I read through all the first 3 of these, the gist is that this guy starts off by saying "I've discovered something important! Stay with me on this!", and then goes through 40 or 50 pages of mental gymnastics, some of which connect and are believable, some of which are reeeeaaally stretching for a connection and don't quite make it. Then he says "oops, out of time in this volume, make sure to buy the next one to see what's next!" Then repeat on the next volume.I stayed with it through a lot of the stretches, cuz I wanted to see what they were building up to, what they were meant to support, and I wanted to see if they did actually support it, or not.Doesn't seem like he's actually going anywhere with it. He's actually said a few times "stay with me, not sure where I'm going with this." The vibe I get is that he's just sort of improvising, playing around with vaguely new-age topics, hoping we like the improv enough to keep buying for a couple more volumes before we get bored.Which, more power to him, I guess. A lot of new age writing is really vague and shifty and not actually saying much; if this guy can play on that and make a couple grand on Gnostic jazz before we figure out he doesn't have a finale, then good for him. I won't be buying any more of these though. Most of his arguments don't actually connect, and aren't actually able to support anything, so I'm out.

I thought it was interesting to see the various fairytales being opened up like this. I didn’t even know what steganography meant before this. So I found this book both easy to read and very informative. The sort of inner secrets being revealed from them was a real trip.I don’t know what the author Timothy’s background is but he seems to have more than just an idea working with hidden data, because he has masterfully translated that experience into a book that even amateurs like me about covert communication can understand. It was fun revisiting the fictional world of the Grimm brothers and reading their stories again. It was interesting to read them again through a different lens. A lot of details about the technique used have been mentioned and it got me interested in the subject.

While I understand the reason the author went into the encryption methods; I felt he went too far with the fairy tales and explanations and too much detail in explaining the systems. As an avid student of the Gospel of Thomas and Gnostic books; I was/am really more interested in understanding his interpretations of the Thomasine text and the Gnostic Book of John with relation to the Gospels. I will try the next volume and see if he cuts to the chase. Hopeful

Reading this book, I felt like I was a horse led with blinders. Ideas were too forced and connections were weak. The Grimm fairy tales were indeed weird and I expected to be fascinated unraveling them. But connecting it to an oriental occult system? Jordan Banks is the new kid at one of the best private schools in the state that offers a wealth of academic and extra-curricular opportunities and experiences for its students and while its prestige is praiseworthy, it is woefully lacking in diversity. Jordan is one of a small number of students of color at the school but just like every other twelve-year-old middle school student has to navigate making new friends, avoiding awkward crushes, getting good grades, and making time to do what he loves most-drawing cartoons. His art is embedded throughout the text and gives the reader an inside look at Jordan’s thoughts on well, just about everything. His drawings are informative, oftentimes laugh-out-loud hilarious, and honest.There’s a gaping void as it concerns the representation of African American youths in books in general across all genres but especially in graphic novels. Jerry Craft expertly enters into this space and gifts us with New Kid. It is a relevant read. A cool, down-to-earth middle school story for everyone. I want to hug this book! I want to read it over and over and then wrap it up and give a copy to every child I know. No doubt that Jerry Craft upholds his mission to “write the books he wishes he had when he was a kid” because this is the sort of book I wish I’d had as a child. No offense to The Baby-Sitters Club series from back in my day, but what about books with characters that look like me and share in my experiences? I would have loved a book like this!I would recommend this book for intermediate elementary students (4th-5th grade), middle school and high school too. I honestly think it will have a wide range of interest much like books like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Amulet, Sisters, and Drama that are read from elementary school straight through high school.

Usually I am not a big fan of comic books/graphic novels but since my son's school invited the author, just decided to get a copy for my son. I am glad I did. Story was well plotted very realistically and emotionally. No extream feelings or pampering either about the school system. Main characters are very reasonable to face the challenges but not so much super-heroic. Very well balanced. Recommend this book to any one from 4th -7th and I am pretty sure even older kids will enjoy. -very strict mom of 12 and 9 y/o.

The art work, the microaggressions, the freezing sports moments, the "Mean Streets of Uptown" book truth- this story contains so much truth and heart and will stick with me for awhile. This is a must have for middle school shelves!

Jerry Craft visited my daughter’s school a few months before this book was released. My daughter couldn’t wait for it to be released, asking almost daily how much longer until we would get it.We preordered it and got it right when it came out.It didn’t disappoint. My daughter loved the book and now has a list for her friends waiting to borrow it.

I must have misunderstood the book description; this 'book' is filled with comic book style pictures with some text, but not a lot.This book might be suitable for person who isn't an adequate reader of text novels.

I studied using this edition, along with the app, for a month. Passed my first try with a great score! It was a great generalist review of the SW profession. During testing, I was able to vividly recall material straight from this book

I bought this book at the end of February and my LMSW exam was at the end of March. I used only this book to study & I passed it on the 1st try! The book was really helpful, especially the practice test at the back. My only recommendation would be for the next book to structure the practice questions as they are on the exam. In addition to this book, PLEASE TAKE THE ASWB ONLINE PRACTICE EXAM!!! That's what's MOST helpful!!

This review guide claims to reflect the 2018 blueprint of the ASWB exam. However, all ethics questions refer to a 2006 version of the NASW Code of Ethics. The code of ethics is a substantial part of the exam and many of the questions and answer explanations do not reflect what will be on the test. It is not worth the money.

Great book. Two areas that were not covered with great detail was the Code of Ethics and diagnostics. I recommend the social work podcast and Diagnosis Made Easier to fill in gaps. Social work podcast also covers theories and interventions in detail. This book gives the most comprehensive guide to study though. It sets you on a path. I used it along with the noted above and the Pocket Prep app which has about 600 questions similar to the example exam in the book. The questions are NOT like the exam but they get you accustomed to what they’ll be like. I didn’t buy the aswb exam but I heard those are the most similar to a real exam. Hope this helps

I just purchased this book and the app doesn’t work with IOS (Apple products). You can still use the information on a computer or android.Let the studying begin and the price dropped less than a week of my purchase ðŸ˜

So I waited a bit to post this. I applied to take my CSW examination in KY around the time I ordered it. I realized quickly that I needed to practice some before taking it. I had read so many stories of people taking the test and failing which only added to my anxiety. This book helped me with understanding the test and provided a great resource for me to touch up on the areas that I needed improvement in. The only con I found with this book is that the code for the app had been used already. However, there is a great app on the app store called pocket prep that is a great companion. The questions will link you to pages in this very study guide so that you can study. So they worked great together. Will this ensure you pass the first time? I won't promise that. Everyone tests differently. I will tell you that this could help you though!

I purchased this book with anticipation that I would be given an overview of the 4 content areas of the exam. It's a good overview. I was enticed by the mobile app feature. The download instructions were not clear so, I had to call customer service. It would have been better if this was just straight forward, but persistently, I had to jump through some hoops. I'm pleased with the outcome because it is worth it to have these study materials at home AND in the palm of my hand for the on-the-go person. If you're willing to go through a bit of trouble with the mobile app feature and if you're looking for an overview, this might be the material for you. Fingers crossed this is good enough for the exam!

If you are planning to take the MSW exam this is a must have. Very well written, easy to understand and has ALL you NEED to pass the exam. It definitely worked for me!

On the night of April 4, 1991, during a spring-break family vacation to St. Louis, Cummins's 19-year-old brother, Tom, and his two female cousins were attacked while walking on the abandoned Old Chain of Rocks Bridge. During the attack, the girls were raped; afterward, all three were pushed off the bridge by the four assailants. Tom survived; the girls did not. Cummins presents a mesmerizing, highly balanced memoir of the events, writing in the third person to give readers "an intimate knowledge of each facet of the story." She introduces her own family, referring to herself by her childhood nickname, and then does the same for each of the assailants, thoughtfully painting an in-depth portrait of each character without ever passing judgment. Moreover, she takes what could be cold, dry factual information from "court documents, police records, electronic media" and her own interviews and deftly weaves them into a compelling, novel-like account. She explores the family's initial horror over the police holding Tom as a suspect for this crime that made national headlines. (One of the attackers wound up with a 30-year plea; the others are currently on death row.) For someone so closely related to a crime victim to strike such a fine balance in chronicling it is a highly admirable feat. I hate to say, "I love it" for such a tragic story as this one. It is a cliche for one to say they found the book hard to put down but such was the case with this book. Author Jeannine Cummins relates the story of her bother and their two cousins when the Cummins' family visited their relatives in St. Louis, Missouri. I need not relate the tragedy here as several reviewers has already done that. Suffice it to say the cruelty individuals can do to others knows no bounds whatsoever. The 1924 case of Leopold and Loeb murdering Bobby Franks was solved due to a pair of glasses. The case in this book was solved due to a flashlight in addition to the survival of Tom Cummins.After all the heartache and difficulties that Tom Cummins had to endure to survive this ordeal the punishment from the St. Louis police department was inexcusable. Anything to "solve" a case never mind whether we have the correct individual/s or not.The book contains photos of the Cummins and Kerry family in addition to photos of the Chain of Rocks Bridges north of St. Louis. If you want to find photos of the sickos who are responsible for this heinous crime you'll have to go to the internet. I can certainly understand author Jeanine Cummins not wanting to contaminate her book by placing photos of these individuals in her book.This book is true crime at its worst. My sincere sympathy to both the Cummins and Kerry family for what they have had to endure.

I do agree with several other reviews that this book was one that I just couldn't put down. Written with such true conviction and love for those she lost. The entire way through I was angry with the justice system for failing these families and accusing Tom of such a heinous crime. His true passion was the love of his cousins and what happened that day in 1991 will forever be engrained in his mind, heart and soul. My condolences go out to the Kerry/Cummins families. May you find true peace!

As one reviewer has noted, this is not a typical addition to the true crime genre. It shares much in common with Strange Piece of Paradise in that both are attempts by a victim/family member to depict the aftermath of a crime. Where Terri Jentz had to confront years of not knowing who her attacker was, Jeanine Cummins and family had to face having a beloved family member being accused of killing two other beloved family members.It's hard to review a book such as this without a certain amount of sympathy entering into one's judgment. It is for me, at least. This is not the best written non-fiction book you'll ever read, nor is the prose in it the most fluid. It is also, because of Cummins' decision to tell this in the third-person, the most emotionally wrought. But it is better written than most first person accounts I've read. Cummins takes considerable pains to bring Julie and Robin Kerry to life, to make the reader feel the loss Cummins and her family felt. The horror of their deaths (and the nature of their deaths) is compounded when Cummins' brother is accused of their murders.This is the story of the death of innocence, both literal and figurative. By the time the murders are caught, turn on each other and three are sentenced to death there little sense of justice for the family. Two girls have been gang-raped and murdered, one of the bodies has never been found. The survivor of the attacks has been first branded the likely suspect by the press then must relive the events over and over, in the trials and the subsequent parole hearings. As if this isn't enough agony, they must endure having the convicted murderers still claim their innocence and blame one of the victims. The question of Why? remains unanswered by the perpetrators and possibly unanswerable.

It was a requirement in class to read a criminal book. I chose this one and enjoyed it. This boom is based on a true story and written by a family member of the victim. The book was very interesting and threw alot of curveballs at the victims family. It is very rare for me to read a book. I am glad I chose to read this one!

It's time the victims of crime are remembered versus the criminal and I am grateful the author had the courage to write this book honoring her family members. Jeanine Cummins had my full attention from the first page to the last page. Well done and I look forward to reading one of your novels next!

a few years ago after I first read this book, I had the chance to be in st. louis and made it a point to see this bridge.the bridge in question is right in downtown east st. louis, bad part of town. who would go down there late at night, to a closed bridge?kids. it was scary to look at durning the day.this is well written, and the heart break can be felt by the reader.if you can handle the subject, it's a really good book.ms. cummins really makes you feel her sadness, and for me that is a good writer that is able to do that.

I used to work with one of the sister's related to the Kerry sisters. I don't think she was mentioned in this story, if she was, her name was changed. Anyway, she was the one who told me about this book. It was very well written, and it was nice to read it from the family's point of view. Such a tragedy though! My hearts go out to all of you still...I know you just had another anniversary, and I know they really never get any easier! Just know that they truly made a difference on this earth, and they will live on forever through the hearts of so many that they touched.

I don't often read books. I wanted to buy a couple before a flight and I kinda dig true crime and this popped up. VERY GOOD! I couldn't put it down!! I spent my whole vacation on the beach reading this book!! It was very touching and I felt "close" with the characters.... I'll never forget this one.

CHANDLER O'LEARY is an illustrator and lettering artist, and a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design. She is the co-author of Dead Feminists: Historic Heroines in Living Color and the author of an illustrated travel blog called Drawn the Road Again. She lives in Tacoma, Washington, and spends every spare moment traveling America's winding back roads, sketchbook in hand.
