I felt very lucky to get this book free from Amazon and I have enjoyed every bit of it. I read some of the novels that I grew up with and got a treat to read some that I had never heard of and they are all wonderful. If you are easily offended by old southern racial references then maybe some of his work is not for you but I felt that he did not look down on African Americans because he put the runaway slave Jim on equal footing with Tom and Huck and he wrote from his time in history and it was the norm, the way people of different races interacted at that time. Mark Twain's novels are full of humor and irony, and some very deep insight into the workings of the human spirit and mind. I highly recommend his work to anyone who wishes to enjoy novels from such a changing time and who can appreciate the differences in people but when it all came down to it everybody was the same in the end, according to Mark Twain.

It’s difficult, overall, to find fault with Mark Twain writing all though I suppose some do and reviled by some of the remarks here but then I always say to each is own. For me Twain is one of the best top 10 authors America has produced and with some of his work I would have to say that he is the best...but hey, to each his own. This Kindle edition most certainly has included all of his major novels but of course not his short stories and articles. This is a good thing for me because I know have access to many of the book I have read over and over again. I started reading Twain when I was around 5 years old...well, actually I did not read them my self but rather my mother did, but by the time I graduated from H.S. I had read all these and 70 years later I am still reading them and each time I read them I pick up a bit more. While I have all the novels here in my library It is nice to have these wonderful work while traveling. Both my wife and I have one suite case each for our books and this little kindle most certainly cuts down of the baggage during a long trip.I purchased this version January 2017 and other than a few editorial error I really had no problem with it. I like the fact that it is indexed and you can go right to the work you want.

I've long been an admirer of Mark Twain. Few writers reveal as much of themselves in their work as does Samuel Clemens (Twain). For me, he embodies the American spirit and character in a way that few others do; and "Life on the Mississippi" is Twain at the top of his game. He's a genius at dialogue, recognizes and enjoys the pretensions of people; and will not tolerate hypocrisy. His story-telling technique is wonderful, and he can be very funny. Having said that, Twain's writing can also be uneven, and sometimes a passage of utter beauty can be followed by drivel. That's Twain.I've read that when "Life on the Mississippi" was submitted for publication, Twain's editors thought it was too short, so sent the writer on a trip down the River to reflect on the changes since he had lived there. Twain is Twain, so reading that part of the book is not unpleasant, but it is really just a travel piece that does not begin to rise to the levels of his earlier reflections. Even so, Twain seemed to be aware that he was writing the story of a time and place that was rapidly disappearing; and in that I think he was correct. "Life on the Mississippi" stands as a valuable snapshot of a time, place, and writer that are no more.

Read this book on a rainy weekend, mostly because nothing else to do, and i didn't expect much. I was pleasantly surprised.Excellent. Well researched. Growing up in the west in a railroad town, my knowledge of the River and the boats was limited. I didn't realize the early movement from the east coast was centered North and South along the Mississippi and not straight west as most are led to believe. The author makes the early days come alive.

This is a fun little book that I've recommended to friends. I ordered it for my Kindle based on the enjoyment I got from reading the author's effort on the Erie Canal, and I can't say I was disappointed. I grew up only 20 miles from the Mississippi, but what I didn't know about the Father of Waters could -- and did -- fill a book. I was particularly interested in learning more about the early arrival of steamboats on the Ohio/Mississippi/Missouri river system, how dangerous the travel could be, and how competitive. Certainly Mr. Andrist leans on the experiences and the writing of Mark Twain, but his early experiences as a steamboat pilot go a long way toward explaining just how ever-changing the river could be. Also fascinating to me was the fact that just about anyone could travel by steamboat -- if they were willing to load and unload cargo and help take on wood at every stop. Plus, his accounts of steamboat races had me on the edge of my seat. Talk about a truly dangerous "sport...." In short this is an interesting account of a little bit of Americana that helped settle the heart of the country, but it little covered today. Fortunately, Mr. Andrist helps make up for that.

Living a Feminist Life, by Sara Ahmed

Review

"Fans of bell hooks and Audre Lorde will find Ahmed's frequent homages and references familiar and assuring in a work that goes far beyond Betty Friedan's The Feminine Mystique, capturing the intersection so critical in modern feminism." (Abby Hargreaves Library Journal 2017-01-01)"Living a Feminist Life is a work of embodied political theory that defies the conventions of feminist memoir and self-help alike. . . . Living a Feminist Life makes visible the continuous work of feminism, whether it takes place on the streets, in the home, or in the office. Playful yet methodical, the book tries to construct a living feminism that is neither essentialist nor universalist." (Melissa Gira Grant Bookforum 2017-02-01)"Living a Feminist Life is perhaps the most accessible and important of Ahmed’s works to date. . . . [A] quite dazzlingly lively, angry and urgent call to arms. . . In short, everybody should read Ahmed’s book precisely because not everybody will." (Emma Rees Times Higher Education 2017-02-16)"Beautifully written and persuasively argued, Living a Feminist Life is not just an instant classic, but an essential read for intersectional feminists." (Ann A. Hamilton Bitch 2017-03-01)"This book is about a wriggling out, a speaking out. And it teaches me to write, to think, like this — word twists word, and body to thought. Because for Ahmed, words make worlds and her book — the first after she left academia in feminist revolt — is full of bluesy world-play."   (Caren Beilin Full-Stop 2017-02-28)"Living a Feminist Life is the perfect introduction to Ahmed’s academic work, if a general reader is unfamiliar with her. . . . For me, her lack of despair is the book’s strongest point. Ahmed’s work is as cutting and critical as it is joyful. There is a distinct hope and optimism for the future of diversity work – but still a demand for better." (Evelyn Deshane The F-Word 2017-03-19)"Undeniably, Ahmed’s book is a highly crafted work, both scholarly and lyrically, that builds upon itself and delivers concrete, adaptable conclusions; it is a gorgeous argument, crackling with kind wit and an invitation to the community of feminist killjoys." (Theodosia Henney Lambda Literary Review 2017-04-19)"Ahmed gifts us words that we may have difficulty finding for ourselves.... [R]eading her book provides a tentative vision for a feminist ethics for radical politics that is applicable far beyond what is traditionally considered the domain of feminism." (Mahvish Ahmad The New Inquiry 2017-05-15)"Anyone at odds with this world—and we all ought to be—owes it to themselves, and to the goal of a better tomorrow, to read this book." (Mariam Rahmani Los Angeles Review of Books 2017-06-06)"Living a Feminist Life offers something halfway between the immediacy and punch of the blog and the multi-layered considerations of a scholarly essay; the result is one of the most politically engaged, complex and personal books on gender politics we have seen in a while." (Bidisha Times Literary Supplement 2017-06-14)

Review

“From the moment I received Sara Ahmed’s new work, Living a Feminist Life, I couldn’t put it down. It’s such a brilliant, witty, visionary new way to think about feminist theory. Everyone should read this book. It offers amazing new ways of knowing and talking about feminist theory and practice. And, it is also delightful, funny, and as the song says, ‘your love has lifted me higher.’ Ahmed lifts us higher.” (bell hooks)"I read Living a Feminist Life with a deep sense of recognition. This is a book that feminists will find illuminating—acutely painful at times, but mostly profoundly insightful. Written in Sara Ahmed’s trademark evocative style whereby concepts, experiences, words, ideas, structures, and bodies are examined thoroughly from all possible angles, the book documents what it means to understand and lay claim to living everyday life as a feminist. Analytic gems like 'sweaty concepts' and 'feminist killjoy' are peppered throughout, causing the reader to pause and reflect—stopping us in our tracks, making the act of reading a 'sensational' one, thus enacting theory in the flesh. A beautifully written, smartly provocative book that belongs on our shelves, in our classrooms, and in our daughters’ hands." (Chandra Talpade Mohanty, author of Feminism without Borders: Decolonizing Theory, Practicing Solidarity)

As I listened to my feminist colleague espouse the daily challenges involved living true to her values and convictions as she encounters moments of thinly veiled misogyny and sexism, I found myself reaching into my briefcase and slowly sliding my well ear-marked copy of Living a Feminist Life across the table and uttering: “You need to read this book”.Every person who feels isolated in the righteous and often lonely fight for equality would benefit from Ahmed’s book. The volume combines deeply personal anecdotal (and often painful) stories of feeling like an outsider, even while surrounded by her closest family members, with easily digestible feminist theory. She ends the book with two practical survival guides to endure the onslaught of injustices feminists of conscience are sure to encounter as they navigate through patriarchal society.Raised in a conservative Muslim family, Ahmed delicately and heartbreakingly details her strained relationship with a father who clearly loves her as a daughter, yet is disdainful of her non-compliant willfulness. Ahmed views willfulness as consciousness brimming at the surface: questioning and challenging social mores that prescribe happiness in a predetermined set of criteria. “Being estranged from one’s own life can be how a world reappears, becoming odd…to become conscious of possibility can involve mourning for its loss” (Ahmed, page 47).Once feminist consciousness is turned on, evidence of injustice seems to rear its head at every turn, leaving the feminist killjoy feeling like an alien in a world full of people who seem incapable of breathing the same air she does. Ahmed states that feminist killjoys become a problem when we describe a problem: (Ahmed, pg 38, 39, 62): Through feminism you make sense of wrongs; you realize that you are not in the wrong. But when you speak of something as being wrong, you end up being in the wrong all over again. The sensation of being wronged can thus end up magnified; you feel wronged by being perceived as in the wrong just for pointing out something is wrong. It is frustrating….Feministconsciousness can be thought of as consciousness of violence and power concealed under the languages of civility, happiness, and love, rather than simply or only consciousness of gender as a site of restriction of possibility.Ahmed also takes aim at diversity and inclusion initiatives instituted at organizations. She sees them as simply a ruse – a way of looking like something is being done, when really nothing is being done. It is a doubly violent exercise of giving the appearance of doing something, but really doing nothing, and exploiting an oppressed person as the lead in the futile exercise. She utilizes a metaphor of a wall that she encountered in diversity work that keeps the master’s residence standing. Her metaphor conjures memories of feminist Audre Lorde’s contention that you cannot tear down the master’s house with the master’s tools.Ahmed’s description of feminist snap, that point when the pressure of the cumulative injustices ruptures one’s ability to be complacent any longer, is a powerful metaphor. She describes it as the basis for feminist revolt and the gathering of an army willing to stand for feminist hope. It is why, when I hear my feminist sister lost in a sea of despair I slide Living a Feminist Life to my comrade and suggest: “You need to read this book”.

This is a wonderful book and taught me a lot about the struggles for women, especially those who have largely been marginalized due to ethnicity or sexual orientation. Everybody should read this book.

This book put together so many thoughts, feelings, emotions, and experiences about life as a "feminist killjoy." From expertly crafting narratives that you can feel yourself around "diversity" work and becoming the problem when you bring up a problem. Accessible to read for new readers of Ahmed (if Queer Phenomenology had your head spinning like mine was). My self care and activism is so much better off from reading this tet

This is a fantastic book and opened my eyes to how patriarchy works on an emotional and personal level. As a man I found it useful, as a business leader I found it useful as a human I found it useful. Everyone should read this book.

Ahmed's work is wonderful. This book was enjoyable to read, and it's working as part of the theoretical basis for my dissertation.

Arrived on time and the price was perfect!

Excellent book. Highly recommend.

This book is articulate and poignant. I learned a lot about feminism and myself. She also made some excellent recommendations for further literature to invest in. I have suggested this book to just about everyone I know

My best friend had a bone martow transplant and this book was extremely helpful. I read this and others before hand and all though it is a little old it was still very relevant. It gave me a better understanding of what was coming. Although she didn't read any of them I was able to answer her questions about what was normal and what wasn't. It is helpful for caregivers and patients. It is simply written which is hard to find when it comes to medical procedures. I would recommend to anyone who needs a little guidance in this area.

The book was new.....just like I purchased off the shelf!. Price was one penny plus shipping. I purchased this guide for my sister and me. She will soon receive a stem cell transplant, and I am a complete sibling match for the transplant. . The stories of survivors was very helpful and encouraging. I was thrilled to find this guide available for purchase.

I read this book and then mailed it to my brother who was about to have a BMT. I was his donor. It helped us prepare for a most difficult decision and time. I would urge any BMT patient to read this book and others like it.

Every family member of patient or patient going through bone marrow transplant should have this book

So excited to read this book. This book is in excellent condition, even though it is used. I'm a new nurse on a BMT inpatient unit, and I think this will give me a good basic overview of the patient's view of things.

goood

Although the title suggests this guide is for patients only, family and friends of patients will find the guide insightful, useful and enabling of support in ongoing contact with a patient. This guide to a difficult and complicated subject is well-written and thorough, yet simply and clearly explained. References are broad, offering many more helpful resources. Definitely a guide for patients, their families, and their friends.

Have read it once and will reread it as it is a lot to absorb. Hope it will be a good reference in the near future. Will try to review it again after we have used this reference.
