About the Author
Jane McAlevey has been an organizer in the labor and environmental justice movements for the last twenty years. She is a contributing writer at The Nation magazine. Her articles can be found in a variety of progressive journals and magazines. She is currently working on a second book and is a frequent commentator on radio and TV shows. She is a PhD candidate at CUNY Graduate Center and lives in the San Francsico Bay Area.Bob Ostertag is the co-author of Raising Expectations (and Raising Hell) and author of People's Movements, People's Press: The Journalism of Social Justice Movements and Creative Life: Music, Politics, People, and Machines. He has also published two movies and over twenty CDs of music, and covered the Central American civil wars as a journalist. He currently teaches at UC Davis and lives in San Francisco.From the Hardcover edition.

One of the smartest most articulate writers I've ever read on the topic of working class consciousness and labor organizing. I cannot recommend this book highly enough: for leftists, for workers, for union organizers, for political scientists, for economists with a brain.Beautifully written, cogently argued, deeply felt.
Important stuff. As a former organizer for an International Union I was consistently confronted with many of the dynamics and situations at issue in McAlevey's book - both good and some very, very bad. I deeply appreciate reading such a thoughtful analysis of many themes I have thought of and discussed, now a rank-and-filer fighting for union democracy in a corrupt and unresponsive local union. This book is very necessary.Her experiences are educational for anyone looking to organize for the betterment of working people's lives. If I had had someone like McAlevey to work for, I might still be doing the sometimes very powerful, good work of field organizing. She reminds me why I left and also how much I miss it. I'm revitalized for my constant fight in the shop for democracy and power.Thanks, Jane! Solidarity.
A gripping narrative that advocates a philosophy of political action. Five stars for weaving together narration and philosophy in a compelling way. I see another reviewer staunchly disagrees with the author and has bad things to say about her. I have no idea if his critique is based on fact or if it's sour grapes since he's an SEIU organizer and SEIU gets the brunt of McAlevey's barbs. But personal stuff aside, there's tremendous value in the articulation of the idea of deep organizing or whole person organizing, where the context of organizing goes beyond the workplace and deals with the community and the political environment. If you'd like to see the middle class make a comeback, you shouldn't miss out on an exploration of these ideas. And it's fun to read.
Jane's book was recommended to me by a friend who used to work with her. I found it so compelling that I've since gifted the book to three people. If you're interested in the future of the American labor movement, read this book. Jane's experiences make for interesting reading, but the lessons of her time at SEIU are the crucial element.
Jane McAlevey is bright and knows what she is talking about. Organizing workers is more important today than ever. If you aren't in a union, especially in health care, read this and start organizing.

Jane McAlevey clearly spells out the reasons for unions, the abuses of some union officials, and how to organize and get people involved. In these times of union-bashing, this is a must-read book about organizing the right way and making workers aware of organizing for their own best interest. Corporations are making a fortune and want to keep all the money for themselves, that's why unions were started in the first place. Walmart if a prime example of why we still need unions and why corporations are fighting with every thing they have to quash workers from joining. I'm the proud daughter of a union father who fought for decent wages, medical care for families, and humane working conditions. I'll never be able to thank my Dad enough. My continued support of unions is my way of showing my Dad that I appreciate all of the sacrifices he made for our family. I hope that people remember history and the reason we now have the weekends, 40 your work weeks, and more humane working conditions than in the past.
