I truly wish I had been able to read this book 10 years ago, it would have changed my life - my bone density, my well being and my post menopausal health. Dr. Seibel has written a momentous book for women - the best and apparently only resource for understanding hormones and the role hormones play in women's heart, breast, bone and mental well being. Hormone replacement decisions have been and continue to be made by women and their doctors with decades old inaccurate medical information. This is a tragedy for menopausal women of today who are vibrant, healthy, active and focused on making the most of their lives after menopause. Dr. Seibel provides clear explanations and analyses of the anxieties and fears connected to hormone replacement use. His extensive experience and insight provides the basis for the very critical decisions every woman needs to make regarding her health and future after menopause. I urge you to read Dr. Siebel's book. Whatever you decide, you will have invested in knowing the latest and best information in a timely way. I wish I had known during my estrogen window.

I am 47 and I am in peri-menopause. I can connect with sooo many of the symptoms already! I think this is a good read for all women so you know what to expect or look for when you enter this stage of life. Educate yourself so that you can make better informed decisions about your body and your long term health.There is a lot of repetition in the beginning of the book, but hang in there. Also have a highlighter ready so you can easily refer back to those things that apply to you.

Excellent book for really understanding menopause and what exactly happens with hormones . Every doctor should have a copy and be able to explain it to women. I had to figure out my own symptoms and fix with hormone replacement pellets . Shameful lack of knowledge by doctors even gynecologists. This book really helped in my decision with taking or not taking an estrogen/progesterone supplement. Especially since there can be a lot of controversy (these days) with the reality of menopause.I also found it hard finding literature and/or an (in-network) specialist in the medical industry that works with older women and menopause and this book really helped directing me in my search.

after reading the third book. The first two were good; the concept was excellent and the characters had room to develop well. But the third book just... didn't go anywhere and I found myself impatiently skipping through bits of the desert battles because it just didn't do anything for the story line. Worse, the characters didn't develop further and some stayed at a critical two dimensional stage that disappointed. I'd like to hope this does not become another Wheel of Time styled tale. The storyline isn't strong enough to hold it. All said and done though, the first two books in the trilogy were great. Just a shame the reverse was true for the third.

Thrilling storyline, great characters, awesome world building. The first 2 books are top notch. Unfortunately, the third book falls a little flat. It's still an awesome series. I just hope book 4 lives up to books one and two.

The prose in this novel is beautifully written. It paints stunning images that kept me reading the way an artsy film will keep me watching, even if I'm not enjoying everything about it. The premise was really interesting, and it's the reason I bought the book in the first place, but the characters could've used more development. They didn't have any quirks or habits or personality traits that really stood out and made them feel real to me. As a result, they felt like the flat felt board cut-outs that I used to use to tell stories with my children. They were merely puppets used to tell the story, not people living the story. Even so, I still enjoyed the book overall, and I will eventually read the next in the series because I already own it.

A fun, easy to read series and great time killer. Characters are mostly 2 dimensional archetypes with the occasional bit of angst over their uncanny Landkist powers thrown in to keep them "human". And, while character development takes on a ponderous, some times boring pace, what really impressed me, is this cat can write fight and battle scenes like no one else I've read. Seriously fantastic in this regard. And, the adventure, while fairly standard, is one I've enjoyed taking.However, the author suffers from a tic -- his characters do a lot of spitting, eye colour staring "his amber coloured eyes stared into the distance", and smiling -- while an exaggeration (slight), but of a 1,500ish page book, removing a every third time a character does one of those three would drop the page count 300 pages and be no less descriptive.If you're looking for a long but light read with some very well described fight and battle scenes, this is your series.

I enjoyed the first book, but the second was way too wordy and extremely slow to develop. I bought all 3 books, but I got so bored I couldn't finish the second, so I never read the third. It was like the author was just trying to fill the pages for

About the Author

Stephen Coates was born in Sheffield in 1960. Son of a draughtsman, he was introduced to drawing at a very young age. He excelled in art at school but chose a career in retail, working first in the music industry for 16 years followed by another 16 years running his own catering business.Largely self taught, Stephen specialised in watercolours and over a period of around twenty years, developed his own style and unique brand of teaching in his spare time. In 2011 he traded his sandwich business for a career in art and teaching. Six Sigma superficially is an excellent concept and this book serves the reader well in providing a detailed description of the concept. Early chapters take the reader on a journey through various companies providing an education on the importance of benchmarking, measuring defect rates, implementation strategies, and measuring six sigma performance. When the book begins to focus on implementation and deployment in later chapters the paint strokes begin to get very broad. The ideas provided to the reader are oversimplified and basic. For example, "Companies that improve their ability to consistently meet their customer's needs will produce positive bottom-line results." Really? I believe that the 1% of managers that are unware of this concept are not reading this book. The inability of this book to lay out a detailed plan for implementation results from the fact that each business is significantly different. If after reading this book the six sigma concept is appealing one could consider employing a consultant or creating a team for implementation. In my opinion the book also applies more to businesses with easily measurable performance such as manufacturing products as opposed to service providing businesses. Although customer satisfaction can be measured it is much easier to note an increase in monthly unit production. In summary six sigma is a difficult concept to initiate without the full commitment of your management team but the individual businessman will gain some valuable managerial skills through the book's good advice.

If you want to understand what Six Sigma is, what it is good for, and how it can work for your company, then check this out. If you are looking for training materials to become a practitioner, such as learning to be a green belt or black belt, this is the wrong title for you.I listened to the CD set a couple times, and I still pick up new insights. It starts out slow, but it's worth the listen. I don't know where other reviewers get the idea this is a commercial - I didn't get this impression at all from the audio version.

From my prespective, readers who purchase a book on Six Sigma are somehow experienced on Quality processes and want to learn more on the topic. However, this book is a total dissapointemet, as it is more of advertisement than knowlege. The author could have written ten pages to describe what was said on 281 pages! All that was written were Black Belts, how vital were they to the process. No emphasis on the Six Segma process, no description of the mechanism from an engineering prespective. It is more of 'Six Segma is the best and we can deliver the impossible' approach! For me this could be a good Novel to read, not for serious Managers.

What was good

This is by far the best book that I have read on cost reduction management in business processes.The authors have been involved with Six Sigma methods since the initiative originally began at Motorola. In their role as trainers for those who apply Six Sigma methods, they have a bird's eye view of the implementation issues of the last few years.The book has a nice balance among explaining the concept, how to apply the concept, case examples of application, and comparisons to other ways of thinking about providing products and services. I found that perspective was unusually broad, but pretty specific for a business book.Three kinds of people will be disappointed in this book: (1) Those who already apply another quality improvement method and are pleased with the results they are getting. (2) People who have only a casual interest in cost reduction (3) People who would like to know the details of how to apply the analytical methods involved. If you fall into one of those camps, you should probably skim the book or skip it.On the other hand, if you are interested in improving your operations, profitability, performance and effectiveness, you should definitely read this book. It will give you a realistic sense of what the potential is for your enterprise to benefit from the Six Sigma process. If that potential interests you, it will also give you a variety of ways to investigate the opportunity. You can't ask for much more from one book.Separately, I should mention that some of the case studies cited here are ones that our firm has separately investigated for other purposes. In each case, the reports are identical to what we learned. The authors seem to have been scrupulously careful to get the details right -- something that seems very appropriate for people explaining Six Sigma (3.4 errors per million opportunities).Although I like this book very much, the Six Sigma concept does have some limitations. It may help you to be aware of some of them before reading this book. First, Six Sigma is usually focused on your own operations and those of your suppliers rather than the ecosystem that supports you. This limited focus causes some opportunities to be missed. Second, there may be trade-offs between time to market and Six Sigma in short-lived products that require separate consideration. Third, many people will make mistakes in how they measure performance for the customer and end user using this concept. The author warn against this, but the concept unfortunately lends itself to being weak in this area. Fourth, the concept tends to leave an organization too complacent after achieving Six Sigma. At such moments, there are probably still important areas where approach perfection will be incredibly valuable. But your organization may stop looking for them. The theory suggests limited benefits from pressing further at this point. The theory will turn out to be wrong in some critical applications, especially where life and death are involved.A good book to read at the same time is Lean Thinking which will give you another interesting perspective on ways to reduce defects and create more value at the same time.

i know this may sound strange to some, but the way indian larry passed was the way i think a lot of us would like to go, in defiance of practicality. doing what it is that we truly love to do. taking a risk and then taking it again. im not a biker and i dont pretend to be, and not being one makes it difficult for me to conceptualize what a real biker truly is. but of all the biker shows i have watched and all the magazines and books i have read, indian larry truly embodies that image. he defines in my mind the quintissential biker. i watched biker build off from the begining and indian larry was instantly my favorite. of course being born and raised in brooklyn myself quickly endeared him to me. i remember around the time larry passed the pope had died too. and i remember thinking to myself, wow, the pope known and loved by billions and yet i feel nothing for him. and then here is this guy from brooklyn who builds motorcycles and lives an oddball lifestyle and says and does things that i instantly relate to. larry made me think, i mean truly ponder life in just a couple of hours that a world spiritual leader could not do in how many years? i never met you larry but i miss you. and if this sounds mushy to some, well im sorry. as for the book, its magnificent. a fitting tribute to a true motorcycle legend. great writing and excellent photographs from different times in larrys life. its really amazing to see the evolution of this man. the weight lifting muscle bound photos are a trip. then a couple pages later he has a drug-mug. then hes swimming at coney and riding his bike in shorts- in the winter! i hate the cold so these pix crack me up. there are plenty of studio bike photos of all the biker build off bikes. its a great book. any one who admired indian larry should have it and i am truly glad that i have one. p.s. to all the people who contributed to this book, you did an excellent job. jackthewack, march 06

This is a great book to read about the life of a great bike builder, artist and stunt rider (and many other things I didn't know about). In the book aside from the great stories about his life there are plenty of photos of the life he lived and the work he did. Indian Larry will be missed for a long time to come. Very few people can come close to the talents he had. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about him.

This book is a must if you're an Indian Larry fan or just into custom bikes. The guy was a legend, he seemed to touch so many peoples lives in a positive way and lived life to the full and this book is a great tribute to him. It has some fantastic photos of the bikes he built, his mates he rode with, fans and and some great reading about the journey of his life."The motorcycle is like a sacred object to me. When I go out for a ride, I'm exactly in the moment. It's like meditation; I'm in the flow." INDIAN LARRY

Larry was happy being who he was. He states as much in his interviews during his Biker Build Off episodes. I feel the author of this book forgets that and puts Larry high on this pedestal where Larry never wanted to be. His bikes was his art and he appreciated his fans that wanted to see it. What made him unique is that he was kind, caring and considerate. Traits that one hardly ever sees in a person, especially all at one time. This book does Larry justice when telling his story from boyhood to bikehood but loses its flavor when the author throws in his collegiate words to make his point on how great Larry was. Larry seemed, to me, like he was a simple man who wanted simple things and, to put it simply, wanted to share his art with those who would appreciate it. Long story short, this is a good book with a good read and some great photos.

Just what I wanted

I was very interested in the subject matter, but was disappointed in the style of the author. Nichols practically made Indian Larry a god. I would much rather have read of his more human side, the way others in the book talk about his interactions with his fans, than to see him portrayed as a mystery-shrouded spiritualistic holy man. Indian Larry was a human, full of human faults, quirks and characteristics. His motorcycles were as unique as his lifestyle, but, in the end they were still motorcycles, just as he was still a man.

Super cool book about the man. True legend. Lots of pictures.

This is a great book even if you're not into motorcycles. Indian Larry was a master at art (which happened to be motorcycles). I have read this book 3 times now, and I still love it.

I’ve also seen that technique also used in a book that teaches math by setting up the problems faced by Euclid, etc. and giving readers enough clues so they too can reach their own aha moments.While TED Talks doesn’t use programmed learning, it is very painless reading, packed with lots of good ideas. You may not come away and be able to deliver a TED Talk right away but you will come away with at least several new ideas on how to improve your ability to get your message across in group settings.Anyone who has seen several TED Talks knows there is no one way to deliver the talks but the book has plenty to say about what generally doesn’t work and what does. I’ll just hit on a few that struck me as helpful:• Don’t give a sales pitch. The speaker’s job is to give to the audience, not to take.• Sometimes it takes a little demolition before changing minds. Example: In ancient societies, a third of men died violent deaths. Modern media plays up violence because that’s what sells.We've changed. After crushing their stereotypes, now you can go onto your points.• Take your audience down your own path of discovery. By asking them to join the process, they get more involved.• Make sure your words and images work together.• Don’t leave a slide up once you are finished with it. Better to put up a blank screen to avoid distraction.• Transitions in Keynote should be kept simple. Cut when shifting to a new idea. Dissolve when slides are related. Dazzle distracts.• Most TED speakers memorize and then practice so much it sounds spontaneous.• Wrinkled clothes telegraph you don’t try. If you don't care, why should they?• Breathe deeply, take your power pose. Be sure to hydrate.• Keep your notes by your water. When you grab a drink, you can quickly glance at where you are. Notes can be there if you need them. Hopefully, you won't.I’m sure you’ll come up with your own list of tips from this very helpful book.

A friend told me about this book as I was in the midst of preparing for a TEDx talk. I picked it up with the same enthusiasm a 5th grader has for homework: "Guess we have to do this now, siiiigh." It turned out to be a compelling enough read to have me blaze through it in one sitting, way past my bedtime.As head of TED, not only has Chris Anderson seen a lot of extraordinary speakers, but also a lot of terrible ones. So he knows the ingredients of both great and mediocre speaking, and how to transform the latter into the former. He presents a highly structured framework useful for beginners all the way to seasoned professionals:• Foundation: presentation literacy; idea building; common traps to avoid; and the all-important throughline• Talk Tools: connection; narration; explanation; persuasion; revelation• Preparation: visuals; scripting; run-throughs; the open and the close• On Stage: wardrobe; mental prep; setup; voice and presence.Anderson does a particularly deft job of explaining the throughline concept and emphasizing its importance. So many talks and pitches miss this point, consequently making only a fraction of their potential impact. What holds together the disparate elements of the talk? Without a clear throughline, listeners may never take any of your lovely ideas home with them.The advice in this book ranges from the lofty and overarching -- e.g. a show of vulnerability brings the audience to your side -- to the technical and specific -- e.g. busy patterns on shirts come out looking funny on video. You may want to speak your talk and transcribe *that* instead of writing it out first. As a professional speaker and speaking coach, I really appreciate how Anderson has compiled many trade secrets that are understood unconsciously but haven't necessarily been articulated all in one spot. And the illustrative examples drawn from all-time greatest TED talks -- Sir Ken Robinson, Elizabeth Gilbert, Jill Bolte-Taylor -- are alone worth the price of admission.If you are a professional speaker or an aspiring one, this is a supremely useful reference. I applaud that one of the main themes of the book is to *serve your audience*. If you only do that, all your talks can only improve. Some books are easy to imagine exploding into narrative form from an Author's lifetime of work. Then there are the books that probably took years of cajoling from well intentioned friends before they finally come to fruition. This book seems like the latter. In a quiet signature style, TED founder Chris Anderson takes readers behind the scenes of some of the most well known moments from the iconic TED stage and what it took for those speakers to get there. Before TED Talks, the idea of a 17 minute non-fiction talk going "viral" with millions of views would have been unheard of. The point this book makes over and over again is that this is the real power of a great talk in the right moment. It can turn companies around and inspire people like nothing else. The premise of delivering an actual TED talk may seem like the most intimidating way to try and improve your speaking skills. The vaunted position TED talks take in our consciousness could make it seem like an unapproachable ideal. Yet reading this book, the one belief that comes through loud and clear is that being a powerful speaker is a skill that is within reach for anyone. Rather than sharing a secret formula for an ideal TED talk, Anderson offers tips and techniques that TED speakers use, but which could be applied for anyone. Aside from having delivered 2 TEDx talks myself, I also currently teach storytelling and speaking at Georgetown University. I will be recommending this book to my students - and I highly recommend it to anyone seeking an actionable and entertaining book on becoming a more persuasive speaker as well.
