get into the mind of his readers, in this instance dentists, he'd read every industry publication every month, visit websites that host discussions forums for dentists, subscribe to email groups where only dentists communicate back and forth, attend industry functions, conventions, seminars, trade shows, he'd play prospect, and routine mastermind with dentists. He then shares a step-by-step process he used to write a copy, very detailed with various examples. He shares a fill-in-the-blank headlines with examples, different ways to attract attention and to overcome barriers, how to re-write and then he offers an extensive check-list with 35 points to check your copy.Yes he does have a plug for his website and services which I find appropriate in this book, and he also has a plug for few other tools like mike Capuzzi's CopyDoodles. He then suggests re-writing for passion, and editing for clarity, and how to test your copy.At the end of the book you'll find additional resources.

Since pretty much anybody who is anybody in sales and marketing learned from Dan Kennedy, and since Dan Kennedy himself never stops learning and improving, it's fair to say that this is a guys whose every word is well worth hanging on.I've just started reading this book as I have a number of his other books to get through also, and right from the start he has over-delivered with an offer of a free 12-week sales letter writing email course. He then dives straight to the "meat" with 10 crucial questions to help home in on the exact angle that will get your mail opened and read. This book is a comprehensive "how to" manual, written entertainingly and in a way that really gets the lessons across and helps you to implement at the same time.

I have read several of Dan Kennedy's books. This one is one that I return to all the time. If you are in marketing, this is a great resource for you and I recommend it as it stands the test of time. Kev

Yep, Dan is an information marketer, i.e. he wants to sell you the information he has compiled on selling information or becoming a direct marketer. There is no doubt that he is good at it. There is no doubt he can help the people and business that want to sell more. This is a great source for compiling a great, effective profit generating sales letter. It has been on my shelf since the second edition. When I couldn't find my old copy, I bought this third edition. Which, as far as I can remember, is actually better. The thing is you have to get past the fact that the book is a sales letter. As far as I am concerned it ought to be a sales letter, that's what the book is about. Right?!? Of course it is. So to those who would say this is not a good book because it gives his websites every few pages - Get Over It! The fact of the matter is that Dan Kennedy is a Direct Marketer / Information Marketer. This book is great illustration of how he he is successful at it. Read it, takes notes, write down your own thoughts and learn. As far as references to websites that are selling you high priced advice and information, look and learn. Besides this book has a light touch compared to his and other Direct Marketers. In this book he actually references a good deal of sites, books and information that is not his. He isn't profiting off of all of it.He starts with an excellent set of excersizes that help the writer: Identify the Customer,Identify the Real MarketIdentify What Their Best Interests are, etc. Then he guides you through the art of crafting your message in the subsequent chapters. I have used these approaches since I first read them 15 years ago and forgot where I had learned them until re-reading this edition. This is one of the better sales letter books and one of the best Dan Kennedy books. If you take it for what it is and what it's cover promises, it is a great book. persuasion

This book is excellent for beginner who never use Visio before. It is to the point and it has clear and nice colorfull example. The instruction is very easy to understand. The acompanied cdrom is very helpfull to do the exercise. The opening in each chapter is rather hard to understand though, but once you do the exercise, you will understand it. This book does not cover any advanced features except the last chapter, which is customizing shapes and templates, but it give you a good feeling of becoming familiar with Visio. Once you finish reading this book, you will be more comfortable to read more advanced Visio books.

Great Product.

The authors of this book assume that you are a novice or a beginner programmer and I have to question whether novice or beginner programmers are going to be designing software using Visio. When I read this book, I quickly became bored. I already know how to save a file to the hard drive so why waste my time reading about it. In Chapter 1 through 4 the authors explain the various features of Visio and explain the basics of Visio, such as creating a diagram, adding shapes to a diagram, formatting shapes and diagrams, and connecting the shapes. I did learn some new tricks in these chapters. In Chapters 5 through 9, the authors try to teach you how to use Visio for a specific solution. For example in Chapter 5, the Authors instruct you on Creating Project Schedules. Some advanced features are explained in Chapter 10 which is the last chapter in the book.Pros: The authors do give you some useful tips and if you follow the examples you will learn Visio in a hurry. The color illustrations are excellent (with the exception of the appendix at the end of the book).Cons: The authors assume you just bought your PC yesterday and the early chapters in the book are too basic for any experienced developer. The shapes in Appendix B are not legible. The 30-day demo did not load on my Windows XP machine.

I started working with Visio with version 5; I was able to create basic layouts of networks but wanted more. I then upgraded to Visio 2000 and started reading books on what the features could do. With the installation of Visio 2002 and this book I now know there is so much I can do.From the creation of the diagram and the adding of shapes you'll learn at your pace and you can re-do any section over again you until you understand the concepts. The authors' layout the book in a format that makes the learning fun and easy. You'll also learn about connecting the shapes together, project scheduling, setting up the organizational charts, creating an office layout or network diagram. The book even shows how to integrate the application with Office XP and customizing the templates. An excellent tool for the beginner but every level should be able to find something in here. The book comes with practice files and for my money this was well worth the price.

This book does a great job outlining the objectives to be covered with each lesson. The lessons are well thought out, easy to follow and cover a variety of practical techniques. I also appreciated the book binding which allows the book to remain open and flat while typing and learning! The trial version lasts 30 days, starting from date of activation (which is required to get full functionality of the trial version of the product). While 30 days may seem like a fairly generous timeframe, time can easily slip away and before you know it, there are just a few days left before the trial version ends.I would strongly recommend one of the following: 1) Get a full version of Visio 2002 and just install the practice files so there is no time contraint or 2) Use the trial version, but read through the lessons first, before installing and using the trial. Either way, you will have more time to do the lessons you want, and will have time to review and re-do those of most interest.Definitely well worth it to get a manual like this with practice files.

"Step by Step" offers a good primer on Visio 2002 for the beginning user. A particular strength was the insight into how this most recent version of the product integrates with XP.
