I bought this title recently because I need a definitive guide to style for work. I would have loved this being on Kindle, but it is not, so I made the effort and ordered this manual from the Book Depository.If this book was complete, I would give it a 3-star rating. However, I have just noticed 2 major faults, and I think the book needs to be retired from the market because it is chaos and unusable as it is. These findings are random, found right when consulting this book. I am going to return it.>> Pages 609-656 missing from the printed book!>>> Page 560 is the end of letter E and 561 is beginning of letter F, and letter F is complete in p. 576, then letter G starts at p. 577 and all good and no problem and ends at p. 592, then p. 593 is the start of letter H. , which is incomplete and interrupted at p. 608. What follows is p. 561 and start of letter F, which ends in p. 576. Letter G follows again in p. 577 and ends all complete in 592. Letter H is started all over again in p. 593 and goes well until p. 608 (another 608) and then followed by p. 657, which is the last page of letter L Total chaos.>> I think there must be many more, because even if there are just two blocks of mistakes, they have already created a domino effect on the rest book that makes it useless.This "definitive guide" is definitely not definitive but finite.GOOD THINGS ABOUT THIS BOOK> It is Oxford's word on writing style. Therefore, it is very useful and a must if you are bound by the Oxford style sheet in writing and editing at University or work.> This manual includes two books in one.> You pay two books for the price of one.> Despite the voluminous size, almost 1,000 pages, the book is relatively light and easy to handle.> Hard cover and good binding, so the book is flexible and can be fully opened without the binding resenting it.> The dictionary is helpful at times.> The style manual is helpful at times.HUGE NO-NOSee beginning.MAIN NO-NOSNo-no no. 1 -- Year 2016, 21st century. If you work with texts and editions you most probably work in front of a computer. Having your tools online, on CD-Rom or in electronic format makes work faster, easier and more enjoyable, not to mention the space you save in your shelves. That being the case, I expect any prestigious editorial house to understand that, and to make an effort to have all their manuals in electronic format or at least on CD-Rom. This being the case, I cannot understand why a book like this is not on Kindle or CD-Rom. One of the books in this manual is already available as ebook, why not the other, or why not producing this manual on CD-Rom?No-no no. 2 -- Despite the title, I find this manual not specific for professionals, more for Ph.D. students, and for people who are starting to work in translation, edition or writing, not for people who are already professionals. Professionals have as many doubts as anybody else, but theirs are different and more specific.No-no no. 3 -- Most of the info provided in this book can be found, better and larger in other Oxford manuals and dictionaries or, at times, on the Internet for free, the Oxford Dictionaries Website included.THE CONTENTS OF THIS MANUALThe book includes the New Hart's Rules Manual, the New Oxford Dictionary for Writers and Editors and some appendixes, plus an index.1/ THE NEW HART'S RULES MANUAL (NHR onwards)This is Waddingan's published a few months ago, both in hard copy and Kindle, of which I have the Kindle edition. The NHR is not the most useful book for a professional working with language. Many of my doubts were not solved. Like, do you add a full stop at the end of any item in a table? Although it is clear enough, great for beginners, lacks a bit of contextualised use, and it is not exhaustive in explanations or rules. This was one of the reasons I decided to buy this definite book for writers and editors, expecting the shortcomings to be fixed. Oh Well. In my experience, a classic like the Swan's Practical English Language is way more helpful to solve my doubts regarding use than the NHR. I found the book not specially well structured, especially in the references section, and I considered not good separating online from not online references, as sometimes both are provided in a note, and I expect the way of reference a book to be mention both in traditional and online format together. Some of the headings in the book are a bit vague and confusing, not helpful.2/ NEW OXFORD DICTIONARY FOR WRITERS AND EDITORSI work with specialised texts and with specialised vocabulary, some of the word is from Latin, French or Italian, and I always hesitate whether the word is accepted enough and already incorporated into the English Language, and whether I have to use capitals or italics, hyphenate or no, break where. I use, on a daily basis, a Concise Oxford Dictionary in CD-Room (COD onwards) which is great, but it comes short at times for my queries and doubts. I was hoping to get the answers from this specialised dictionary. Well, this has been another disappointment. Although some of my usual doubts are included there, many of them are not.I have done a random sampling for you to see:>> Word colophony THIS BOOK Colophony, rosin. COD colophony /kəˈlɒfəni, ˈkɒləˌfəʊni/ Ⴂnoun another term for rosin. – origin Middle English: from Latin colophonia (resina) ‘(resin) from Colophon’, a town in Lydia, Asia Minor. FREE OXFORD WEBSITE colophony Pronunciation: /kəˈlɒfəni/ Pronunciation: /ˈkɒləˌfəʊni noun. Another term for rosin. Example sentences Origin: Middle English: from Latin colophonia (resina) '(resin) from Colophon', a town in Lydia, Asia Minor. For editors and proofreaders Line breaks: col¦oph|ony Definition of colophony in: US English dictionary>> Word Viaticum not in this manual, included in the COD, and appears with notes for editors in the website, which is more than what you find in this definitive book addressed to professionals.>> High Mass. Ditto. Ditto.>> However, you find words like vibrator...and micro-biographical references to people with such difficult names to spell and remember as... G. Bush and George W. Bush.So the most useful tool for writers and professionals is actually their free look-up tool in their website Isn't that outrageous?3/ APPENDIXESI would have preferred the space devoted to these appendixes to be used to enlarge the dictionary. I have compared the appendixes in this manual against those in the COD and, except for the first two appendixes which are specific for editors and publishers, the others are are available in the COD and those that are not are easily to find on the Internet, secondary-education books and, in the case of symbols, in the symbol chart of your Word program or in specific comprehensive symbol databases on the Internet. The main question to me is, are these appendixes necessary for a professional who has an Internet connection? The answer is NO.The appendixes in this manual are:> Proofreading marks. Useful. Not in the COD> Glossary of printing and publishing terms. Useful. Not in the COD.> Primer Ministers of UK and USA. The COD has the same listing bit it also includes the USA, Canada, New Zealand and Australia!> Members of the European Union. Not in the COD. Free in the Wikipedia. The UK brexit it!> Greek Alphabet. Also in the COD.> Diacritics, accents, and special sorts. Not in the COD. OK.> Mathematical symbols. OK.> SI Units. Included in the COD.> Metric Prefixes. Available in the COD.> Chemical elements. Also in the COD.The COD, besides those mentioned above, includes: King and Queens of England and the UK; solar system and principal planetary satellites; collective Nouns; countries of the World with their capitals, population and currencies; and States of the USA, with capitals, postal abbreviations and popular names given to each State.4/ GENERAL INDEXThat is OK, more a detailed table of contents than a proper index.IN SHORTThis book (if some pages weren't missing, but they are) is good if you are a student, or beginning to edit books or work in translation. If you are a professional you will find that both the New Hart's Rules and the Dictionary for Writers and Editors included in this manual are handy and helpful at times, but both fall short for what you need. Not my preferred manual. You can have the NHR on Kindle, which comes handy if you work in front of a computer (who doesn't these days?!), and check the Oxford Website for doubts about specific words and the search is free and updated regularly.PS/>> Not even two months since I wrote this review and they have modified the Oxford Dictionaries website, so editorial remarks on a word do not come up as they used to in a search. >> I got the book exchange for free and the second copy was perfect. Yet, a book on edition and publication that has all the mishap I found in the first copy is a clear joke.

Picoult is known for writing compelling stories about timely, ethical issues and Small Great Things is no exception. It was immediately drawn into the lives of the three main characters who share their points of view -- Ruth, the African-American nurse who is charged with a crime; Kennedy - the white lawyer who defends her and Turk, the white supremacist whose young son has died. By using these three varied points of view Picoult delves into the issue of racism.These perspectives engage the reader immediately with characters who are well-rounded and believably flawed. You will love some of their actions and hate some but I guarantee you will feel something. It is, at times, heart-wrenching, maddening, shocking and frustrating but always compelling. The characters face different issues and I can't say that I was 100% on board with any of them. While I abhorred Turk's racism I could also sympathize with his loss as a parent. While I found what happened to Ruth unjust and maddening I also wondered why she didn't make other choices.Some people criticize Picoult for being too formulaic but one cannot deny that she gives her readers food for thought. She, once again, uses her 'ethical issue/courtroom drama' formula (which I was fine with) but I'll admit to not being a fan of the ending which I found was wrapped up too easily and predictably. Satisfying but predictable.Picoult has opened the discussion regarding intolerance and racism - in both its active and passive forms. Hopefully, this book will give readers a new perspective on racism and show how even small comments and actions only help to perpetuate the current environment of intolerance. Just because the situation is fine for us some of us, doesn't mean we shouldn't stop and think about how it affects others. It's this message of passive racism that stood out for me the most." If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way."- Dr. Martin Luther KingPicoult tackled this topic with a lot of research and an equal amount of sensitivity. I encourage people to read the author's note at the end of the book regarding why she, as a white woman, took on the topic of racism. With all the moral, ethical and racial issues that were touched on I feel that this would make an excellent book club selection.This book continues to creep into my thoughts and I find myself wondering about the daily racism that people of colour continue to face - especially subtle, passive prejudice. What I'm hoping is that we keep this discussion going. Talk about racism and intolerance with our kids. Call people on their racist comments. Listen and believe people when they share their experiences. Racism isn't just about hate. It's about ignorance. It's about an unbalanced system of power and about the little things that encourage intolerance.We can be better than this. We need to do better. Everyone has the chance to make a difference - small or great. I am South African. I grew up in apartheid South Africa. Nelson Mandela was released from prison when I was 18 years of age.It was a renewing of the mind for me. I had to learn to think differently. I had to see things differently. It sounds crazy, but it was as if I was brainwashed. Brainwashed by my country and by my upbringing.But, South Africa legalized apartheid, named it, called it into existence. As wrong as that is, it was out there, known to all.When I read small great things, I felt like America had this disease, this underlying disease that no one knew about. It rots from the inside. And the entire nation walks around pretending it's all ok.In some ways, in South Africa, we are blessed, our disease was a big rotting sore, and we cut it open and it oozed puss and blood and it was not nice to look at, and it was shameful, but we knew it was there and that we had to do something about it. So we cut it open and exposed it to the world, but most importantly to ourselves, and that is where the healing began. We still have a lot to learn, we still have a long road ahead, but we are healing and learning to love again. I pray the same for America.

What about all the other minorities who agree with the conservative views of the Tea Party? Are they racist bigots? Totally insulting!! The story could have done without these veiled insults entirely and been a good story. There are also the insults to those who watch Fox News, insinuating that there is trash news on that is unfit for children. Again, this is insulting to a great many Americans, a good majority of Americans, and it was totally unnecessary in the frame of the story. You disappoint me thoroughly, Ms. Picoult. This is the last of your books that I will read. I, by the way, am not a Tea Party member, but I know a good number of them, good people who love this country in all its diversity. Shame on you.

But when she and the other warrior trainees take their final test to prove themselves, Rasmira finds out she has been betrayed by the people she thought she knew. It's not long into the story when we find Rasmira being outcast into the wilds. She's give an impossible task known as a mattugr that basically sets her up for failure in its impossibility. The task? To kill the god that has been terrorizing their villages for years.I was quite surprised that once Rasmira is on her way to her seclusion in the wilds that she encounters two other outcast teens. At the same time, I was actually hoping for something like this to happen because I couldn't imagine reading a 300+ page book about a heroine who didn't get to interact with anyone other than monsters and the god she is tasked with killing. She meets Soren and Irik, two boys who failed their final tests and have their own impossible mattugrs ahead of them. While Rasmira is loathed to let herself trust again, she finds herself doing just that with these boys. They discover that if they have any hope of returning to their homes, they will have to learn to work together.I quite enjoyed Rasmira's interactions with Soren and Irik! And never fear, there is no love triangle here as Irik is already spoken for! But that leaves Soren up for grabs! Soren is the first to "fall," yet Rasmira isn't about to let her heart get broken again and constantly shuts down Soren's attempts. It was rather realistic to see Rasmira being unwilling to trust Soren whatsoever. The way that she was betrayed would definitely leave its scars on you and trusting again wouldn't be easy. But as you can imagine, that begins to change, ever so slowly, over the course of the novel.I really enjoyed Rasmira's character. She wasn't perfect, she had her flaws, but I really liked that she began to learn that about herself and slowly change (in the right ways) to become a better person. She wasn't horrible mind you, but there were little things that get pointed out to her eventually and though it's never stated, you can clearly see her trying to be better.The ending was quite amazing! I loved everything that led up to it and then the grand finale itself! The story leaves us in the perfect place too! It's the way I prefer my series (and standalones) to end! Warrior of the Wild has a lot going for it! It's action packed, there's MONSTERS, seriously scary and deadly monsters, romance, humor, shocking surprises, and growth from lessons learned. It was thought provoking in a roundabout way.There were only a few minor things that bugged me about this. Nothing too extreme, but I feel like I can't say with confidence that it was a flawless read. Sure there were times when I didn't agree with Rasmira's choices, but I feel like that's typical of any book because if she made the choices I wanted her to go for, there wouldn't be a story! Lol. Perhaps I just needed more to the story as well. Just the simple MORE. I think if there was just a little something more to it I would be all over giving this one five stars. It's still a tremendously worthy story that I still highly recommend! It's definitely different from my usual fantasy reads and I really loved the warrior woman vibe it had going! This is a story not to be missed!Overall Rating 4/5 stars

I love Norse Mythology. Well, I love mythology period. I`m a complete sucker for mythology. I enjoy learning what civilizations past, and even people now, turned to when they needed something, anything to believe in. I hopped onto this story after discovering Levenseller through Owlcrate with her Daughter of the Pirate King duology. I absolutely devoured this book in one sitting. I was up until about 3 am I believe.*First off, I have so many little flags of quotes that got me and will be added to my quote book soon. This book, like her others, was full of a self determined and self believing female MC who proves she can break the mold and challenge the way of things. I also enjoyed the difference of the 2 gods. Primarily, one that lives and terrifies the people and one who watches over and embraces her people in warmth.***Also, beware of Torrin...***Also, I want that metal/those rocks***READ IT!!!! AND HER OTHER BOOKS!!!

This book is one full of adventure and "romance" and redemption.Rasmira is banished to the wild after betrayal on multiple fronts. Through her harrowing journey, she makes friends, learns what it means to be a leader, and learns about forgiveness.The romance is definitely YA, well, YA as I wish it would be (making out but no sex). The relationship builds slowly and realistically.Rasmira learns how to be a leader by helping others on their quests. She realizes what true leadership looks like and earns the respect of her fellows.She also learns about forgiveness, as her fellow banished struggle with resentment toward one another.In the end, not everything is perfect (because that's not how real life works), but there is hope for the future.Quick and engaging read. I really enjoyed it.

THIS BOOK WAS EVERYTHING I WANTED IT TO BE.Oh my goodness. The book is beautiful to begin with. The story was easy to fall into and the characters are my new besties. I want to be a warrior like Raz. She is awesome and her arc was exactly what I wanted it to be. And Soren. Oh I love him. The setting was easy to follow and the monsters were fantastic. Just everything was wonderful.

This was such an amazing story. One I just could not put down. I am left wanting more wanting the story to continue on! It is so rewarding to have these kick ass women standing up for themselves and kicking butt. I don't think I can read stories any more if the women is portrayed helpless.

I loved this book so much! I love her writing style and strongly recommend if you love this to check out her other books! I loved those as well. I couldn't get enough of this book I didn't want it to end! Just wanted to continue the story as much as I can! Look forward to reading anything by this amazing author!

I read this book 3 times to completely be sure I would pass the certification test. Though the book has several typos and grammar problems, the book certainly has some value. After passing this test recently, I can assure you that this book only covers a relatively small portion of the questions I encountered.My suggestion (besides using Flash on a regular basis) is to read more comprehensive books such as "Flash mx 2004 demystified" and "Flash MX 2004 actionscript, training from the source". DO NOT think because you did well with the book's sample test questions that you will have this test aced.

I bought the book - I passed the exam with flying colors! Need I say more? It covers every aspect of Flash, except the more advanced Actionscript stuff, and gives you a good idea what the exam questions are like. The only problem with the book is that it must have been put together in a hurry, because it's loaded with misprints! (spelling, grammar, and at least one of the answers to the sample questions was wrong.) But all in all, a great book!

I'll make this review short and simple:This guide is way too basic and cursory to justify the $30 retail asking price. If you are serious about passing the certification exam, I suggest that you have given a lot of time towards practicing actual Flash while also investing 4-5 days in your local Borders/Barnes & Noble to outline the Designer test material(available at Macromedia.com) from as many resources that you can get your hands on. I'd also recommend the book's multiple choice testt that are available on Forta.com, as they come straight from the book. I'm sitting for the exam in July and I will let everyone know how I did. This book was a breeze and I'm hoping that the exam will be more difficult.

I've been a Flash Web Developer for the last 5 years and this book exposed some really neat tricks that I was unaware of. So if you want to impress your friends, or need help with getting your cert I would suggest you get this study guide. this book is very good. The principles of ballet and applications in a classroom is perfect. This book is essential for teachers and dancers.

My daughter is in her 4th year of ballet with a superb instructor, originally from England, who teaches the Royal Academy of Dancing method. Reading this book satisfied a hunger for detailed information stemming from the plethura of questions that I have had regarding my daughter's training through the years. It covers basics on everything from detailed costume/uniform tips & instructions, to being a superb treatise on technique, vocabulary and practice in class. The book is illustrated with incredible line drawings of technique which better equip me to help my daughter fine-tune her skills (learned in class) at home. The introduction by Joan Lawson is not only educational, but inspiring. This is a MUST HAVE BOOK for any dancer and his/her parents and I am grateful to my daughter's instructor for turning us on to it. My only regret about this book is that we did not find it sooner!
