We have been using the previous editions of this calendar for the past eight years. The photography is excellent, and so is the print quality. Some of the photos are so good that we have had them framed for the office. This edition is as good as the others. It is good for starting the day with a cosmic perspective as we head out the door, helps keep a positive point of view on everything.

I have been around quite a few years, but this is the first calendar I have bought that requires TWO holes to hang it on the wall. Are the manufacturers so arrogant as to assume that I will put two holes in my wall to mount this thing?? It is probably too late to return it to Amazon, and it isn't worth the trouble to repackage it to do so anyway; so into the trash bin it goes. Lesson learned: No more calendars for me unless I see them before I buy.

I get this for my son every year; he looks forward to it and it always meets his expectations!

This book goes through a history of the multiple Brooklyn baseball teams in the three decades from 1850. These eventually coalesced, despite some temporary name changes along the way, into the Brooklyn Dodgers. The author then gives a history of the team - key players, managers and owners - from the late 19th century to the mid-twentieth century.However, for a book that purports to tell "the story" of the Brooklyn Dodgers, it has ambiguities, omissions and mistakes, and is desperately in need of a good editor.To begin, there is a photograph of the Brooklyn team of 1888. The author's caption "identifies" the players by their position in each row. But as some players were standing, sitting and in between, it is impossible to tell who is in which row. The caption does nothing to assist the reader and therefore the author's "identification" of the players is useless.Then there are the mistakes. The author has another picture, this one of the 1916 World Series, which he captions "...shows the only scoring action in the second game." As he states below that the final score was 2-1, there obviously were two more "scoring actions" in that game.Under a picture of Casey Stengel, the author writes that "...he led the Yankees to championships year in and year out in the 1950s and 1960s."Stengel's last Yankee pennant championship was in 1960; that single year hardly qualifies as "the 1960s". And while he did win eight pennants in the 1950s, he lost in two years; that was most of the decade but not "year in and year out".Then there are the omissions. The small one is in the caption of a picture Manager Wilbert Robinson and pitcher Rube Marquard. The caption says the pitcher's delivery was like a dance step he performed with his movie star wife. Having pointed out that she was a movie star begs the question: which movie star was his wife? But the author just ignores that.Another omission is Game 4 of the 1947 World Series. Cookie Lavagetto's pinch-hit double in the ninth inning breaking up Bill Beven's no-hitter was a historic moment in Brooklyn. But the author completely ignores it.But the biggest omission is with the 1950s Dodgers. The book's back page blurb claims "A large part of Brooklyn Dodgers is dedicated to those teams of the 1950s..." That is pure hype - and completely false. The key part of the book - covering the "Boys of Summer" - is in Chapter Eight, a very slim chapter and a very small part of the book. The 1955 World Series win is there, as are some of players. But just as many are not. A book about the 50s Dodgers not mentioning mainstay relief pitcher Clem Labine, making no note of Carl Furillo's unique ability to play balls hit off the concave right field wall - nor of his rifle arm throwing out runners at home plate - and not noting that Don Newcombe was not only an outstanding pitcher but was often used as a pinch hitter is hardly telling the Dodgers story.The book needed another dozen pages to cover the 1950s teams. It is a shame that this book, while giving much history, is such a letdown dealing with the key Dodger decade.

Author Mark Rucker has gotten hold of some priceless photographs from the Dodger archives in writing “Images of Sports: Brooklyn Dodgers” for ARCADIA PUBLISHING. Rucker includes photos of some of the most significant moments in Dodgers history, including Jackie Robinson staring at home as Bobby Thomson crosses the plate to give the Giants the pennant in 1951, and the great catch by Sandy Amoros in the 1955 World Series to help preserve the game 7 win for Johnny Podres. Balancing these moments of gravitas are spring training shots of Hugh Casey wearing a huge sombrero and of Harold “Pee Wee” Reese signing some autographs at Vero Beach.The book is divided into eight chapters, with the first page of each chapter containing a single photograph that is about twice the size of the other photographs in the book. Other than the introductory pages, generally, all pages of the book have two photographs on them.Among the nuggets of information that Rucker includes in his book are naming the pitcher who Joe DiMaggio called the “meanest man” he had ever seen. (DiMaggio was referring to Whitlow Wyatt, a pitcher in the 1940’s for the Dodgers, who Rucker calls an “aggressive knockdown artist.”) In his chapter titled “1910-1919,” Rucker provides two great shots of future manager Casey Stengel in his playing days, reminding us that Stengel could also play the game, as he hit .364 in the 1916 World Series, leading the Dodgers in batting in the series.The book is not flawless, as second baseman Jerry Coleman is identified as a shortstop on page 121 and on page 117 Rucker states Erskine held the World Series strikeout record of 14 until 1967, when in fact it was 1963 that the record was broken. Rucker fails to point out that the pitcher doing the breaking was none other than Sandy Koufax, who struck out 15 Yankees in game 1 of the World Series.In an ideal world, I would have enjoyed seeing more prose, especially in the introduction to each chapter, allowing Rucker to elaborate on the rich history of the Brooklyn franchise.All in all, this was a quick and enjoyable read.Note: The author of this review is also the author of “Spring Training with the Washington Nationals,” published by FONTHILL MEDIA in April 2015. As with the “Brooklyn Dodgers,” the book on the Nationals is 128 pages and uses some excellent photographs to tell its story. All photographs in “Spring Training with the Washington Nationals are in color and are part of Fonthill’s “Images of Modern America” series.

The only reason I gave it a 4 was because i try to reserve 5's for "brand new, right off the presses"Other than that the book was perfect, shipped well and on time and at a great price. One thing, this book is for TRUE Soprano fans, the ones who want to know EVERYTHING about the show. Not the perfect book for the "gabagool" loving paisan or the fans that couldn't wait to see Richie Aprile get what was coming to him. PS, it does not give any insight into the final episodeThis book is highly slanted towards the production of the show. Everything from the kind of liquid substituted for booze to how good the food really was.Don't get me wrong, tons of good stories and particulars about the show that a casual fan would appreciate, just try not to gloss over the backstage sections

The book itself should be on the shelf of any fan of the series. It's not the usual slipshod rider on a successful show; it's a well produced and informative look behind the scenes, with lots of interesting comments by David Chase and the actors. My copy was purchased used, in very good (almost fine) condition, at a very reasonable price. My compliments to the seller, who came through well and quickly.

This book brought me back to all of the episodes that I had watched over the years with splendid details making it all rich and bustling again. I watched all of the episodes a second time which were available through my cable carrier and then got to see and read all sorts of background material about the series and its creation. The book covers all areas of the production and is a nice reference for the story content of each episode. .

I have seen the entire Sopranos series in its entirety four times, and I must say this book adds a whole new layer of information and fun facts that any fan of the show, writing, or TV production can appreciate. It has in-depth bios and high-res photos of the sets like inside Tony's house and the back room of the Bada Bing! It also has stories about the writers and cast off-camera, and their lives during the Sopranos days. I read this Sopranos "bible" in 3 nights. A must-read, I could not put this book down!

This novel kept me reading until the wee hours of the night. It is beautifully researched and a fabulous period novel. The character of Eve is especially strong. This novel shows how Eve blooms under severe hardship and help from the Lord above stairs. It shows how the above stairs folks begin to learn that those of the " lower" classes can be bright, resourceful, and remarkable. I highly recommend this book.

The setting was interesting. I found the story line too predictable and the characterizations somewhat cookie cutter, stereotypical ...Aa romance cloaked as historical fiction

The author drew me into the book immediately. Her descriptions of each character quickly established them in my mind. The one word that describes her writing style is "comfortable" - I felt like I was like sitting down with the author sharing a cup of tea each afternoon. I'm already into her second book, "Ravenscliff."

The characters in Netherwood are very engaging and believable, and the historical detail is fascinating. It's an upbeat story that focuses on people's ability to make life-affirming choices even in the midst of hardship.

I loved Downton Abbey and wish this could be shown as that was. It's well written and holds your interest in an enjoyable way The writer lets you learn to know and feel a part of life in the mining estates and villages at that time. I'm in the next book in this series, Ravenscape, and know I won't want to leave whenever the final one ends.

I would recommend Netherwood to anyone who likes English historical novels. It is slightly similar to Downton Abbey and Upstairs Downstairs. It is very well written - better than the usual standard of this type of novel, with excellent grammar and spelling, which to me is very important. The story keeps moving along at a good pace, with lots of interesting twists and turns in the lives of the main characters, and never gets boring. I enjoyed it so much I didn't really want the story to end, so I was very pleased when I discovered there was a sequel, which I ordered and started reading straight away!

Good historical novel - I like fairly light interesting historical novels and this one did not disappoint. I enjoyed the characters and writing. The main character is widowed and opens a small food service in her mining community. There are some problems of course. Not real deep, but enjoyable reading. I got the next book in the series already.

I LOVE this series. Waiting for a book 4 now, although no signs of it. First and Second were really riveting. Book 3 Eden Falls, also good, just since it is often in Jamaica, a bit different than first two that filled my Downton Abbey empty 'spot.'

Discover Your True North Like many books on leadership, this one is packed with examples of people who've made it. While it does include a few nods to those who fell from the path, the majority of the book spends time with those whose successess are well known and in some cases, are still impacting the world today. For example, Roy Vagelos or Ken Fraizer.The ideas behind the book are not complex and it's tragic that so much of the time the book feels like it is fighting an uphill battle. Gems like not shortchanging the future in order to fund the now. Like treating your fellow human beings the way you want to be treated. Like incorporating your IQ with your EQ. Like being mindful of not only yourself but the greater whole of the world and your companies place in it.The mantra of service to others, to all your shareholders, the employees and the customers, not just the stockholders, rings as true in this book as it has in numerous other books.

At first I was a bit skeptical about this book. It looked like one of those self-help kind of books that just state the obvious and are nothing more than a positive feedback loop. Nonetheless, it came highly recommended to me from one of my friends taking Bill George's course on Authentic Leadership at Harvard Business School. To my surprise, the book was excellent. If you read this book with an open mind focused on improving yourself, then there is a lot that can be learned here. Not sure? Here's a summary of my thoughts on the book as well as the lessons learned.Your Life StoryBill George begins by explaining that leadership follows from understanding your 'True North' (purpose). While this may seem obvious, it's actually not very often practiced. Many people want to be leaders just to be important or climb the ranks in a company. Often people want to be leaders because that seems to be what one ought to aspire to. Bill George uses the lift stories of other iconic leaders and shows how that the best cases of leadership are derived from following your True North. The best example is that of Howard Schultz (CEO of Starbucks). Schultz says:My inspiration comes from seeing my father broken from the 30 terrible blue-collar jobs he had over his life, where an uneducated person did just not have a shot.For those familiar with the business of Starbucks, Starbucks provides health-coverage to even part-time workers. In addition they have a world-renowned training program that many Starbucks employees have called 'life-changing'. This has led to many Starbucks employees and executives looking up to Schultz as a true leader. I doubt Schultz would have been seen as the iconic leader he is if he didn't derive his leadership from identifying and following his True North. The moral of this chapter? Reflect on your life story and examine how it shapes you and your reason to lead.Losing Your WayThis chapter ties in very well to the previous one. We all have at least a somewhat decent understanding of our True North, but more often than not we forget about it. We become grotesque as Sherwood Anderson explains in [book: Winesburg, Ohio: A Group of Tales of Ohio Small Town Life|23838169] (an excellent read). The grotesque is simply a metaphor how we often let society distract us from our True Purpose. This can happen because we start to chase extrinsic rewards such as money and fame. This can also happen because we become a slave to others' expectations of us, instead of doing what we really want. Bill George gets it right in his analysis of the fallen-from-grace Rajat Gupta who went from being an iconic leader of McKinsey to being in jail for insider trading. He writes:Maybe he started to define himself by his net worth instead of self-worth.It is important to not lose your way and become one of the grotesque. By following your True North, you will inevitably end up a more fulfilled person.CruciblesWe are often defined by our biggest moments of failure or loss. Sometimes we let this define us in a negative way. We let these moments fill us with rage, hate, and resentment. Even worse, we let it distract us from our True North. Instead, we must see these as opportunities to learn and make the world a better place. Bill George uses the story of Marilyn Nelson (owner of Carlson Inc.) and how she was able to use her daughter's untimely death to make the world a better place for others. Bill George puts it best when he says:Use the event to transform your wound into a pearl.It may sound cliche, but it's nonetheless true.Self AwarenessIt is at this point in the book that Bill George starts to tie in the idea behind one's True North to leadership. Here, Bill George makes the distinction between Authentic Leadership and Leadership. Many of us are leaders, but not many are authentic leader. What's the difference? It should be obvious if you've ever met a leader that isn't authentic. Something just feels off about certain leaders and that is usually because of a lack of authenticity. It is important to be an authentic leader. People follow authentic leaders much better than leaders who are not authentic. The key to building this authenticity is self-reflection. Many leaders have a natural tendency to try and appear invincible and even have a holier-than-tho air about them. This is a mistake for two reasons. It makes you appear not authentic AND it breaks you down as a person when you fail to use any of the existing support structures around you. He writes:To protect yourself from harm, you may develop a false self by building protective layers. In doing so, you become less authentic. Without being aware of your vulnerabilities... it is easy to go off the track of your True North...John Bryant (CEO of Hope) explains that vulnerabilities left untouched are weaknesses. But, vulnerabilities exposed to your support structure and peers can actually be strengths. He says:If I've got nothing to hide and admit my faults before you can call them out, what are you going to do to me?ValuesWe all have values that are important to us, as derived from our True North. Bill George says:Leadership principles are values translated into practice.When being a leader it is important that we let our values define how we act, not letting how we think a leaders should act define how we act. This makes a leader authentic and able to lead with purpose.Sweet SpotThe Sweet Spot can be viewed as a culmination of the lessons mentioned above. It is important to identify what makes us tick and use it as a basis for acting on our values. Once we do this, we can truly lead. Bill George uses Warren Buffet as an example. Being one of the most successful people in finance, one may think Charles Schwab is just in it for the money. It turns out, that's not true in the least. His sweet spot was helping others. He founded his company with the purpose of trying to end the "thieving" he saw rampant on Wall Street. He sought to make financial independence an achievable goal for even the average American through a variety of financial tools. By leading from his sweet spot he ended up wildly successful, likely much more successful than if he led from just the desire to make money.Support TeamAs Bill George mentioned earlier, part of being authentic is exposing and talking about your vulnerabilities. From this follows the necessity of a support team. These are people who you can trust for honest feedback and will stick around you even (and especially) in times of failure. They will help you stay on the path of your True North. In this chapter he uses a host of different examples of how to take advantage of and where to find support teams.Integrated LifeThis chapter serves as a necessary example that a good leader isn't just a person that works relentlessly 24/7. A good leader needs to have a well-rounded life. This includes making time for friends, family, exercises, personal time, and hobbies. Most of this should be obvious and going into the science behind why well-rounded people are actually more productive than pure workers isn't really necessary here. Nonetheless, this is an important chapter that will illuminate how you may be able to live a happier and at the same time a more productive life.I to WeThis is one of the most important chapters in the book. Here, Bill George presents the idea of a servant leader. That is a leader that serves others in order to lead the group forward. In order to do this, a leader must make the transition from I to We. It should be a bit eye-opening to think:You have to realize, it's not all about you.One may think that now that they are a leader (whatever that means) that it is finally about THEM; that now they are the important one. This couldn't be further from the truth. One shouldn't view leadership as a manifestation of power in one's self. It's incomplete. Instead, one should view view leadership as a manifestation of power in one to help others achieve. By thinking on the we level instead of the I level, one can truly become a great and influential leader.PurposeBill George explains here that in order to lead an organization, we must have a strong idea of purpose. He says:Purpose is the motivating force that binds people together to drive the organization toward common goals.It is important to have a clear and defined purpose, otherwise everyone is simply running in every direction. By having a purpose the transition from I to We can become a lot smoother.Global LeadershipHere, Bill George talks about the value of being a global leader in a world that is becoming increasingly interconnected. Personally, it was difficult for me to find value in or apply any of these lessons since in order to be a global leader you need to be fairly far along in your journey. Nonetheless, exposure to this idea was very important and this section could be very important to others.EmpowermentThis the final section that brings the book full-circle. Once one has made this journey, it is important that we always focus on empowerment and creating other leaders. This is a critical aspect of going from I to We and becoming a servant leader. If leaders focus on empowering others, than those that follow them will do so happily and everyone will prosper in the end.All in all, a great read. The most important tip I have is to actually write down answers to the questions at the end of each chapter. The self-reflection is very useful and will immediately result in the book becoming relevant to your daily life.

Bill George does well with research for his presentation. the reader encounters the usual "experts" in the field of leadership. In addition, the reader is exposed to several quality authors from the realm of educational leadership. The book follows a model made popular by Jim Collins (Good to Great). Thus, the chapters are illustrative of the points the author achieves. The book is a good read, and the principles explored are worth the readers' time and investment.

The stories of leaders on how being an authentic leader helped them highlighted the lessons taught.The chapter on global leadership was also very insightful.
