I owned a copy of this book since I was 12 years old. I had to repurchase it since my old copy disappeared. Mary Pendleton shows in great detail with profuse pictures how to weave in the Navajo and Hopi styles. Many other books show the techniques that established Indigenous weaving masters do, but do not offer advice or "how-to" for readers to try their hand at the process. This is a great book for the collection of anyone who is considering weaving on either type of loom.I recently got my hands on a very large tapestry loom that I have been able to utilize using the techniques that I learned in this book. After decades of dreaming about it and studying the various how-to books, this one will be right next to me while I am working on my own rugs.

Like weaving itself, Navajo and Hopi Weaving Techniques, published in 1974, will never go out of date. Mary Pendleton, a long-time skilled weaver who relocated to Arizona in 1958, explains both techniques in an easily understandable, step-by-step process with abundant close-up photos to illustrate the lessons. With sample patterns, Pendleton takes you, row by row, through the weaving of a rug, a belt and a sash.Like two books in one, this wonderful publication first examines and explains Navajo rug weaving with attention to yarns, spinning and dyeing, turned lock and interlock methods, design and troubleshooting. She also has instructions on building your own loom. The second part, also with details on yarn, spinning, design, troubleshooting, and loom instructions, demonstrates two separate Hopi weaving techniques, warp float weave and embroidery weave.Howard Gorman, member of the Navajo Tribal Council, introduces the first part. This book is still relevant to the art of weaving. I used it to load the first warp on my new Navajo loom and to get the first couple of inches woven. Now I will study it a bit more to start a design. I would buy it again if it were to be printed in colot or made into a video.

I bought this book because I wanted to know about Navajo weaving and if I wanted to take a long, expensive course learning how to do this particular weaving. This book not only explained everything in wonderful detail, it was lovingly historical as well. The teacher/author was extremely experienced and thoughtful and I learned everything I wanted to know regarding the beautiful art as a beginner. And I suspect an advanced weaver would like it just as much.It is detailed but not crazy making so I got everything I needed to make my decision and boy am I glad I got the book. I recommend it to anyone wanting to learn about this cultural weaving technique and the history. It is the best FIRST book regarding this subject you should get.

This is a very well written book that allows an interested person to explore the many varied techniques of Navajo loom weaving. Mary Pendleton has given us an interesting look at old skills with this how-to book.
