The last couple volumes were really fun, and this one was as well.I like how Ryoma just goes for it, he is unashamed of his love for Izumi. Even if he’s a little pushy at times, I mostly just enjoy it. And in this volume, Izumi realizes his own feelings for Ryoma. That leads to some sexy times, as well as some really cute moments. I love how Izumi just threw himself at Ryoma, and Ryoma tried to be respectful when he didn’t know what was going on. Izumi is kind of adorable at times, in the way that he relies on Ryoma, and Ryoma loves it.My only real problem with this volume, is the attempted rape scene. The author tries to make a joke of it at one point, and that was distasteful to me, because it doesn’t change what the characters were doing. But it’s also used as an important moment where Izumi realizes his feelings for Ryoma, and I don’t like that he needed to be assaulted in order for that to happen. I guess I’m happy that he got himself out of the situation, instead of being saved, but otherwise it bothered me.Aside from that, I enjoyed this volume. I like the romance between Izumi and Ryoma. I also enjoy Rei’s character a lot, and enjoyed the little glimpse we got between him and Shogo. Over the past two books, Izumi has come to terms with his burgeoning feelings for Ryoma. I imagine that the typical yaoi fan is something like Ryoma: comfortable with boy/boy interaction because they’re in love with the situation. Me, I sympathize more with Izumi — it’s the feelings and characters that matter to me, and I’m not always comfortable with the more explicit scenes (which have been fairly few so far).Izumi has given in to his fate and accepted that he’s bound to become a celebrity… which usually seems to involve him dressing as a woman. Meanwhile, there’s a lot of publicity interest in actor Ryoma’s “secret lover”. At a press conference, it all comes out.It’s the weird encounters in the world of fame that keep me entertained by this series. Izumi is basically famous for being famous… and for looking good as a member of the opposite sex. I guess it doesn’t take much more to briefly seize the imagination of today’s celeb-conscious culture, and at least super-manager Rei realizes that his lack of talent will eventually become an issue. (Rei is amazing, since he also ends up giving Izumi sex advice! Apparently, he’s a lead character in the spin-off light novel series, where he’s involved with Izumi’s older brother.)The increased attention brings the couple’s feelings for each other out, making them finally confess honestly to each other, although first we get a sequence where Izumi, like Clark Kent, isn’t recognized as being famous so long as he keeps his glasses on. Of course, that trick doesn’t work for long, and some life-threatening danger is apparently just what he needed to be clear for himself about how he feels. I’m not sure where Love Stage!! will go next, as we turn an important corner this installment, but I’m curious to find out more. (Review originally posted at ComicsWorthReading.com.)

Typical manga: Assertive man and submissive man. Love and struggle from partners.Good parts: Super cute, plot is good and interesting, main characters compliment each other, and one is attractive.Bad part: The submissive guy is TOO feminine. They wrote his parts as if he was a girl 87% (made this number up) of the time and he's drawn VERY girly. It's kind of part of the plot, but still. Good yaoi manga.

Another great volume. Izumi is just too adorable for his own good. Can't say I blame Ryoma for going so nuts over him. This volume ends where the anime ends, so I'm eager to see what will happen in the next volume, since it's a complete mystery to me.

Sensei writes such a funny story. And Eiki-sensei draws such yummy illustrations. I can't wait till they make an English translation for Back Stage available for kindle!

I don't want to give you the details of the story. You'll want them to unfold naturally. Suffice it to say that the characters are likeable, the action believable and the storyline smooth and succinct. I really enjoyed it.

Added: I've spent more time with this book and have ordered another one for a family member as a Christmas present. My opinion of the book is even higher than when I first wrote this review.... It's a superb volume.It's about railroading. Yet it's also an historical documentation of the passing of an era, the era of steam locomotion as it transitions quickly to diesel locomotion. It also documents the lives of many who worked for the railroad and who lived beside the railroad in small hamlets, isolated from much of the world at large.I quickly noticed the high quality matte paper. It has very little reflection to direct glare into my aging eyes. Much appreciated in this day and age of glossy books and magazines.As a photographer, I noted the incredible detail of the photos, the composition, the included backgrounds. the careful use of depth-of-field, the exquisite use of artificial lighting. This tome more than does justice to Link's skill and talent at taking photos. The reproduction is first rate. You'll find pleasure in viewing these photos more than once or twice.Link did a marvelous job of taking portraits of the people he met during the course of his years-long project. These are more than 'studio' portraits. They are portraits of the men and women in their element. Again, the photos are nearly perfect in every respect. They are not nameless faces. In nearly all photos, he has also documented their names and their locations. He shows his respect and enjoyment of all of the people he met and worked with during this project.The book includes a number of color photos taken by Link as well. Although color film was limited in many ways in those days, he again proves that he is the master of his medium.The CD is a great bonus, especially so because it matched each track with one of the plates included in the book. If you seek it out, there is a track listing near the back of the book that describes what you're hearing, track by track, and references the plate number of the photo taken where the recording was made.I was especially intrigued by the photos of Link and his equipment. He was able to use engineering training to an extreme extent in developing and customizing equipment needed for his project. I was glad that he and his assistants did indeed document themselves and their equipment.If you've viewed any of Link's works, you know that he worked largely at night so he could light a scene as he desired. As you peruse this book, take special note of the marvelous results he was able to achieve with his lighting. He is the Master of Lighting. Because he knew what he wanted and because he worked hard to achieve what he could see in his mind's eye...I urge you to look at this book, even if you're not a 'railfan' or a devotee of steam. The book is about an era that is now gone and can never be captured as it was by this genius. Just look at the book and savor the many elements that have been presented as a much greater whole. This book deserves a place in your library and deserves your time to read it again and again. I know I'll be back to read it many times.

I already owned "The Last Steam Railroad in America" and "Steam, Steel & Stars: America's Last Steam Railroad," and I took the chance that this book would have enough new material to be a worthwhile purchase. I have been pleasantly surprised. The author of this book does a good job chronicling O. Winston Link's journey of capturing the places, people, and machines of the N&W railroad's twilight of steam operation. While there are duplicate photographs in this book, there are many new photos I have not previously seen. A very valuable bonus is the CD with his audio recordings. I feel that this book has been a welcome addition to my collection.

I admit to being a bit of a train buff. I was familiar with Winston Link's work and this book did not disappoint. His more famous photographs are included, but there are prints I had not previously seen as well. It is a very comprehensive collection. The reproductions are of superb quality and the paper is thick. Anybody who knows what Mr Link attempted to do understands that he captured the last moments of steam trains without benefit of digital technology. This book shows how he used lighting techniques to ensure he got it right. Thanks to him, we can reflect on something we have lost. Not only do we not have these incredible engines, but he also caught the small general stores prior to their demise. He lets us remember a time when kids could go, unwatched and unattended, to a swimming hole in the evening. This book appeals to a broader market than those who enjoy steam engines.

As a railfan in the Eastern US, my friends and I have visited several of the locations in Virginia Winston Link made famous in his work on the Norfolk and Western RR. We have visited the Winston Link Museum in Roanoke. This work, along with "Steam, Steel and Stars," and "The last Steam Railroad ..." makes a rather complete collection of Link's work, and puts the railroad in its human context - the people who worked and took pride in the railroad, and the people who lived and worked in the communities along the line (some stil do!). The photographic craftsmanship is fantastic and stories it tells are priceless. Tony Reevy has continued a remarkable story.

Thoroughly enjoy this remarkable book of Mr. Link's photography. He had an innate perceptive photographers eye that captured the end of Norfolk and Western railroad steam service and the waning of small towns that were served by the railroad.

For readers that are train buffs and fans of Winston Link's work, this is the best collection and narrative I have seen to date. Not only are there some new photos that have been unpublished before, but the narrative is very well researched and clearly written. The final chapter is written by Mr. Link's son, who gives us a vivid picture of the personal side of the photographer, including the story of how his ill-fated second marriage ended in the destruction of much of his work.Do not miss this book. It will stay with you, both in heart and spirit.

There's really not much to say. Own this book, keep it and it will be valuable. O. Winston Link took amazing pictures in the 1950's to save the lore of Steam Locomotives. OWL learned and perfected the ability to take vast night scenes that included HUUUUGE steam locomotives and a foreground. His pictures are iconic and this book has most of them. BUY IT!!

This was purchased as a gift for my son who has become a train enthusiast since moving to Maryland. I didn't read the book so I can't speak to that issue but I can tell you that my son, who is an avid reader is truly enjoying the history and photos in the book, which covers one of the lines that traveled through Maryland. This is a very solid and heavy book that I would think anyone would enjoy.

I ordered this book for my father-in-law who has lived in Portland most of his life. When I looked through it I almost kept it for myself! Great pictures, wonderful content, perfect gift. I like this book because the pictures aren’t outdated. My father-in-law is a hobby photographer and I didn’t want to get him some cheesy photo book.

I got this as a gift for my husband and he loves it. I love looking at it as well! The pictures are fantastic, the book is full of information we knew and more we didn’t. Perfect gift for a local or transplant.

Excellent format of then and now pictures rather than a book of just old pictures. Very good choice of pictures. the book graphically demonstrates how Portland has changed over the years

Brought for my Brother but decided to keep for myself

My mom was born and grew up there. She finally introduced it to me about 10 yrs ago.Caitlin Gable school isn't in here. She lived across the street. (It started with a "W" like Willet or something) That was where she went until UCLA and WWII called her south...where she met my dad after the war, etc. They married and remained here in Tucson until their deaths 7-10 yrs ago.But I always hope I'll find someone who recalls Elizabeth, Constance &/or Harry EDWARD (no S). Granddad had a lumber mill up there. He and my grandmother moved to LA in the 60's then on south until finally living in La Jolla.I wanted some small connection with her. This is a fun, informative, picture plus, thin book. I could imagine Mom among the places and people in the photos. It's well done. I wish I'd had it when my mom was still here!

the pictures are wonderful and it gives great historical information. I gave it as a gift to my daughter who lives in Portland and knows most of the places that are referenced.

Fantastic book. Very interesting and the photos are taken from the same place in different points of time. Good stuff

Maria is a very talented artist who shares her style for creating mandala pebble art in this kit. The kit includes a 63 page small book with a step-by-step demo of creating a mandala inspired by Mehndi design. The book includes gorgeous photography of Maria's pebble art that will give you ideas and tips for creating mandalas with white, gold, and colored variations. I've admired Maria's pebble art for years and her kits gives you a few things to get started making them using her favorite tools (4 metal calligraphy/drawing nibs with a wooden holder) and a couple of pebbles. The two pebbles in my kit were smooth and flat, perfect surfaces for drawing. It would have been helpful to have had some white and black inks included in this kit so you could get started right out of the box. This was a decision of the publisher and I hope they consider in future kits making them more complete. There are many tools and supplies one can use to create mandala art and this kit will get you started making your own.

Strange choices for the kit. Two uninspiring stones, cheep dip pen and nibs. Black and White marker pen would have been more useful. The book is sweet and inspiring and I would have like even more of it.

While I absolutely love the artwork of the author I was disappointed in this. A lot of nice packaging but it was more of a 'kit' than something more substantial. Two little stones, a wooden pen holder and basically a booklet of designs. The designs are exquisite and maybe the price is worth having that to learn from but I'm not sure

It would have been nice to have a sample of the paint/ink included. The rocks are very small but they are nice and smooth.

I got this for a friend who loves rocks and mandalas and she loved it but it doesn't come with ink so I felt bad that I gave her everything- instructions,pen,rock but no ink. It probably says that but I didn't realize it doesn't have everything you need. the rocks were nice though

Very disappointing. Nothing of value in this book other that a couple of pages of how to draw a mandala if you never have. I have used sharpies to make these with a better effect.

What a gigantic waste of money!! You get two black rocks that are irregular, pitted and not suited for this (probably came out of a bag of landscaping rock from Home Depot), a book with about 6 pages of poorly done illustrations on how to create a mandala and the remaining 36 pages is fluff. Then you get a cheap wooden holder for the calligraphy drawing tips. My stupidity for not reading the details because one would think that for that price it would be worthwhile. Nope.- 2 large river stones- 4 metal calligraphy/drawing tips- wooden holder for the metal drawing tips

I felt very lucky to get this book free from Amazon and I have enjoyed every bit of it. I read some of the novels that I grew up with and got a treat to read some that I had never heard of and they are all wonderful. If you are easily offended by old southern racial references then maybe some of his work is not for you but I felt that he did not look down on African Americans because he put the runaway slave Jim on equal footing with Tom and Huck and he wrote from his time in history and it was the norm, the way people of different races interacted at that time. Mark Twain's novels are full of humor and irony, and some very deep insight into the workings of the human spirit and mind. I highly recommend his work to anyone who wishes to enjoy novels from such a changing time and who can appreciate the differences in people but when it all came down to it everybody was the same in the end, according to Mark Twain.

It’s difficult, overall, to find fault with Mark Twain writing all though I suppose some do and reviled by some of the remarks here but then I always say to each is own. For me Twain is one of the best top 10 authors America has produced and with some of his work I would have to say that he is the best...but hey, to each his own.This Kindle edition most certainly has included all of his major novels but of course not his short stories and articles. This is a good thing for me because I know have access to many of the book I have read over and over again. I started reading Twain when I was around 5 years old...well, actually I did not read them my self but rather my mother did, but by the time I graduated from H.S. I had read all these and 70 years later I am still reading them and each time I read them I pick up a bit more.While I have all the novels here in my library It is nice to have these wonderful work while traveling. Both my wife and I have one suite case each for our books and this little kindle most certainly cuts down of the baggage during a long trip.I purchased this version January 2017 and other than a few editorial error I really had no problem with it. I like the fact that it is indexed and you can go right to the work you want.

I've long been an admirer of Mark Twain. Few writers reveal as much of themselves in their work as does Samuel Clemens (Twain). For me, he embodies the American spirit and character in a way that few others do; and "Life on the Mississippi" is Twain at the top of his game. He's a genius at dialogue, recognizes and enjoys the pretensions of people; and will not tolerate hypocrisy. His story-telling technique is wonderful, and he can be very funny. Having said that, Twain's writing can also be uneven, and sometimes a passage of utter beauty can be followed by drivel. That's Twain.I've read that when "Life on the Mississippi" was submitted for publication, Twain's editors thought it was too short, so sent the writer on a trip down the River to reflect on the changes since he had lived there. Twain is Twain, so reading that part of the book is not unpleasant, but it is really just a travel piece that does not begin to rise to the levels of his earlier reflections. Even so, Twain seemed to be aware that he was writing the story of a time and place that was rapidly disappearing; and in that I think he was correct. "Life on the Mississippi" stands as a valuable snapshot of a time, place, and writer that are no more.

Read this book on a rainy weekend, mostly because nothing else to do, and i didn't expect much. I was pleasantly surprised.Excellent. Well researched. Growing up in the west in a railroad town, my knowledge of the River and the boats was limited. I didn't realize the early movement from the east coast was centered North and South along the Mississippi and not straight west as most are led to believe.The author makes the early days come alive.

This is a fun little book that I've recommended to friends. I ordered it for my Kindle based on the enjoyment I got from reading the author's effort on the Erie Canal, and I can't say I was disappointed. I grew up only 20 miles from the Mississippi, but what I didn't know about the Father of Waters could -- and did -- fill a book. I was particularly interested in learning more about the early arrival of steamboats on the Ohio/Mississippi/Missouri river system, how dangerous the travel could be, and how competitive. Certainly Mr. Andrist leans on the experiences and the writing of Mark Twain, but his early experiences as a steamboat pilot go a long way toward explaining just how ever-changing the river could be. Also fascinating to me was the fact that just about anyone could travel by steamboat -- if they were willing to load and unload cargo and help take on wood at every stop. Plus, his accounts of steamboat races had me on the edge of my seat. Talk about a truly dangerous "sport...." In short this is an interesting account of a little bit of Americana that helped settle the heart of the country, but it little covered today. Fortunately, Mr. Andrist helps make up for that.
