This volume has the most expert and comprehensive illustrations of the highest quality of any comparable production to date.

Book was delivered in great condition.

Rather than translating the Book of the Dead, Journey Through the Afterlife analyzes its contents and its context. Chapters by various authors describe how the Book of the Dead (BD) developed, how it was produced, who used it (most Egyptians couldn't afford a copy), and how it fit in with other Egyptian preparations with the afterlife. Several more chapters describe the themes in the BD itself, and the overall picture of the afterlife that it draws.Because Journey Through the Afterlife doubles as a catalogue for a British Museum exhibit, 161 capsule descriptions of artifacts from the exhibit are interspersed with the chapters. Most of them are sections from various BD papyri, photographed in very great detail. The rest are various objects related to death and burial—mainly coffins, amulets, and other burial goods. It's a real wealth of information, and surprisingly cheap for a book with such expensive, photo-quality pages.A few years after this book was published, the University of Chicago produced a volume covering much of the same ground, Book of the Dead: Becoming God in Ancient Egypt. It is, if possible, even better than this book, though less focused on the basics of Egyptian funerary practices and with more detail on some technical subjects.If you want a translation of the BD, look at one of the Raymond Faulkner editions. Ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead is solid, but the best option is the Chronicle edition of the Papyrus of Ani, which has introductory sections on the nature of the BD and, most importantly, a commentary for every spell in Ani's papyrus (about half the total number of BD spells, including most of the essential ones). Reading Journey Through the Afterlife and Becoming God in Ancient Egypt together with The Papyrus of Ani would give a pretty thorough understanding of the Book of the Dead.

This is an unbelievable bargain as a book. Sumptuous, thorough, full of the most exquisite pictures and definitive articles. I have no idea how they can sell this book and make any money out of it. It is completely stunning, a triumph of the museum art. Page after page of the best the British Museum has to offer (and, really, that is as good as it gets).If you have the slightest interest in Egyptology or have been seduced by various "Books of the Dead" (I was weaned on Wallis Budge) buy this book.

An opinion by the author not a fact. A statement on how to read the Ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead? Maybe, but I am not sure what I am learning here from the book. But the pictures are nice. Another book: The Fourth Sapphire Tablet of M. Tuthamenhaten has some information to appreciate and the foreword about Toth and the afterlife is just something out of here.

And that was mostly just a reprisal of Charles Duhigg's book: The Power of Habit.Points go to Brett McKay for his tongue-in-cheek attitude and sardonic treatment of porn as an addiction. He was persuasive using research, logic, and humor (albeit he used a logical fallacy in the humor, it was still funny).It gets 4 stars because the price is reasonable, Brett is funny, it was decently researched, and it gave some really great practical tools in a very small package. (About 80 pages)

It presents great conversation pieces for spouses/partners, friends & family, and community discussions, not to mention classrooms.If you like this book, do not miss the opportunity to read the editors' original anthology, 'Love, InshAllah' which can also be found on Amazon (kindle and paperback).A few things about this book were particularly powerful for me:-The diversity, inclusiveness, and realness of experiences: people who were raised Muslim, converts, immigrants and ‘non-immigrants’, and people of various racial backgrounds, sexual orientations, degrees of religious practice, etc.-This book challenges very core understandings and constructions of masculinity that in turn are used to justify patriarchy. I hope the 50+ stories presented in both of these anthologies helps to challenge the monolithic narrative created and perpetuated around/about/by Muslims.

Such a gift to read these stories that are kept really hush-hush in our communities. I really appreciate that the editors curated a diverse set of stories, because this could have easily read as the same story over-and-over. Masha Allah to all the editors and contributors, because it takes gall to publish something like this! As a Muslim woman, I have a totally new and intimate perspective of an interesting set of Muslim men. My favorite story is "A Pair of Photos".

I think it was a good idea to continue the project with stories from the man's side. It is difficult to review the collection because all the authors were different.Although most literature in the world has been written by men, I nonetheless felt like I gained more insight into the male mind. Some of the stories were also sensitive and some stayed in my mind.One main thing that stayed in my mind after reading it was how much unspoken social privilege the men had, compared to the social pressures many Muslim women face. For instance, a young man loses his virginity accidentally and feels bad about it, but it doesn't have any ramifications on his life, reputation, or chances of starting a family. Another man cheats on his wife but gets to keep his wife, and the only one who loses out is the girlfriend. (I found that story particularly one sided - she is basically demonized for seducing him, whereas last time I checked, adultery is a two-way street, and he speaks about what drove him away from his wife but not about what he must have been doing to push her away. However it makes me wonder if in the eschelon of society that some of the authors in, or perhaps their generation, had some sort of social mechanism that discouraged maturity. (After all, 30 is the new 20 now.) Of course, I would reiterate this is not the case for all of them,but it was another impression.Anyway I do think it was a good idea to put the book together and it gave me food for thought.

This book is like a breath of fresh air, finally bringing us the stories of Muslim men in America we so rarely hear. Some of the stories may start to sound a little repetitive, but overall I found them all interesting and engaging. Some of them quite deep and thoughtful, as well as heartfelt.

Not only finding a Women of the same religion, but thewomen often must be from the same culture, country, and have the approval of the man'sfamily. I am gladread this book and I have now finished Love, Inshallah about American Muslim Women seeking love.

I thoroughly enjoyed this anthology, a collection of stories from 22 men revealing their unvarnished truths. Men are not often known, stereotypically, for sharing their feelings and thoughts on intimate matters such as love and longing, and Muslim men, less so. These are much needed stories to add to the American discourse to help break stereotypes and to explore human truths. These are not all feel-good stories, the men discuss things ranging from blissful courtship, to infidelity, infertility, and the pain of loneliness and spiritual struggles. I enjoyed the stories and the insights they gave and will be handing them out as gifts this year. A must read.
