This is a social history narrative. It is well written and full of interesting information concerning the daily lives of people in the post-colonial period. For example: Chimney's were sometimes cleaned by dropping a chicken down it so the flapping wings would remove built up pitch and creosote. The Justice of the Peace in local villages was responsible for tax collection, inspecting fences, an arrest of individuals accused of crimes. Often, they would only visit offenders and tell them of the accusation and pending trial -they would not follow through with the arrest because it would take people away from daily work which was necessary for the common good of the village. Every farmer rating livestock cut idiosyncratic shapes into their animals ears and those shapes were registered with the county clerk to determine branding/ownership. Learn when houses were first painted, what people did with their trash, traffic jams -yes, there were often traffic jams when someone lost a wagon wheel because roads were crude, narrow and alignment to furrowed wheel ruts where necessary for smooth, efficient travel. It is a refreshing look at this historical period because it doesn't re-hash the standard political and military events which give us a "nationalistic" image of the past. Instead, this book offers what life was like for the common person who was so often disengaged from those concerns because of the base need of simply surviving each day.

Overview This is a 349-page, hardbound book in 6" x 9" format that deals with exactly what the name implies, namely, how everyday life changed in the period from 1790 when George Washington was President to 1840 when William Henry Harrison was running for President on a campaign of "log cabins and cider." It was written in 1988 by Jack Larkin who was then the 45-year-old Chief Historian at Old Sturbridge Village in Massachusetts. His occupation was an excellent background for writing this book, because he is able to reach into the rich resources of that historical village to describe the way ordinary people lived in that 50-year period. He explains that it is his mission to uncover and write about the things that have been taken for granted in everyday life. For example, how did a person travel from Boston to New York in 1790 and how did that change? We learn that if one could afford it, they took the stage coach in 1790. It took 10 or 11 days and cost the equivalent of eight days' wages. Then he goes on to give a detailed description of a stage coach including the perils of such a ride. We read about the crowding of nine people in a small, dark space on three seats, the bumpy ride, the snow whipping through the curtains and the primitive lodgings along the way. The railroad would revolutionize such a trip.Organization The book is organized into seven meaty chapters, each of which focuses on a separate aspect of daily life from typical working conditions, to schooling, to travel and transportation, to simple pleasures and entertainment, to marriage and family customs, and housing arrangements. The book concludes with a rich bibliography of primary sources such as "Domestic Manners of the Americans" written in 1832 by the upper-class Englishwoman, Frances Trollope, as well as excellent secondary sources that the author used for each of his seven chapters. There is also an excellent index. In the middle of the book are inserted a dozen glossy pages which offer excellent, high quality illustrations - maps and reproductions of period paintings. What I found useful My particular interest happens to be "everyday life" in all its richness. I wanted to learn how people dressed, what their houses were like, their courting customs, their religious lives, how they traveled from place to place and so on. The book was richly satisfying in these themes. The author has a gift for recreating a scene so that you feel you are there. For example, when the pianoforte (the precursor of the modern piano) first appeared in American homes around 1800, it caused quite a sensation. First, it was expensive. A good pianoforte cost about $600 or equivalent to the price of a small house in those days. It was a status symbol. Second, for a world accustomed to the simple sounds of a fiddle or flute or drum, the richness of the sounds and the chords was mesmerizing. Young boys would gather under the living room window in the evening to listen to the lady of the household playing this wonderful instrument. It is this recapturing of sights, sounds and smells that I found so enjoyable. What was disappointing Let me confess that I just loved this book. So, the only thing that disappointed me was that I wished the book were twice as long and presented twice as much material.Who might like this book? This is a very accessible, readable book. It is certainly aimed at the general reader. It might be refreshing background reading for a serious professional student of American history, but that is not its forte. Its strength is that it is a lovely read for the general reader who is curious about how everyday people lived when President Washington was in office and the remarkable changes that took place during the first half of the 1800's as American expanded fourfold in population and people began moving to the cities. I give it five stars.

I'll start by saying that this book does include interesting and useful information about the everyday lives of the people of this time. But I'll also say that I had to kick in my internal "BS filter" on many occasions while reading this book. Several times I nearly stopped reading it. It's not that the book is blatantly inaccurate (although I would question a number of points), it's more along the lines of the author writing with a specific agenda or "message" in mind. That's not why I read history. I want the author out of the manuscript--I expect transparency on the part of the writer. Unfortunately, in too many places, it's simply not the case with this book.Again, there IS useful and fascinating info in the book--that's why I bothered to finish reading it. I think overall, the bulk of the book is useful and interesting. But this author clearly has an "angle" as he writes this book. I'm not going to get into the specific politics or "message," but it's clearly there if you know how to read critically. There is a clear social and political bias. The author mainly does this with two "tools": the first is that he overemphasizes certain aspects of social behavior at the time by using hyperbole (mainly). I can't count the number of times I rolled my eyes, and on more than one occasion I laughed aloud--yeah, funny... but then I'm not reading the book to be amused. At times it seems I was reading about a nation populated with reality show contestants or a bunch of vicious slobs. If some of what the author states were as commonplace as he leads us to believe, we wouldn't have a country today. He tends to take things or situations that did indeed exist in the "micro" and present it as widespread and common. The second thing he does to bias the presentation is "cherry pick" his sources. On reading it, you'll notice that he quotes from diaries and writings of a very few individuals through the whole book (largely). Sure, those sources are probably worth including, but I contend that he picked them mainly to shape the views of the text (and thus the reader). I know for a fact that diaries and journals were not all that uncommon and that the literacy rate at the time was not so abysmal that we cannot find textual accounts of the time through different "lenses" than those presented. He most often presents famous writers or travellers of the time. Nothing wrong with that, but there needs to be far more "common man/woman" perspective, and far less social agenda perspective that certainly appears in the quotes he includes. It would be similar to including a history of today sourced mainly by political activists, Hollywood types, and politicians... while leaving out any perspective from the everyday citizen. Don't get me wrong, there IS some perspective from the everyday citizen, but it is highly stilted in the other direction. And at times, even the quotes from the average citizen are quotes from an activist of the time or someone writing to make a point rather than describing their lives or times in total. So, overall, this book is a mixed bag. I think it's worth reading if you are interested in that time. Just be willing to filter it as you go, because if you've been taught to read critically at all on any level, the lens that Mr. Larkin is writing through is quite clear. I gave it three stars: fives stars for the actual unbiased information (and to be fair, there is some in there) and one star for the political/social posturing. Thing is, these people have been dead for two hundred years, so they can't come back and set the record straight. You can paint them any color you like, and I would have preferred a more transparent presentation.

This is not an ordinary memoir of a globe-trotting family. Perhaps because of the tragedy the family faces, this memoir achieves a depth and weightiness that sets it apart from other titles in the genre. As a former globe-trotting mother myself, I felt a kinship with Dalton-Bradford. She is warm and personable, making you feel you could dash off an email to her in response to a passage and have a meaningful conversation about it.Melissa Dalton-Bradford does an admirable job of distilling years of experiences into a few pages covering critical ex-pat experiences like daycare, international and local schools, culture clashes, language acquisition, bureaucracy, navigating medical systems and pharmacies, food, giving birth, friendship, job transfers, etc. She writes of these things with small anecdotes, often hilarious, but always insightful and cohesive.Dalton-Bradford articulates far more deftly than I have ever been able to express the wonder and privilege of such a globe-trotting lifestyle. She does not, however, gloss over the real costs of the same lifestyle--the rootlessness, the relentless loss, and the curious experience of feeling a stranger in one's own country.Perhaps the greatest feat of the book is how the heaviest and most painful of topics-the death of the Bradford's eldest son just days after beginning university-is integrated into the narrative without being choppy or derailing the book. Indeed the candor and dignity with which Dalton-Bradford expresses her grief and the struggle to move forward in such a painful landscape (almost like an entirely new country) was deeply and profoundly moving.I found the typos in the original edition distracting and frustrating--though I think a new edition has been printed and I believe that it has been better proof-read. While Bradford's prose is beautiful and elegant, I found it distracting at times-causing me to lose track of the story. I loved the foreign phrases which were scattered throughout the text, but they weren't always translated which made me feel like an outsider and missing critical parts of the text. Many of the chapter titles were foreign phrases and I think a translation should have been provided as well underneath the title. I also wish the chapters about Singapore and Asia had been expanded. That section of the book felt too cursory and brief.Who should read this book? People who want to travel or have ever wondered what it is like to actually live in a foreign country. People who are preparing for an international move. Expat families who are looking for sources to help validate their experiences. Anyone who is coping with grief would also benefit from this book. I will be sharing this book with my family to help them gain a deeper understanding of my own experiences living in three different foreign countries for 7 years.

Get cozy with tissue. This book will envelop you. You will wish you lived her life abroad with her family. It is a very refreshing take on the global culture of parenting and what makes each individual mother strong across the globe. I fell in love with Melissa and her family and believe she has an even strong message ahead of her. You will love this book. It tugs at your heart and leaves you with a stronger sense of the importance of parenting and the effect one family has on the world.

Waiting for the perfect moment to immerse myself in it, I knew I would love this book…for Melissa’s story parallels my story at some point. But I did not realize how much I would glean and grow from her gifted ability to rein the reader into her international world. I hungered for more as each page flew beneath my fingers, and even more as she described the experiences of tasting all the delicacies the world palate has to offer. Knowing the ending before I started…Melissa still beautifully moved me with her masterful portrayal of living joyfully with the unexpected realities life brings. You don’t have to be a global mom or even any kind of a mom to thoroughly love this book.

Global Mom: A Memoir is a book about identity and what it means to negotiate the sometimes competing influences of career, marriage, motherhood and ultimately self across cultural, ethnic and national boundaries. Global Mom traces Melissa Dalton-Bradford's journey as she seeks to find a place in several different societies, while building a family.Through anecdotes and insights, this book shares the values that help form the Bradford family as they are amplified by, and sometimes (humorously) collide with, local cultures. These stories, sometimes witty and sometimes poignant, convey the interplay between their family and the deep-rooted cultural values of the societies they negotiate. They also tell of the different ways societies have of bringing people together, both to celebrate life and to mourn loss. Even the act of entering and beginning to work within a new culture is an act of community. Dalton-Bradford writes of her experience in Norway, "It assumes commitment and consistency on the part of both the newcomer as well as the native community at large."She also writes of personal insights such as tender moments with children, "There are those minutes in life, which you ache to redo or even, if by magic, somehow inhabit again." Repeatedly, she and her family are plunged into different settings with different languages and different rules--each of which could either be just a brief stay or a permanent move. During a short relocation back in the USA she reveals, "I ached for a place where we could be who we all had been individually and as a family, for that special roughness and refinement of a vibrantly textured international setting."Global Mom is for those venturing into living abroad or learning from one who has, but it is also for those who enjoy humor and irony in changing life circumstances and who want to gain a deeper understanding of self through encountering that which is foreign.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of September 2018:: It takes an ambitious historian to write a single volume history of the United States: Enter Jill Lepore, Harvard historian and New Yorker staff writer. These Truths sets out first to remind people how the United States got its start. The “truths,” as Thomas Jefferson called them, were political equality, natural rights, and the sovereignty of the people. But Lepore also notes that history is a form of inquiry, something to be questioned, discussed, disputed. Has this country lived up to These Truths? she asks. The answer, as you might expect, is yes and no (though more yes than no). And the book itself is engrossing and even-handed, examining our contradictions—like a land of liberty supporting slavery—and singling out important historical figures, some well-known—like Benjamin Franklin—as well as others who were key voices in their time, but have since been left on history’s curb—like Mary Lease, leading voice of the People’s Party. As the book traces wars, policy decisions, and national debates, one can’t help but feel that the arguments we are seeing today have been carried out all throughout our history. When the final chapter (America, Disrupted) brings us to Obama, and then Trump, the narrative has lost no steam—rather, it has coalesced into a national story approaching coherence, something resembling the Founding Fathers’ more perfect union, though never actually perfect. --Chris Schluep, Amazon Book Review

“[B]rilliant…insightful…It isn’t until you start reading it that you realize how much we need a book like this one at this particular moment.” - Andrew Sullivan, New York Times Book Review“This sweeping, sobering account of the American past is a story not of relentless progress but of conflict and contradiction, with crosscurrents of reason and faith, black and white, immigrant and native, industry and agriculture rippling through a narrative that is far from completion.” - New York Times Book Review, Editors' Choice“[Lepore’s] one-volume history is elegant, readable, sobering; it extends a steadying hand when a breakneck news cycle lurches from one event to another, confounding minds and churning stomachs.” - Jennifer Szalai, New York Times“Jill Lepore is an extraordinarily gifted writer, and These Truths is nothing short of a masterpiece of American history. By engaging with our country's painful past (and present) in an intellectually honest way, she has created a book that truly does encapsulate the American story in all its pain and all its triumph.” - Michael Schaub, NPR“Lepore’s brilliant book, These Truths, rings as clear as a church bell, the lucid, welcome yield of clear thinking and a capable, curious mind.” - Karen R. Long, Newsday“An ambitious and provocative attempt to interpret American history as an effort to fulfill and maintain certain fundamental principles…Lepore is a historian with wide popular appeal, and this comprehensive work will answer readers’ questions about who we are as a nation.” - Booklist (starred review)“This thought-provoking and fascinating book stands to become the definitive one-volume U.S. history for a new generation.” - Library Journal (starred review)“With this epic work of grand chronological sweep, brilliantly illuminating the idea of truth in the history of our republic, Lepore reaffirms her place as one of one of the truly great historians of our time.” - Henry Louis Gates Jr., Harvard University“Astounding…[Lepore] has assembled evidence of an America that was better than some thought, worse than almost anyone imagined, and weirder than most serious history books ever convey.” - Casey N. Cep, Harvard Magazine“In her epic new work, Jill Lepore helps us learn from whence we came.” - O, The Oprah Magazine

A nightmare of whopper errors of fact plus errors of interpretationThis book has been heavily touted. That makes it all the more disconcerting to see an error as early as page 8 and a whopper to boot.Indeed, beyond that as representative of numerous errors of fact, there’s numerous arguable errors of interpretation, and dubious decisions what to contain and what to omit.Behind THAT, as Gertrude Stein said of Oakland, as far as I can tell, there’s no “there” there. With that, let’s dig in.Page 8: No, pre-Columbian American Indians did NOT herd pigs because there were none in the New World!18: Contra Lepore, plenty of plants went from New World to Old, and quickly became common parts of Old World diets. Tomatoes, potatoes, sweet potatoes, maize and chiles are the obvious ones.33: Kind-of sort-of on the Virginia Colony. Its original grant went to today’s Canadian border on the coast; a reformulation in 1609 changed that. Hence the worries of the Separtists fears of settling in Plimouth in 1620, even though they had no charter from the crown for anywhere.By page 45 or so, I realized that I would find little to nothing in the book in the way of facts that were new to me.So, I started skipping and grokking. (Flame me, those who will.)116ff. Ignores larger background of Shays Rebellion, and issues related to this in the Washington Administration, ie, the promissory notes for land offered to veterans, speculation on them and repurchase, etc.145: America had political factions, and alliances, of various sorts long before federalists and anti-federalists. And the Founders knew that. 1790s newspapers did not spring parties into being, and the Founders should have known that.World War I take? Wasting pages on Germany being criticized by fundamentalists for higher criticism, and making that the intro to Bryan and Scopes, with almost zero coverage of the controversy over entry into the war itself, and Bryan’s time as Secretary of State? Horrible. As for Wilson’s health, he arguably had at least one mild-moderate stroke, and more than one mini-strokes or TIAs, a few years before the War.242: Polk couldn’t have “wanted to acquire Florida,” as the U.S. had acquired it all by 1821242: Russia had renounced its Oregon claims by the time Polk became President. Spain had in the Adams-Onis treaty sidebars, and thus, any later Mexican claims (contra Lepore, there surely weren’t) would be rejected by the US anyway.250: No, the Mexican War boundary line did NOT end up at the 36th parallel of latitude after Polk allegedly gave up on seeking the 26th parallel. El Paso is at the 32nd parallel. The Mexico-California border is approximately 32°30’. Also, I’ve never seen claims that Polk wanted Mexico down to the 26th parallel. Indeed, Polk even specifically mentions the 32nd parallel in his December, 1847 State of the Union. (I'll put a URL in comments, because AMAZON!)(I jumped back here after moving ahead to WWI, as she said little about Spanish settlement in today’s Southwest. She had little more on New Mexico of wartime Mexico’s possession.)Even worse, on her Polk land-seeking claims, this heavily footnoted book had NO footnotes.406: No, most the world did NOT support “free trade” before WWI.408: No, the 1924 immigration bill did not make immigrant proportional to current (of that time) population. It went back to the ethnic numbers of the 1890 Census.410: I see no need to put “illegal alien” in scare quotes after first reference.450: Doesn’t mention FDR playing a behind-the-scenes role in the defeat of Upton Sinclair. Doesn’t even mention that he refused to publicly endorse him. Doesn’t mention that he tried to get Sinclair to drop out and that support was offered to GOP incumbent Merriam when he refused.452: No, the American PR factory was not democracy’s answer to fascism. In the US, it goes back at least as far as Teddy Roosevelt. And LePore even mentions Emil Hurja’s pre-1933 work. David Greenberg has the correct answers on all of this in “Republic of Spin." (I'll put a URL in comments, because AMAZON!)548: AFL-CIO (and big biz) opposed Truman’s national health care plan, not just AMA. The unions saw health insurance as a recruiting tool.717: Given that Bush v Gore was the apotheosis of a further rightward shift of the Supreme Court, it gets short shrift.Basically, after I got a little way into the book, I began wondering what her intended audience was, and what her angle was. I had in mind something like Howard Zinn’s book. Zinn had several errors of interpretation, but he had an interpretive focus. With LePore, as noted, it seems to be no “there” there, per Gertrude Stein. Yes, she goes intellectual with the extended references to John Locke. Yes, she goes deep history with several pages about Magna Carta (without telling you it was honored by English kings more in the breach than the observance up to the time of Charles I).Then I realized: Her target audience is readers of the New Yorker plus non-social science batchelor’s level Harvard grads or something like that. Socially liberal — the repeated las Casas references as an example — but not economically leftist or close.Wikipedia says: She has said, "History is the art of making an argument about the past by telling a story accountable to evidence".I’m still not sure what argument she was trying to make in the whole book. I eventually grew tired of trying to figure it out.I did learn tidbits and things, and learn enough about Lepore's writing, not to one-star it. Plus, I thought a two-star review would be less easily dismissed. That is, until Amazon being Amazon refused to accept the initial review because it had URLs in the body of the review. So, Amazon, one-starred it here because of THAT!

The book is mediocre , not a scholarly work, it has many alternative facts, that is a plethora of incorrect events. For example, Jan Karski who alerted the West of the Holocaust based on his intruding wearing an Ukrainian guard uniform into the extermination camp of presumably Belzec. He was never a 'Sociaiist detainee who escaped the concentration camp.' Instead he was a Polish resistance messenger who after the war was a professor at Georgetown University. Also, the author seems ignorant of the existence of killing centers of extermination of only Jews such as Belzec, Treblinka and Sobibor, contrary to her statement that only of concentration camps, Auschwitz was the only one for the extermination of Jews. Of the estimated 6 million Jewish victims an estimated 20 percent were killed in Auschwitz.. She may want to take a course on Holocaust history including the successful revolt in Sobibor.. . Beyond my couple of examples, much of the book is flawed with similar errors or misinterpretation of basic facts The book needs to be cleaned . I expect more objectivity.I agree with another reviewer that such glaring errors on basic facts are unbecoming from a Harvard history professor. Oddly, in her book's acknowledgment, she thanked several " … who checked facts, saving me from many an error." She ought to depend on herself to check the facts ! This is not a history of the United States, but the author's personal interpretation/opinion of it ,which may explain her horrendous alternative of facts. I suspect that those who praised the book, may no t have read the book, and instead are friends of her who were begged by her to endorse her book's cover. Avoid the book. A bit about this reviewer;I am the Holocaust survivor credited as the pioneer of the presidential televised debates as well as many other contributions to the country, cited in the US house of Representatives and in the prologue to the last presidential debate in Las Vegas in 2016 by the Commissioner on Presidential debates. Many have complimented me, citing that I altered the presidential campaigns with starting the conversation on presidential televised debates then endorsed personally by Eleanor Roosevelt. I survived the Holocaust , served in the U.S. military during the Korean war period and Manyland State task forces to implement Holocaust education. I understand that I am simply an immigrant who has sincerely contributed to the country in many ways, even today still as a volunteer at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum and managing the yahoo worldwide group 'Remember_The_Holocaust."

Jill Lepore has gifted us with a superbly told history of the United States. Filled with exciting tales and a lyrically told history, it's an important read that's also an absolute joy to delve into. Don't let the page count deter you, from the first page, Lepore will grab your attention—hold tight, because she doesn't let go. This is how American history was meant to be shared and it's an important book for the age we find ourselves in, especially as we become frustrated with the present and begin to think it can't get any worse. Enjoy!

Lepore states, "The universe was created about fourteen billion years ago, according to the traces left behind by meteors and the afterlives of stars, glowing and distant, blinking and dim." The age of the universe has nothing to do with meteors and the afterlives of stars. Its age is inferred from: the expansion of the universe discovered by Lemaitre and later extrapolated back to the origin, consisting of a single quantum; the 3 K background glow, the residual of the big bang; and the relative abundance of the elements. I fear that Lepore, in attempting to encompass the entire United States history in a single book, may have devoted to it insufficient time to get the facts right.

About the Author

Wayne Bernhardson first traveled to Patagonia in 1979, visiting both Chile and Argentina as far as Tierra del Fuego, "the uttermost part of the earth," and has returned to the region almost every year since 1990. He also spent a year walking, sailing, and flying around the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas) and had the pleasure of revisiting them to research this book. He owns an apartment in Buenos Aires, near the Palermo botanical gardens, and spends four to five months in the "Southern Cone" countries every year.Wayne earned his PhD in geography at the University of California, Berkeley, but abandoned academia for a perpetual Latin American road trip that many university faculty envy. He is the author of Moon guides to Argentina and Chile, and has written for magazines and newspapers including Trips, the San Francisco Chronicle, the American Geographical Society's Focus, Business Traveler, Dupont Registry Tampa Bay, Postcards, National Geographic Traveler, Latin Trade, and Travel Holiday. He often gives lectures on destinations he covers in his books. When not in South America, Wayne resides in Oakland, California, with his wife, María Laura Massolo, their daughter, Clio Bernhardson-Massolo, and their Alaskan malamute, Malbec (named for Argentina's signature red wine).

First became aware of the Patagonia from Bruce Chatwin’s book in the late 1970s. My own experiences with the area dates back over 30 years ago, when I started to travel regularly to the Southern Cone, including a stint of four years living in Buenos Aires. Most of my exploring was limited to the northern Patagonia of Argentina and Chile. I wish that I had had this guide to facilitate a broader firsthand appreciation of the region. The guide has compelling photos and text to lure you combined with the practical details required to have successful explorations. A good number of options are provided, many of a rigorous sort involving hiking, but very relevant for the adventurous types likely to be drawn to the region to begin with. Appreciate the extensive gateway chapters, which alone would warrant an extended stay in Buenos Aires and Santiago. As well, that of the Falklands/Malvinas for the truly adventurous types!

Good map, a little bit difficult to read.

We are living in the great age of travel, and Patagonia is one of the ultimate travel destinations of our time. Wayne Bernhardson, an erudite writer who knows the region like few others, has once again produced an outstanding book with this fifth edition of his classic guide. Approaching his subject from both the Chilean and the Argentine side, he conveys the splendors of finis terrae with a keen eye and deft prose. Practical and literate, this 600-page book has all you need if you want to retrace of the steps of Charles Darwin, Bruce Chatwin and Paul Theroux . From what to aim for in Torres del Paine ( said to be one of the top three national parks in the world) to what to do in Buenos Aires ( one of the gateways to Patagonia) it is all there. His one-page description of the travails of Evita Perón's remains around the world alone is a small gem. If you have never thought of visiting Patagonia, reading this book will make you book the tickets right away and experience its magificent solitude. Jorge Heine

Great guide to the major and minor corners of Patagonia, chock-a-block with maps and photos, and with an excellent bibliography. All a reflection of the author's four decades traversing the region. Best of all, no wi-fi or battery required, just open the book and read.

This is_the_guide for anyone interested in travel to the Southern Cone of South America, particularly Patagonia and the Falkland Islands (Malvinas in Spanish). As a fellow scholar of the region, I had already read all 800+ pages of Bernhardson's exhaustive PhD dissertation on the history, ecology and geography of the Falklands. Here, with the latest edition of the Moon Patagonia book, Bernhardson has applied a similarly rigorous approach to provide a far more accessible and practical overview of key sites of interest in both the Argentine and Chilean sides of Patagonia, as well as the Falklands. This book is a true gem. Highly recommended!

The Book is a complete implementable package. Lots of books have lots of tricks but when we really try them, its difficult to implement but the observations included in this book can easily be used. A must have for mathematics lovers and those who are preparing for competitive exams. Nice efforts by author.

Be a Human Calculator is (as one would predict from the title) a Math book. I was interested in finding out if it could deliver and I was quite surprised with the material inside. The language is fairly simple (even if you’re from a social science field) and it’s easy to understand how it works. Obviously, it won’t replace a calculator but you get to learn a few amounts of tricks that will ease the process and make arithmetic a lot more simple to do. Rajesh Sarwast was a respected Mathematics teacher, so he knows what he’s talking about. There’s also something about the language used that reminds you that he used to teach. Mathematics can be scary, but in this book, it sounds more like a game or a competition, so it is quite entertaining for anyone who’s into brain teasers and logic games.

Be A Human Calculator by Rajesh Sarswat makes math easy. In a nutshell, you will quickly learn to do math calculations like never before. Many people claim to be a human calculator, but few actually are; if you are struggling with serious math exams, or just want to brush up on your math, this is the perfect. With a table of contents at the beginning of the book, Sarswat lays out what to expect in the book. This in itself is a handy reference. He begins with the more simple calculations that even the novice can appreciate and moves on to more hardcore math problems for serious math aficionados. This is a must read if you are preparing for any type of intensive math exam, but will help those who are looking to brush on their math skills as well. This is also a great book to refer to over and over again. Highly recommend.

Some may find this book useless - who needs to find the square root of 34,284? But this book can actually make all the difference in passing that difficult class or doing better at work. Be a human calculator is all about training your brain to solve those equations that you once thought you needed a calculator for. The information is presented in an easy to understand way that makes is possible to digest the material, often times this is unlike traditional math books. If you are struggling to pass a math class or find yourself in a career that requires you to think on your feet, this book can be a game changer in how you think about math. Put the calculator away and begin solving equations on your own time.

This is a math book for students who have already learned the basics, but want to be able to get to the answers in a way without as much writing and calculating on paper. I would not recommend it to students who are struggling with the basics in fact finding as they need a strong foundation before they can benefit from these strategies and methods. These are not tricks to impress peers (though it might). These are patterns and strategies that can give math students a way of solving for answers without writing out long problems in small spaces. It can shorten time which can be an advantage during testing and assessments. There are strategies for basic math like adding and subtracting, but also ways to identify percentages and square root. Even algebra like factoring polynomials and solving equations have methods that are clearly explained and diagrammed step by step without being too lengthy or boring or even over the heads of students. Every method comes with an exercise portion to practice these strategies at a variety of difficulties. There is also a time frame given for the exercises so that students can see if they can complete them using the calculator in their heads. As mentioned before, students with a good understanding of math concepts can benefit, if not enjoy, this book and its methods. Gifted students can try it out the methods to see if they work consistently and if they can improve their time from traditional practices.

I am not very strong at maths and my enthusiasm for the subject is very low. So, with my dislike and weakness in maths I tried to be very open-minded while reading this book. Reading about maths in “Being a Human Calculator” was easy to follow. There were tips and shortcuts to help you digest and understand formulas and intricate workings. Of course, you must have a strong foundation in the workings of maths to be able to master the techniques. The book is also more geared to those who participate in competitions as the tips help you to increase speed and accuracy. I think for those who must master maths this book would be most helpful.

A wonderful book that I will reread many times!! I am a student and I love math, but I have always had a problem with a quick count of difficult equations. The book "Be a Human Calculator" is a real discovery for me. I read with pleasure and could not stop. All examples of algebraic equations are well and simply explained, you don’t need to be a math teacher to understand how to do it.Rajesh Sarswat is a true professional, and I am very pleased to read and learn new knowledge of a person who has spent many years of his life creating his own technique.I believe that by reading the “Be a Human Calculator” I’ve got useful skills and will improve them. Thanks to the author for such a unique work and for giving students and ordinary people a “key” to mathematics. I recommend everyone to read the book! I have a desire now to read other books by the author.

This is a book filled with math tips and short cuts to help you become quick at solving math problems. The methods are easy to learn and are effective in several types of mathematical problems. When used properly, these easy to learn short cuts will dramatically improve your math skills and ability to calculate using only your memory and mind. I found this to be an easy read that has some very educational value and is a good study guide for anyone getting ready for testing or competition or someone who is just interested in speed math solving skills. Check this book out. It will help your math speeds

Great Book

If you are limited to an HPLC without MS detection or any of the other bells and whistles, this book is a great resources. It goes over how to develop and optimize HPLC methods with an emphasis on separation, rather than selective detection.I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a down to earth practical guide to HPLC.

Great book! It can solve my most practical problems. I would highly recommend it to entry-level or junior-level chemists.

great product!!!

Like the title, it's a detailed practical guide for HPLC. Very usedful. And brought as a used book, half the price, in almost new condition, a good bargain.

This is the best book of which I know, on the development of HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatographic) separations. However, there have been important changes in HPLC since this edition, especially with smaller diameter particles for packing materials.I wish Wiley would prod the authors on an update.

I find this book to be a valuable reference book on HPLC. I work extensively with HPLC and I can always rely on it to provide the in-depth explanations of what's going on. It covers all aspects of method development, form deciding where to start and figuring out what's going wrong, to finishing the method and validating it, although the validation chapter is just an overview. As of 2007, it's still relatively up to date, regarding new column technologies and latest practices.I really recommend this book, if it's your first time developing a method or if you're a seasoned professional, you will find many useful chapters in the book.

This is a very useful reference to have if you work extensively on HPLC. I find its of more use to understand concepts ...there is a lot of information here.Which means - if you are looking for a solution to a problem and you want to research separation theory - a great book.If your looking for a quick fix to an HPLC problem - not as good. This is a detailed, extensive and well written text on HPLC Method development - wish there was more on validation here though.
