This is a high-quality reprint of a classic published in 1920. Unlike some reprints (e.g. Dover Publications), this Applewood Books looks great and fresh. The pages don't have any sort of photocopied/scanned look.I actually got this for the first 54 pages of the book (about one-fifth of the volume), which covers early projection/animation devices such as the magic lantern, the thaumatrope, Faraday's wheel, the phenakistoscope, the zoetrope and the praxinoscope. The book is actually a great find because it contains a fair bit of technical information that isn't easy to find on the Internet. My ten-year-old son used the book to create a school project covering early cinema (and he got an "A"). (If you want to see Charles Emile Reynaud's praxinoscope patent from 1877, search the Internet for "GB187704244A" and "patent" and you should be able to dig out a PDF file.)The rest of the book gives a great overview of animation techniques, with a lot of drawings (cartoonish and otherwise). If you're looking to hand-craft animations, this is a great place to start. Eventually, you could put out something akin to "The Triplets of Belleville." I have the book in both its physical and digital forms and both are excellent.

This book is a very interesting one, but might be only for those who are interested in the history of the beginnings of animation techniques, particularly animated drawings. I have to be very specific about this because animation covers a wide scope of styles and techniques like stop motion and many others all the way to modern digital animation. It is not a book on how to learn the modern or latest techniques, styles and mechanics in animation. For that there are many other books by many good authors who are professionals in the field. It is the kind of reading that informs you first hand how the pioneers of animation figured it out. Imagine; Walt Disney himself, the pioneer of pioneers in animation, used this book as a reference! I guess I can use the following analogy: A modern jet fighter plane pilot reading a book about the techniques and maneuvers of “dog fight” by the Red Baron. I’m sure that a modern pilot would love to read something like that. And even so, especially if you’re an animation artist, you can still get something more out of this book besides the historical information, a more important thing: Inspiration! In addition to the text, I really enjoy the old type illustrations both the technical ones and the old classic cartoon style ones. This little book is a real gem for those who love the art and of animation and the history of this wonderful art form.

It's a very technical book written originally during a time when computers didn't exist & animation was done very different than how it is today. Walt Disney used this book to teach himself the art.

This book was first published in the 1920's, and it was the one that a young Walt Disney and his mob learned animation from. Read this book, and see if you think you could have done what Disney did, back then, using this information as a starting point.

Lutz's "Animated cartoons" is well written manual of making animation cartoons in 1920's. The description of techniques is simple and understandable, and you can learn what Disney and his rivals derived from this wonderful resource. It also provides a good review of the animation history in early years. This excellent book, however, has such a poor version from General Books LLC. The version seems to be the only OCR data, including many errors without any layout, and almost impossible to read. If you don't want to waste your money, choose the hard cover version, or try to find a copy-free version online.

'Would have been excellent during its time. 'Better now bc of hyperlinks to research zoetropes, etc. online.

Time-travel in the art world!

Do you feel a fondness in your heart for old black and white cartoons? Do you know that the original Tom and Jerry were not a cat and a mouse but two loopy guys? If you can answer yes to those questions you will like this book which was originally published way back then. It's actually full of good information that is still relevant today. I own a number of animation how-to-do-it books and one thing about this book is that all its numerous illustrations are unique and different from any other book. And it covers a few things that I've never seen covered in any other book - like exactly how to draw all the frames for the smoke coming from the tailpipe of an old jalopy. The emphasis of this book is different from modern books and the tone is more bright-eyed and awestruck. It's refreshing to read something written at the very beginning of animation when it was still viewed with amazement. If watching Betty Boop fills you with warm nostalgia then I think this book will do the same for you.
