This Is Real and You Are Completely Unprepared: The Days of Awe as a Journey of Transformation, by Alan Lew

From Publishers Weekly

Lew's exploration of the Days of Awe begins not with Rosh Hashanah-which is not featured until chapter six-but with Tisha B'Av and the month of Elul. These observances, Lew feels, set a tone of rigorous introspection in the Jewish calendar. He follows the story through Yom Kippur and Sukkot, drawing on Jewish tradition, his own experiences and a few Buddhist stories (Lew is a self-described "Zen rabbi") to take the reader on a journey of spiritual transformation-"from birth to death and back to renewal again." Lew is far more concerned with inner motivations and awareness than with external rituals, a refreshing and sometimes startling perspective. He is a perceptive thinker and a highly skilled writer, making this book a hard-hitting yet compassionate cry for spiritual renewal during the High Holy Days as well as the rest of the year. From Booklist

The Days of Awe, the Jewish rituals observed each year between roughly mid-August and mid-October, include Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and the 10 days between the two High Holy days. Citing the Hebrew Bible, Talmud, Kabbalah, and other sources, Lew offers advice on how we can live our lives in a meaningful and joyful way through prayer and meditation. Author of One God Clapping: The Spiritual Path of a Zen Rabbi (1999), he writes of the importance of introspection and self-evaluation in this period of repentance and contemplation. His insights into how we can make the most of our time are astute and profound and should be of interest to readers of all faiths. George CohenCopyright © American Library Association. I came away from my reading of this book with a deeper understanding of the process and time period of repentance --starting at Tisha B'Av and ending at Succot and a sense that my knowledge was shallow. and limited. One of the most profound insights for me is that Yom Kippur is in a sense a rehearsal for our deaths. In the end even our deeds do not count; we are at the mercy of G-d. I would like to incorporate the points Lew made into my personal journey toward repentance and to extend the time period for it according to his instructions. The book spoke to me at a very deep level, and I now start to reread it every year before Tu B'Av.

My daughter, who is an Orthodox Jew, recommended this book to me, after I had an unexpected "religious experience" at a Berkeley JCC Yom Kippur service (I am not Jewish). I laughed and wept my way through this book, which took me to the depths of my soul to find the light in the center of that dark place. I am so grateful to have been introduced to this book and to the deep import of the High Holy Days.

I am a Christian studying the Tanakh in search of a modern scholars thoughts on the High Holy Days. I must admit that the title drew me to the reading of this profound book. It is a wonderful and well explored journey through the soul searching and life enhancing possibilities available to us during the Days of Awe- to take with us into a much better life. So much more than mere information poured out of this book! Insightful and challenging and very wise.

I am reading the book for the second time this year. Rabbi Lew was a spiritual treasure lost at far too young an age. His book is packed with amazingly heartfelt insights. It is all about looking within. He brings together thousands of years of Jewish wisdom with a folksy appreciation for the struggles of living in the modern world. I can't recommend this book enough.

This is a wonderful book, the kind I have been looking for. It is an easy read and yet has a lot of deep concepts that makes one think. This combination is rare. This books takes the reader on journey through the High Holy Days in ways that anyone can relate to and helps the reader get prepared for the Holidays themselves. I have not been able to get through any one chapter in one reading. As I read each section I get lost in contemplation and in thinking about the content. This is a must have for every Jewish library including both the novice and yeshivah educated and all in between.

Fabulous book on the subject of the inner examination of the self that should take place on the HIgh Holy Days. He was a deft, poetic and masterful writer.

This is an inspiring, educational, and comforting book. I will recommend it to everyone I know who is trying to deepen their understanding of spirituality, tradition, Judaism and Jewish history. I will also recommend it to people who are trying to understand forgiveness. The process of reading the book in the last week has been like sitting with a kind teacher and storyteller, and listening to the stories and practices connected to the High Holidays. A deeply enriching experience.

An extraordinarily honest, ope, prayer, a personal journey of spiritual reflection, all within the Jewish unfolding of the High Holidays, but a journey for everyman/women interested in discovering something essential about what it means to say, "I am alive."

Review

John Banville Irish Times Is it permissible even to speak, as so many do nowadays, of a "gay community"? Tóibín treats [this] and many other questions with confidence and authority, both of which attributes are only strengthened by the moderation of his tone and the depth of his compassion. He writes with rare tenderness of figures as disparate as Elizabeth Bishop and Francis Bacon, Thomas Mann and Roger Casement, Thom Gunn and Pedro Almodóvar.John Gardner Times Literary Supplement It is Colm Tóibín's great strength that he is able to attune himself to nuances, and to the ways in which people "invent" themselves.Ruth Padel Financial Times Tóibín demonstrates wonderfully how a dedicated writer always thinks with other writers: their lives and sexuality, as well as their work. Tóibín can be engagingly mischievous and witty, but is deeply serious about books.Mark Levin Men's Journal Tóibín is a superb technician with a brave soul.Robert Sullivan Vogue Tóibín writes with high-voltage restraint; his sentences are masterfully devoid of trickery...He is tuned in to the silent language of families, the messages that are unspoken and slip past the rest of the world, landing deep into the hearts of those who understand.

This is my first nonfiction read by Toibin. I've read three of his novels and think he gets better with each one. THE BLACKWATER LIGHTSHIP was an altogether fine book and deserved the Booker Prize I think. So I couldn't wait to start this one. I confess that I'm not sure what is going on here. In the introduction Mr. Toibin presents some of his favorite artists. He says that he writes about "gay figures for whom, in the main, being gay seemed to come second in their public lives" writers who write in code, whose works are not published during their lifetime, who use vague pronouns in their poetry. (Certainly I wouldn't have wanted to miss a novel like "DEATH IN VENICE," for instance.) Toibin goes on further to say that writing this book helped him come to terms with his "own interest in secret, erotic energy," his interest in both Catholicism and Irish Protestants, his admiration for "figures who lived in a dark time and were not afraid," and his fascination with sadness and tragedy. Herein lives Mr. Toibin's problem. He takes on too much in too little space. Additionally his treatment of these artists he admires is wildly uneven, both in depth and space. For example, the chapter on Oscar Wilde covers almost 50 pages; the chapter on Mark Doty-- one of my favorite writers-- covers only 7. And for the life of me I'm not sure what Mr. Toibin is trying to say in the concluding chapter entitled "Good-bye to Catholic Ireland," a chapter I read twice. Like many Catholics who attempt to say what is wrong with their church, Mr. Toibin is too "tentative," a word he uses elsewhere in this book, in his taking on the church. Certainly he is not alone in his dilemma, however. It's easy for me to make that criticism, never having walked in a Catholic altar boy's shoes either. In Toibin's chapter on Elizabeth Bishop, we are told that "like all orphans, Bishop was clever at making friends and inventing a family for herself." I suspect that that statement is true for many people but for "all orphans"? I'm not sure that that is a true statement. There is a lot to like about this book, however. Mr. Toibin is never dull and is best when doing a narrative, something we would expect from a fine novelist. For example, when he describes a party that both he and Almodovar attended in Madrid, I wanted to be there. When I finished this book, I wanted to reread James Baldwin and read for the first time both Elizabeth Bishop and Thom Gunn. Toibin is also good at giving us delicious trivia about people. For example, we learn that Francis Bacon slept with a dog the night before being examined for military service in order to exacerbate his asthma and flunk his physical.I'm certainly glad I read this book and would read anything by this writer. I just don't think this book is as good as Mr. Toibin's fiction.

Toibin's books are always GOOD!

The title of this book is highly inaccurate and is no more than a bait. There is very little about love and lovers in the telling of these gay lives. Except for the piece on Oscar Wilde, they are mentioned either sparingly or not at all. For one of these characters, the author even forgot to tell us that he is gay. Instead, Colm prefers to undertake a critical review of their artistic work but that is not what a reader expects from the cover. The choice of gay lives is also highly idiosyncratic and offers no sense of a logical collection. This is a product of lazy research that hardly befits the prominence of the author and his obvious linguistic skills. No good enough!

Does the fact that Colm Toibin is a gay Irish writer mean he has greater insight into the works of gay Irish writers than those of us who are not gay or Irish? Based on this book, I would say the answer is an emphatic No.It is a collection of essays described as “Explorations of Gay Lives and Literature” even though its subjects include an artist and a filmmaker. Toibin rehashes old cases like Oscar Wilde, Roger Casement and Walt Whitman and writes about other homosexual artists like Francis Bacon and James Baldwin. He even throws a lesbian in for good measure – Elizabeth Bishop. Toibin generally mixes a bit of biography, autobiography and literary criticism as he tries to explain how the characters' “gayness” affected their work. I found it so dull and unconvincing that I kept skipping pages until I eventually gave up as James Baldwin appeared as the next item on the production line.I am not even sure of the accuracy at times. At one point he writes: “…many or most of the figures who re-created modern writing were gay, or Irish, or Jewish: Melville, Whitman, Hopkins, James, Yeats, Kafka, Woolf, Joyce, Stein, Beckett, Mann, Proust, Gide, Firbank, Lorca, Cocteau, Auden, Forster, Cavafy.” First of all, what is the link between being gay, Irish and Jewish and, secondly, were Joyce, Yeats, Hopkins and Mann really homosexual?I think Toibin was lucky to find a company willing to publish this unconvincing mish-mash.

Colm Toibín was approached by a London literary journal; with the prospective of producing brief lives of gay cultural figures in the twentieth century; though he was initially hesitant, they kept sending along to him books to review and he found himself writing the pieces anyway. We should be grateful he did so: he collected them in this anthology, and they're absolutely terrific. Toibin discovered from this he had a real flair for life writing (which he demonstrated later in his brief biography LADY GREGORY'S TOOTHBRUSH and his novel of Henry James's later ears, THE MASTER), and his writingh has just the right approach: he's amusing but never heavy-handed, and he is extraordinary at finding just the right anecdote to illuminate an entire life. The pieces on James Baldwin and Francis Bacon are the best on the book (and sent me out to read more on them), but all of the pieces are terrific... with the exception of a silly piece on Pedro Alomodovar he wrote for VANITY FAIR that just doesn't fit in with the rest of the anthology. (It's written in that contemptible and self-congratulatory VANITY FAIR profile style, and tells us little about Almodovar's actual life.)

This was a great read. Though written about 40 years ago it reads as very contemporary, and in this edition there is an afterword by Robin Knox-Johnston, the only person to actually finish the race. Like the authors, he's not to quick to leap to judgment of Donald Crowhurst. If you saw, and liked, the 2006 documentary Deep Water (find it on a popular video hosting site) you'll enjoy this more. It has much more detail, especially of Crowhurst's life leading up to the sailing race (he had more experience on boats than the film led us to believe) and in particular on the preparations for the race. It's hard to escape the conclusion that he'd have made it had he been better prepared, though of course his boat and its structural integrity were always another issue.Anyway, I can thoroughly recommend this book. As much as I could, I read it basically in one sitting. That is, when I wasn't at work, I was racing through this book.

In 1968, a London newspaper, inspired by recent feats of daring in the world of sailing, sponsored a contest that offered a trophy and large cash prize to the first person to successfully complete a solo, non-stop and unaided circumnavigation of the globe in a sailboat. This book is the morbidly fascinating story of one of the participants, Donald Crowhurst, a talented amateur sailor and electronics entrepreneur, who announced that he would build the world's most technologically advanced boat, including a first-of-its-kind on-board computer of his own design, and take the prize. While sailing buffs will like this book, the real meat of it is in the look at human nature that it provides. Like many entrepeneurs, Crowhurst was a bit of a blowhard who ended up departing just hours before the deadline in a boat that had never been tested and with which he was totally unfamiliar. Busy with race preparations, he never built, much less installed, the much-publicized computer. Feeling certain he could make up time as he became more familar with the craft, Crowhurst began to tell "little white lies" in his sporadic radio communications (remember, there was no GPS back then -- the yachtsmen were truly on their own).As his problems with the boat mounted, Crowhurst conceived an elaborate hoax to make the world believe he was on track to complete the race, maybe even win it all. For months he sailed around the South Atlantic, alone and increasingly desperate, monitoring radio communications about weather and constructing a fake ship's log and fake documentation that showed his supposed progress day-by-day. In the spring of 1969, when Crowhurst reestablished radio contact with his agent and family back in Britain, he learned a shocking truth. He was the only yachtsman still in the race. With all the others out of it, he had become a national celebrity, and a huge welcome was planned. At this point, the audacious hoax turned tragic. It appears from his journals that Crowhurst suffered a complete mental breakdown in the week that followed. It was too late to confess or backtrack on his claims without complete humiliation; yet as the winner and only man still in the race, he was sure to be exposed as a cheat. A few days after his last journal entry, Crowhurst's boat was found abandoned and drifting in the Atlantic by another ship. He had left all the evidence of his hoax neatly arranged for the world to find.Crowhurst is an unsympathetic character to read about, but by the end it was hard not to feel compassion in spite of everything he did. This book is much more than a reconstruction of his mysterious death. The authors invite the reader to think about the deficiencies in the heart and soul that lead human beings to lie and scheme, in spite of the inevitable disastrous results. Why is it so hard for people to be honest? And why is it these very people who lie and scheme who often attempt great things, while the honest people sit on the sidelines?Reviewer: Liz Clare, co-author of the historical novel "To the Ends of the Earth: The Last Journey of Lewis and Clark"

Fascinating story about a man and his desire to make a mark in the world. I watched "Deep Water," the movie about Mr. Crowhurst, several times, and gained greater insight into this brave man by reading the book. Yes, I write BRAVE; some people might think him foolhardy, but I think he was a brave man who did not fully understand what he was getting himself into. He was apparently a bright, intelligent man who got in over his head. A fool he was not, and I do not think he meant to be dishonest, although that was the way his voyage turned out to be: dishonest, fraudulent. A brave man, yet he ended up being a fraud... He knew that, and that is why he committed suicide... Sad ending to a good man's life.My heart goes out to his wife and children.

I've been a reader of the genre for decades. I've read many accounts of Crowhurst but finally read "the" account. And was I glad I did. I found myself wanting to get home from work as soon as I could so I could read this book. The authors are obviously well trained and gifted writers. Being journalists (both are journalists? I suppose I could read the book jacket but it's not handy) I think made them especially adept to taking on such a project. The amount of research was obviously staggering. My only knock, and not enough to give it any less than 5 stars, is the "descent into madness" section at the end of the book was a bit laborious. I suppose it had to be. Interpreting a mad man's ravings is an exercise in psychological analysis and they did a fine job. Just a bit dry for a book that was really quite scintillating.Anyone who has a passing fancy for the single handed sailing genre, or sailing, venturing or voyaging, has to read this book. It should not go unread.

Towards the end, reading Crowhurst's last log entries, I worried that I myself might come unhinged. This is not a sailing book -- it is a detective story about what pressure and isolation can do to the human mind. The authors do a wonderful job of assembling and presenting the evidence. It doesn't matter at all that you know the complete story before you start (but if you don't want to know, simply skip the rest of this paragraph): A guy's marriage and business ventures are in shambles; he hoodwinks a town into building him a bad plywood trimaran for an around-the-world race; he gets scared and fakes everything by staying in the Atlantic and sailing in circles; he goes nuts and walks overboard. An amazing study of the human mind under pressure -- I commend the authors. This book will shake you up. The necessary antidote is "The Long Way" by Bernard Moitessier, a lyrical story about the same race by the man who was winning it, but was so raptured by the Deep that he forfeited the prize and just kept on sailing...

An excellent book. Is there a little of Donald in all of us ! Very well written and the subject matter explained.

This was a gift. I haven't read the book but the recipient stated afterwards that he wants to go sailing.

Funniest stuff ever!

People tend to stare and draw away from a person sitting alone and laughing helplessly. I live in an apartment and I was afraid my neighbors would call 911 if I read too long! It is laugh-out-loud and better-empty-the bladder-BEFORE-starting-to-read funny.

Be ready to laugh out loud and hard. Keep kleenix with you because you will be laughing so hard you will be crying.

Some of these were funny, but nothing new that I haven't already seen floating around on the internet. Still, though, the price was right (free) and it is good for a few minutes of wasting time.

This is just so funny, especially if you have ever been "victimized" by your auto-correct. Good warning guide for a check your recipient before you hit send, on text messages as well.

I haven't laughed so hard in years! I think I might just pop back to this book every time I need to chuckle so hard that I cry. Thank you for that Marcus Rainey.

They "failed" texts were pretty good, but for the most part they were more silly than funny.

I laughed so much at some of these that I cried. Hysterically funny and a good lesson on being VERY careful what you text to whom...

This isn't a new cookbook, and Penelope Casas has written a few that supplement it, but it ranks alongside James Beard's cookbooks for quality and utility!. I lived in Spain for four years, and came to love the food. This copy of the book was a replacement for the copy that finally fell apart after many years of hard use. Having to discard the old copy was like discarding an old lover! Receipes are easy to follow, ingredients are easy to find. When unique ingredients are needed, Casas gives you enough information to find them- and this was before the Internet which now makes it a breeze, even when living in rural South Carolina! I highly recomment this book for anyone who likes Spanish food or who would like to try it. Just a few recipes, like Fabada Asturiana, Cocido Madrileno and Fideus (Paella with noodles instead of rice) make it worth the cost!

I had a copy and one of my children has it and I wanted another one. Good find and value and in excellent condition.

This book is full of a dynamic range of Spanish recipes, all of which are both tasty and easy to prepare. Every recipe I've made has come out perfect, I have never had a failure. Ms. Casas has clearly gone to great lengths to capture authentic, well tested recipes that anyone can prepare. This book is so diverse in its scope that it would take a long time to tire of using it. I can hardly bare to cook anything else. Spanish flavor with its simplicity and freshness of flavors could not be better presented then in this perfect book. Highly reccomended!

I really love the variety presented in this book. It has tons of recipes for all sorts of skill levels. So if you want to make something elaborate for Spanish night or whatever, this one has you covered, but unlike other ethnic cookbooks, this one also has you covered if you just want to whip something together in a few minutes. I've done a couple of the elaborate recipes and they've all been great, but the really great thing is the number of ten-minute recipes that use between three (!) and five common ingredients, yet still turn out notably Spanish. The funny thing is that before all of simplest recipes, the author often says that it's actually one of her husband's favorite dishes and one that she ends up making most often.Added to that, all the side recommendations and advice that is given about each recipe and ingredients, this is by far the best ethnic cookbook I've ever owned. I can't imagine it being anything other than five stars.

This book is at the same time my favorite Spanish cookbook and the most frustrating. The recipes are terrific. I also have Casas' Delicioso! (which I highly recommend as well), but I prefer this book because it is better organized, with more of the standard Spanish recipes I crave (seafood with green sauce, scallops with sherry sauce, etc.-- fantastic). But with her later books such as Delicioso, Casas (or her editor) has learned to provide clearer, more accurate cooking instructions. In The Foods and Wines of Spain, the instructions are much more vague. How high should the heat be on the stove? How long should you sautee the onions? What does it mean exactly to "dust" something with flour? These things are often not spelled out. I am a pretty experienced cook but I would definitely benefit from some better instructions in some of the recipes. I can see how this book would be confusing for the novice cook or someone fairly new to Spanish cuisine-- if you are in this category you might want to start out with Delicioso!.

I love all of Penelope Casas' books on Spanish cooking and this one is the place to start.

Some cookbook authors go overboard in an attempt to take old traditional recipes and put a modern spin on them. Penelope Casas book instead shows respect for traditional recipes, preparations and flavors in a book that is straightforward, and written in a conversational tone as if one is sitting on a kitchen stool beside her in her kitchen. I really enjoyed it.

I am well pleased with the book . It's just what I expected.

How can a book go from great to terrible so quickly? Rita's story starts out inspirationally, a divorced housewife starting life anew in a small Zapotec village. Rita continues to visit Honduras, Guetemala, and Nicaragua, all during a time of political strife and US interventions. It continues, the reader fascinated, as Rita manages to get a place to stay in Borneo with a famous anthropologist. Then she arrives in Bali, where she stays for many years. The soliloquies are weaker here, the story less detailed, and certainly less interesting. Suddenly, Rita, an exciting journeyer, starts to lose her charm. The story in Bali isn't fleshed out enough to make it come alive. It is difficult to read as Rita goes from intrepid traveller to an overweight senior. As a lifelong exerciser, it was hard for me to sympathise with Rita's admitted difficulties in training for the trek. She writes that she simply couldn't motivate herself.I found myself skipping pages and speed-reading, vainly hoping that the book was going to get good again. It didn't.

Right after my divorce was final, I read "Tales of a Female Nomad". I had been married for 38 years and was looking for a way to reinvent my life.Rita's book helped me to get the courage to do new things that I ordinarily wouldn't do. Although I did travel to some new places, my risk taking was not just limited to travel. I had a new attitude. I thought to myself, "If Rita can do this, so can I”.Rita's book helped me change my perception of being a lonely divorced woman, to embracing exciting new things. The things I liked the most about Rita's book were her sincerity, her ability and her goal of connecting to people. I also loved her courage and trust of people.Thank you Rita!

This book inspired me to set off on my own journey and like Rita, my adventure lasted years. Over those years I loaned this book out many, many times and eventually it never came back to me. I was glad to purchase a new copy now that I'm settled down in the States again. The store gets a little slow in the last chapter about the author's time southeast Asia (in Bali if I remember right), but in a way that makes sense since that's where her own adventure settled down for some time. Enjoy that section for the gorgeous descriptions of the food. Enjoy the rest of the book for the sense of adventure and an openness to new experience that might set you off on your own travels.

Rita is my idol. I know I am not brave enough (and now physically unable) to travel and experience the world in Rita's manner. She writes that at parties it is women who are most interested in her adventures. I enjoyed the well-written descriptions of the places, ceremonies, and foods in the book. More revealing about the author and the world were the descriptions of human nature, trust, and relationships. Brava Rita!

I really enjoyed this woman's courage in living her own life by traveling to faraway places and authentically engaging with people. She felt the fear and did it anyway. She experienced anxiety, loneliness, discomfort, judgement and doubt, but she did it anyway. She opened herself up and dove right in, experiencing joy, serenity, affection, communion, deep engagement and laughter with others in a non-traditional way. She questioned her beliefs, reinvented her way of living and thrived. So many of us live somewhat pedestrian lives, preoccupied with security and stability; she did not and I was moved and inspired by her traveling tales, purposeful, deliberate connections with " others", and frequent keen insights. It was refreshing.

This author was DELIGHTFUL in how she relayed her tales of travel. She has a mastery of language without sounding the least bit dry or academic. Her travels were immensely interesting and entertaining. She frankly described her difficulties and challenges without denigrating the locals, which was heart-warming without being saccharin. I've given this book as gifts and have always received the sincerest thanks for it.

Not Pulitzer material but I liked how she evolved and the challenges she embraced as she matured in her new role as a nomad. There are a lot of people that don't understand the call to wander and Rita describes it well.

One of my favorite books on earth. Told in first person, present tense, Gelman reveals her international explorations, from her first awkward foray into Mexico to the years she spent living in faraway locales, from New Zealand to Papua New Guinea to Asia. Her insight, curiosity, kindness, and honesty come through in spades. A keeper.

Very enjoyable read; the author clearly loves her nomadic lifestyle, and is a very talented writer. I find most nonfiction books lose steam toward the end, and this is no exception (though, honestly, that could easily be more of a flaw in me than with any of the authors). This book follows the author as she travels the world and immerses herself in a number of different cultures, and learns how to relax, trust herself and others, and shed some of her western modesty. It is well written and I can relate to the desire to go everywhere and do everything. There is nothing at all wrong with the book, but it is not entirely perfect either. It doesn't have to be; it was an enjoyable read, and sparked (even more of) my wanderlust.

Pat Conroy: Our Lifelong Friendship

Review

“Bernie Schein is the funniest man alive, or so he has dogmatically maintained during the burdensome decades I have known him. . . . [He is] by turns hysterically funny, wildly neurotic, uniquely sensitive, and heartbreakingly honest.”—Pat Conroy “The friendship between Bernie Schein and Pat Conroy was long, deep, and all-encompassing. Bernie tells of it with fierce love, great particularity, and often the outrageous wit that makes him Bernie and no one else. Viva Bernie Schein for giving us his Pat Conroy." —Anne Rivers Siddons Quotes for Famous All Over Town: "Bernie Schein is the funniest man alive, or so he has dogmatically maintained during the burdensome decades I have known him. Like its author, this ambitious novel is by turns hysterically funny, wildly neurotic, uniquely sensitive, and heartbreakingly honest. Bernie has staked his claim on the literary landscape of the South with his unforgettable small town of equally unforgettable Jews, whites, blacks, marines, politicians, prostitutes, cops, killers, sell-outs, aristocrats, journalists, and rebels. He shies away from neither the best nor worse in us and, with compassion and authority, tells a story that is at once his own and that of everyone you will ever meet, each made famous all over town."—Pat Conroy "Another time, another place—yet Somerset, South Carolina, is every small town anywhere in anytime. Its characters represent each of us in all of our flawed, tragicomic humanity. I know these people and you will, too. They're friends, relatives, neighbors, the people we go to church or synagogue with, the ones we wed and bed, love and hate, mourn and bury. Leaning on their backyard fences, they're already spreading the word: YOU are in this book!"—Cassandra King "Bernie Schein's Famous All over Town achieves what engaging storytelling is supposed to achieve—expressive characters revealing spirited stories. Covering the 60s into the 90s of conflict and change in the lowcountry of South Carolina, Schein's cast of activists rise up in triumph. . . Splendidly written, it is a reader's delight."—Terry Kay, author of To Dance with the White Dog and The Book of Marie "Every South Carolina schoolboy in the '60s knew the story of the shaved-head, steely-eyed recruits who were maliciously marched into the pluff mud at Parris Island, a place we all feared, for good reason. Within these pages, Bernie Schein transports us deep into that psychologically loaded place and time where religion and racism serve as barometric bookends to a tragedy that touched the lives of an entire town and resonated with the whole nation."—Ken Burger, author of Swallow Savannah, Sister Santee, and Salkehatchie Soup "Famous All over Town captures the heart and essence of imperfect, lovable, infuriating, and admirable southern characters in a story full of vivid images and intersecting story lines from the '60s through the '90s. With a soft heart and a calloused hand, Bernie Schein introduces us to a South we might not ever know without him, and it's a place I'd like to settle in for good."—Patti Callahan Henry, author of The Stories We Tell, And Then I Found You, and others "Since you can't sing "Dixie," "We Shall Overcome," and "My Yiddishe Momme" all at once, you must read this splendid novel, a vision of the small-town South, past and present, that will rattle your funny bone and rend your heart."—Peter Golden, author of Comeback Love "No one is more uniquely qualified to write about his friendship with my late husband, Pat Conroy, than his oldest and closest friend, Bernie Schein. Because they shared the same irreverent humor, biting intellect, and big-hearted personalities, their bond was powerful enough to survive the many turmoils and betrayals that came their way. Bernie’s portrayal of his decades-long relationship with Pat is intimate, honest, heartbreaking, and highly readable. This book is an ode to a rare, complex, and loving friendship."—Cassandra King Conroy, author of The Sunday Wife“Bernie Schein is the funniest man alive, or so he has dogmatically maintained during the burdensome decades I have known him. . . This book is an ode to a rare, complex, and loving friendship."—Cassandra King Conroy, author of The Sunday Wife
